It is tough to count out a Mike Gundy team. Especially since he has gone 41-11 over the past four seasons. But this looks like a rebuilding season in Stillwater. The Cowboys have just four returning starters on both sides of the ball and they have lost a ton of NFL talent over the past two years.

Paul Rhoads is one of the most underappreciated coaches in the country. He’s kept Iowa State competitive during his five years at the helm despite being completely outmanned in one of the best, deepest conferences in college football. Rhoades has carried the Cyclones to three bowl games in five years but will be hard-pressed to accomplish that again this year.

Oh Kansas, you try so hard. Charlie Weis finally realized – only about eight years too late – that the spread offense is The Thing in college football. He has started to adapt, but this proven loser is just 4-20 in his two years at the helm and his team hasn’t shown many signs of progress.

Bill Snyder remains one of the best coaches in the country and has been masterful in his second stint with the Wildcats. Kansas State has gone 29-10 the last three years and they are always a player in the Big 12 despite holding firm as a bit of a throwback, physical, run-first attack.

Much like Utah out in the Pac-12, TCU has found the sledding outside of the Mountain West much tougher since stepping up in conference competition. They’ve gone just 11-14 combined the past two years and have been a non-factor in the Big 12 since joining prior to the 2012 season. Things are looking up for the Horned Frogs but I still question how good this program can really be.

Second-year coach Kliff Kingsbury has completely rejuvenated the Texas Tech program, bringing back the high-scoring, freewheeling point machine that the Red Raiders were used to in the Mike Leach Era. Tech won eight games last season and pulled a huge upset, winning outright as a 14-point underdog, in the Holiday Bowl. We’ll see if the Red Raiders can build on that momentum this year.

It’s been a rough ride down for West Virginia, who is a long way removed from the Rich Rodriguez heyday. Dana Holgersen has see his win total decline every year he’s been in Morgantown and this season might be his last shot to win over the natives. WVU has 13 starters back this year after entering last season with just eight.

The Charlie Strong Era begins with the former Louisville head coach taking the reigns of one of the premier programs in the country. Deposed Mack Brown left a full cupboard, with 15 returning starters and 13 senior starters, and Strong has an excellent chance to do some damage in his rookie campaign.

The Bears laid waste to opponents in 2013 with one of the best offenses of the decade, averaging a ridiculous 52.8 points per game and scoring 69 or more points in five of their first six outings. The Bears won the outright Big 12 championship and solidified their metamorphosis from Big 12 doormat to Big 12 dominator.

Perpetually overrated Miami finally seemed to turn the corner in 2013, working its way into the Top 10 with a 7-0 start. Some key injuries precipitated a weak 2-4 close to the year. And heading into 2014 it remains to be seen whether last year was a blip on the radar or a sign of things to come in South Beach.

New head coach Dave Doeren bottomed out with the Wolfpack last year, dumping eight straight games after an encouraging 3-1 start and posting the first winless league slate in over 50 years. They were outscored by an average of a touchdown per game and finished in the bottom half of college football on both sides of the ball.

The Tar Heels program has suffered through a host of on- and off-field problems over the last several seasons. But coach Larry Fedora overcame a slow start to the 2013 to win six of UNC’s final seven games and bring some positive mojo back to Chapel Hill. We will see if the Heels can carry that over into this fall.

This proud Pittsburgh program has been able to keep its head slightly above water over the last few seasons based almost solely on grit and determination. But the Panthers simply are not very talented and expectations have to be pretty low for Paul Chryst’s third season.

Once a premier football program in the Northeast, Syracuse has been fighting and clawing its way back to relevance over the past decade. They’re not there yet. But after three of four winning seasons the Orange have at least gotten themselves back to respectability. The 2014 season is all about the Orange avoiding a back slide.

Mike London’s seat is extremely warm after a dreadful 2-10 season that saw the Cavaliers lose their last nine games in 2013. London is just 18-31 in his four years at the helm and may need to pull a bowl bid out of his hat this season.

Three years ago I predicted that Virginia Tech’s run as a national power was coming to an end. Their extraordinarily easy schedules and the statistical anomalies I found in their statistics from year to year suggested that the Hokies program had been overachieving for several seasons. Sure enough, Tech has struggled in back-to-back years and they are now a second-tier team in a third-tier college football conference.

Few head coaches in the country did more with less than Jim Grobe over the past decade. But Grobe has bowed out and new head coach Dave Clawson is looking to parlay his success at Bowling Green into some ACC W’s. I wouldn’t expect it to happen this year.

The Tigers are turning the page after the departure o dynamic duo of Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins. That pair helped the Tigers to a 32-8 mark over the past three seasons and now Dabo Sweeney will try to keep this program among the elite in the nation. It won’t be easy, especially with a brutal schedule, and this could be a tough transition season for the Tigers.

It was a dream season for Florida State in 2013, culminating in a thrilling national championship win over Auburn and the school’s first title since 1999. With Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston back under center the Seminoles are one of the favorites to repeat as champions in 2014.

Bobby Petrino is one of the bigger scumbags in college athletics. But man, that guy can coach. So because he has proven that he can win ball games the Cardinals have welcomed their prodigal son back to Papa John’s Stadium.
