The Best And Worst NFL Quarterback Rooms In 2023
With NFL training camps set to open in about a month, now is the perfect time to start analyzing teams and positions so we can begin to construct our power rankings for the upcoming season. Let Doc's insightful analysis be the starting point in your NFL research. Here, we will grade every NFL team’s quarterback situation. Quarterback is the most important position in professional football, and getting a good grasp on what each team brings to the table is crucial for NFL betting success this season.
Note: All 2023 player stats are from the regular season only, while the team stats may include playoff games.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
Arizona Cardinals: 4-13 SU, 8-9 ATS, 8-7-2 O/U
Starter: Kyler Murray- 259-390 (66.4%) 2,368 yards passing, 14 TDs, 7 INTs, 418 yards, 3 TDs rushing, 11 starts: 3-8 SU, QB rating 87.2
Backups: Colt McCoy (13 yrs), Jeff Driskel (5 yrs), David Blough (4 yrs), Clayton Tune (R-Houston)
Analysis and Grade: Two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray is one of the league's exciting young QBs. However, that excitement doesn't translate to ATS success, as evidenced by his 3-8 ATS record. After playing the entire season in the first two years in the NFL, Murray has missed games in each of the last two seasons, the previous year being six. This a disturbing trend for a potential star of the league.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Atlanta Falcons: 7-10 SU, 9-8 ATS, 7-10 O/U
Starter: Desmond Ridder- 73-115 (63.5%) 708 yards passing, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 4 starts: 2-2 SU, QB rating 86.4
Backups: Taylor Heinicke (6 yrs), Logan Woodside (5 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: The Marcus Mariota experiment lasted only 13 games in Atlanta before he gave way to the Falcons' 3rd-round draft pick, Desmond Ridder. Ridder also showed promise for bettors, going 2-2 and beating Tom Brady in his final (maybe) regular season game. There could be value, particularly in the early part of the season, before the public learns that this kid is pretty good.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Baltimore Ravens: 10-8 SU, 8-9-1 ATS, 6-12 O/U
Starter: Lamar Jackson- 203-326 (62.3%) 2,242 yards, 17 TDs, 7 INTs, 764 yards 3 TDs rushing, 12 starts: 8-4 SU, QB rating 91.1
Backups: Tyler Huntley (3 yrs), Anthony Brown (1 yrs), Josh Johnson (15 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: After all the offseason drama, Jackson is back where he started: the Ravens' starting QB. Perhaps the most physically gifted QB in the NFL, he was also having a fantastic year for bettors backing him, with an 8-4 ATS record before he was injured. Interestingly enough, with his high athleticism, the under was 4-8 in his starts. The acquisition of Odell Beckham, Jr. could be an angle worth exploring, as the public might over-value their abilities in scoring.
OVERALL GRADE: B
Buffalo Bills: 10-8 SU, 8-9-1 ATS, 7-11 O/U
Starter: Josh Allen- 359-567 (63.3%) 4,283 yards, 35 passing TDs, 14 INTs, 124 carries-762 yards rushing, 7 TDs, 16 starts: 13-3 SU, QB Rating: 96.6
Backups: Kyle Allen (5 yrs), Matt Barkley (10 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: Buffalo has, without a doubt, the best starting QB in the division. Pro Football Focus ranked Josh Allen as the second-best QB in the league, and he was 7th overall in yards passing. The Bills' issues come to their depth or lack thereof. Kyle Allen's last meaningful playing time came in Carolina, and Matt Barkley hasn't been on an active roster since 2020. Allen has been very durable, starting every game since 2019. But he has taken many extra hits due to his running nature and suffered an elbow injury that plagued him in the back half of the 2022 campaign.
OVERALL GRADE: A
Carolina Panthers: 7-10 SU, 9-8 ATS, 8-9 O/U
Starter: Bryce Young- Rookie out of Alabama
Backups: Andy Dalton (12 yrs), Matt Corral (R-Ole Miss)
Analysis and Grade: The overall #1 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, Bryce Young, has been named the starter after the Panther's OTAs a few weeks ago. He couldn't have a better mentor than 12-year veteran "Red Rifle" Andy Dalton, who quietly was very effective last season. If Young should falter or be overwhelmed, Carolina will be in competent hands. Bettors hope he can duplicate Joe Flacco's ATS performance in his rookie year with Baltimore (2008) when the Ravens went 14-5 ATS and made it to the AFC Championship, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Chicago Bears: 3-14 SU, 5-11-1 ATS, 10-7 O/U
Starter: Justin Fields- 192-318 (60.4%) 2,242 yards passing, 17 TDs, 11 INTs, 160 carries- 1143 yards, 8 TDs rushing 15 starts: 3-12 SU, QB rating 85.2
Backups: Nathan Peterman (6 yrs), P.J. Walker (5 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: Fields is continuing to mature as a quarterback. In his rookie year, he was primarily a threat on the ground. Last year saw him post very commendable passing numbers while continuing to be a menace as a rusher. The Bears organization has high hopes for Fields in year three. Bettors also have high hopes; after seeing his starts go under the total 7 out of 10 times his rookie year, 2022 saw his starts go 9-6 over the total.
OVERALL GRADE: B
Cincinnati Bengals: 14-5 SU, 13-6 ATS, 7-11-1 O/U
Starter: Joe Burrow- 414-606 (68.3%) 4,475 yards passing, 35 TDs, 12 INTs, 257 yards, and 5 TDs rushing, 16 starts: 12-4 SU, QB rating 100.8
Backups: Trevor Siemian (8 yrs), Jake Browning (R-Washington)
Analysis and Grade: Burrow is one of the best pure quarterbacks in the league today. He had a 7-game ATS win streak towards the end of the season. He has an experienced backup in Trevor Siemian and a guy who graduated in 2019 but has not been on an active roster since in Jake Browning. Regardless, this is one of the best QB groups in the NFL.
OVERALL GRADE: A
Cleveland Browns: 7-10 SU, 8-9 ATS, 8-8-1 O/U
Starter: Deshaun Watson- 99-170 (58.2%) 1,102 yards, 7 TDs, 5 INTs, 36 carries 175 yards, 1 rushing TD, 6 starts: 3-3 SU, QB rating 79.1
Backups: Kellen Mond (2 yrs), Dorian Thompson-Robinson (R-UCLA)
Analysis and Grade: After wagering their immediate future with the trade of three consecutive first-round picks and three other picks for QB Deshaun Watson, they were forced to wait for 11 games to see their franchise centerpiece in action. His 3-3 SU and ATS records weren't spectacular, but expectations are sky-high for him this year. The under in his six started games was 5-1, including going under totals of 38, 32, and 40.5. Unproven talent resides in the backup's position, so it's Watson's show.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Dallas Cowboys: 13-6 SU, 11-8 ATS, 9-10 O/U
Starter: Dak Prescott- 261-394 (66.2%) 2,860 yards, 23 TDs, 15 INTs, 45 carries 182 yards, 1 rushing TD, 12 starts: 8-4 SU, QB rating 91.1
Backups: Cooper Rush (6 yrs), Will Grier (4 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: Many of Dak's analytic numbers were down. Most of that can be attributed to his missing five games due to an injury, but some of that is related to Dallas not solely relying on him to drive the offense. Evidence shows this might be more effective for the Cowboys and bettors, as Dallas had the 6th-best ATS record in the NFL, and the Cowboys actually won a playoff game. His career-high 15 interceptions in 12 games is slightly concerning.
OVERALL GRADE: A-
Denver Broncos: 5-12 SU, 7-10 ATS, 6-11 O/U
Starter: Russell Wilson- 292-483 (60.5%) 3,524 yards, 16 TDs, 11 INTs, 55 carries 277 yards 3 TDs rushing, 15 starts: 4-11 SU, QB rating- 84.4
Backups: Jarrett Stidham (4 yrs), Ben DiNucci (3 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: The Broncos tried to replicate what they did with Peyton Manning at the end of his career when they arranged a trade with the Seattle Seahawks for Russell Wilson. Unfortunately for Wilson, he's not throwing to the likes of Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, or Wes Welker. The Broncos hope a new coaching staff will help re-ignite Wilson's career. The verdict is out on that.
OVERALL GRADE: C
Detroit Lions: 9-8 SU, 12-5 ATS, 10-7 O/U
Starter: Jared Goff- 382-587 (65.1%) 4,438 yards, 29 TDs, 7 INTs, 17 starts: 9-8 SU, QB rating 99.3
Backups: Nate Sudfeld (6 yrs), Hendon Hooker (R-Tennessee)
Analysis and Grade: After a dismal first season, Goff led a miraculous turnaround and almost led the Lions to their first playoff appearance since 2016. However, Detroit was solid gold for bettors with a 70.6% ATS cover rate, second-best in the NFL. However, I expect a dropoff this year due to losing their two leading rushers. Goff's arsenal had many subtractions but few additions.
OVERALL GRADE: B+
Green Bay Packers: 8-9 SU, 8-9 ATS, 8-9 O/U
Starter: Jordan Love- 14-21 (66.7%) 195 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, 0 starts, QB rating 112.2
Backups: Sean Clifford (R-Penn State), Danny Etling (5 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: Like Yogi Berra said, "It's like Deja Vu all over again." In 2008, QB drama surrounded the Packers, and HOF Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets. 15 years later, QB drama again engulfed the Packers, and future HOF'er Aaron Rodgers was traded to the Jets. The Packers front office is confident in Jordan Love's abilities. I'm a little less so.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Houston Texans: 3-13-1, 8-8-1 ATS, 7-10 O/U
Starter: C.J. Stroud- Rookie out of Ohio State University
Backups: Davis Mills (2 yrs), Case Keenum (11 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: After Carolina took Bryce Young as the #1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Texans wisely selected C.J. Stroud at number two. Unfortunately for Stroud, he's being penciled in as the day-one starter on a team that could be better. Luckily, it shouldn't be as bad as when the Texans started their franchise with David Carr, and he was pummeled into a horrible career. I think Stroud will be good, just not next year.
OVERALL GRADE: C-
Indianapolis Colts: 4-12-1, SU 6-11 ATS, 7-10 O/U
Starter: Anthony Richardson- Rookie out of Florida
Backups: Gardner Minshew II (4 yrs), Sam Ehlinger (2 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: One of the most discussed players in the draft, the Colts are turning over the keys to their franchise to a QB that had a career college completion percentage of 54.7 %. At least their backups have starting experience, because they will need it.
OVERALL GRADE: D-
Jacksonville Jaguars: 10-9 SU, 10-9 ATS, 9-10 O/U
Starter: Trevor Lawrence- 387-584 (66.3%) 4,113 yards, 25 TDs, 8 INTs, 62 rushes 291 yards, 5 rushing TDs, 17 starts: 9-8 SU QB rating 95.2
Backups: C.J. Beathard (6 yrs), Nathan Rourke (R-Ohio)
Analysis and Grade: The Jaguars have their franchise QB after 19 years of trial and mostly error. While the Jags went only 9-8 during the regular season, that was enough to win a historically bad conference and make the playoffs, where they won a thriller against the L.A. Chargers and lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs by just a TD. Jacksonville closed out strong ATS, going 6-1 in their last seven.
OVERALL GRADE: A
Kansas City Chiefs: 17-3 SU, 8-11-1 ATS, 9-11 O/U
Starter: Patrick Mahomes- 435-648 (67.1%) 5,250 yards, 41 TDs, 12 INTs, 61 carries, 358 yards and 4 TDs rushing, 17 starts: 14-3 SU, QB rating 105.2
Backups: Blaine Gabbert (12 yrs), Chris Oladokun (R-S. Florida)
Analysis and Grade: Now that Tom Brady is finally (maybe) gone for good, Mahomes becomes the face of the NFL, and for good reason. He's made the Pro Bowl every year as a starter and just won his second Super Bowl. However, because of their popularity, the Chiefs saw some inflated lines and, as such, only had a 42.1% ATS cover rate. This will likely be the case if Mahomes stays healthy and the Chiefs continue winning.
OVERALL GRADE: A+
LA Chargers: 10-8 SU, 11-6-1 ATS, 7-10-1 O/U
Starter: Justin Herbert- 477-699 (68.2%) 4,739 yards, 25 TDs, 10 INTs, 17 starts: 10-7 SU, QB rating 93.2
Backups: Easton Stick (3 yrs), Max Duggan (R-TCU)
Analysis and Grade: It has been a steady progression for the 3-year starter, Herbert. While his passing yards were down a bit, his completion pct. and interceptions improved, and as such, the team made the playoffs for the first time since 2018. Their SU records have improved every season Herbert has started, and the ATS record went from 8-9 in 2021 to 11-6-1 last year. Things are trending up for the Chargers.
OVERALL GRADE: A
LA Rams: 5-12 SU, 6-9-2 ATS, 6-11 O/U
Starter: Matthew Stafford- 206-303 (68%) 2,087 yards, 10 TDs, 8 INTs, 9 starts: 3-6 SU, QB rating 87.4
Backups: Brett Rypien (3 yrs), Dresser Winn (R-UT Martin)
Analysis and Grade: The Rams went from winning the Super Bowl in 2021 to winning five games the following season. This team goes as Matthew Stafford goes, and, unfortunately, he suffered through an injury-plagued campaign. Bettors suffered with him as Stafford was 2-7 ATS before he missed the final eight games.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Las Vegas Raiders: 6-11 SU, 8-9 ATS, 8-8-1 O/U
Starter: Jimmy Garoppolo (with 49'ers) 207-308 (67.2%) 2,437 yards, 16 TDs, 4 INTs, 10 starts: 7-3 SU, 103.0 QB rating
Backups: Brian Hoyer (14 yrs), Aidan O'Connell (R-Purdue)
Analysis and Grade: The Raiders and Derek Carr parted ways after nine seasons. Las Vegas brought in Jimmy Garoppolo, who had a fantastic season before his season-ending injury in week 13. Carr is the Raiders' all-time leading passer, but Jimmy G is more than a competent replacement. He was 6-4 ATS last season and looks to get the Raiders back into the playoffs.
OVERALL GRADE: B
Miami Dolphins: 9-9 SU, 10-8 ATS, 9-9 O/U
Starter: Tua Tagovailoa- 259-400 (64.8%) 3,548 yards, 25 passing TDs, 8 INTs, 13 starts: 8-5 SU, QB rating 105.5
Backups: Mike White (5 yrs), Skylar Thompson (1 yr)
Analysis and Grade: This situation is even direr than the first two, as Miami's athletically-gifted QB has had injury problems his entire career, most recently concussion issues. It's not a question of IF Tua misses some time, but when. And when that happens, the alternatives are nothing to get excited about. Unfortunately, Mike White has also been troubled with injury issues. As talented as Tua is, there needs to be more certainty over durability to be confident in the QB room in Miami.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Minnesota Vikings: 13-5 SU, 7-10-1 ATS, 9-9 O/U
Starter: Kirk Cousins- 424-643 (65.9%) 4,547 yards, 29 TDs, 14 INTs, 17 starts: 13-4 SU, QB rating 92.5
Backups: Nick Mullens (5 yrs), Jaren Hall (R-BYU)
Analysis and Grade: The Vikings surprised everybody but the sportsbooks last season. Going from an 8-9 record to 13-4, you would have expected a few upset wins. Minnesota was a dog five times last year and went 1-4 SU and ATS. This further solidifies that Kirk Cousins has difficulty winning in adverse situations.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
New England Patriots: 8-9 SU, 7-9-1 ATS, 8-9 O/U
Starter: Mac Jones- 288-442 (65.2%) 2,997 yards, 14 TDs, 11 INTs, 14 starts: 6-8 SU, QB rating 84.8
Backups: Bailey Zappe (1 yr), Trace McSorley (4 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: The second former Alabama QB to start in the AFC East (Tagovailoa was Jones's predecessor in Tuscaloosa), Jones might be in the best situation because of the homecoming of Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach Bill O'Brien. Patriot backers might have wished Jones missed more, as the Pats covered all three games Mac missed last season.
OVERALL GRADE: B
New Orleans Saints: 7-10 SU, 7-10 ATS, 6-11 O/U
Starter: Derek Carr (with Raiders) 305-502 (60.8) 3,522 yards, 24 TDs, 14 INTs, 15 starts: 7-9 SU, QB rating 86.3
Backups: Jameis Winston (8 yrs), Jake Haener (R-Washington)
Analysis and Grade: Carr gets an upgrade in team colors, going from silver and black to gold and black. He also gets to leave the drama surrounding the Raiders, seemingly every year and moves to the "quiet" town of New Orleans. He's in a much weaker division than the AFC West and should rebound from a sub-par year, both statistically and from a gambling perspective, as he was only 7-9 ATS last season.
OVERALL GRADE A-
New York Giants: 10-8-1 SU, 14-5 ATS, 8-10-1 O/U
Starter: Daniel Jones- 317-472 (67.2%) 3,205 yards, 15 TDs, 5 INTs, 120 carries-708 yards and 7 TDs, 16 starts: 9-6-1 SU, QB rating 92.5
Backups: Tyrod Taylor (12 yrs), Tommy DeVito (R-Illinois)
Analysis and Grade: The G-Men printed money last season, with the NFL's best ATS regular season record of 13-4. Daniel Jones was a major reason why, as he had career-best numbers in yards, completion percentage, and INTs. Mr. Do-Everything was also second on the team in rushing and rushing TDs. Expect a significant dropoff as they were 10-2-1 as dogs last season but only 3-2 as favorites. After last season, they're not sneaking up on people.
OVERALL GRADE: A
New York Jets: 7-10 SU, 8-9 ATS, 5-12 O/U
Starter: Aaron Rodgers (with Green Bay): 350-542 (64.6%), 3,695 yards, 26 Passing TDs, 12 INTs, 8-9 record as a starter, QB rating 91.1
Backups: Zach Wilson (2 yrs), Chris Streveler (3 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: The New York Jets are becoming "Green Bay East" as this marks the second consecutive Green Bay, future Hall of Fame QB to sign with the men in green. Rodgers comes to the Jets with a little more left in the tank than Favre did 15 years ago. He's being reunited with some of his ex-Packer WRs in, Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, not to mention 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson. The Jets' issue at QB, though, is precisely the same as Buffalo, unreliable depth. CBS Sports called Wilson "the worst QB in football when pressured."
OVERALL GRADE: B
Philadelphia Eagles: 16-4 SU, 10-10 ATS, 11-9 O/U
Starter: Jalen Hurts- 306-460 (66.5%) 3,701 yards, 22 TDs, 6 INTs, 155 carries-760 yards, 13 rushing TDs, 15 starts: 14-1 SU, QB rating 101.5
Backups: Marcus Mariota (8 yrs), Ian Book (2 yrs), Tanner McKee (R-Stanford)
Analysis and Grade: It looks as though the Eagles' gamble on Jalen Hurts paid off. In his 2nd season as a full-time starter, he improved in every statistical category in leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Oddsmakers started inflating the Eagles' spreads, and they struggled, only covering once out of four games over 10 points. Something to keep an eye on if they become a popular team again.
OVERALL GRADE: A+
Pittsburgh Steelers: 9-8 SU, 10-6-1 ATS, 7-10 O/U
Starter: Kenny Pickett- 245-389 (63.0%) 2,404 yards, 7 TDs, 9 INTs, 55 carries- 237 yards rushing, 3 TDs, 12 starts: 7-5 SU, QB rating 76.7
Backups: Mitch Trubisky (6 yrs), Mason Rudolph (5), Tanner Morgan (R-Minnesota)
Analysis and Grade: First-year starter Pickett showed signs of promise and areas that needed improvement. Coming in for an ineffective Mitch Trubisky in the Steelers' 4th game against the Jets, Pickett led a comeback that the Steelers eventually lost. The under is something to key on the Steelers, as the highest O/U that went over in their games was 43 in a 35-13 loss to Philadelphia.
OVERALL GRADE: C+
San Francisco 49ers: 15-5 SU, 13-7 ATS, 10-10 O/U
Starter: Brock Purdy- 114-170 (67.1%) 1,374 yards, 13 TDs, 4 INTs, 5 starts: 5-0 SU, QB rating 107.3
Backups: Trey Lance (2 yrs), Sam Darnold (5 yrs), Bandon Allen (5 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: The Niners' misfortune with QBs last season could be a blessing in disguise, as Jimmy Garoppolo was hurt multiple times, backup Trey Lance went down in his third start, and rookie Brock Purdy led a comeback win against the Dolphins, won first seven starts, including two playoff victories, before succumbing to injuries himself in the NFC Championship Game against Philadelphia. In the seven victories he led, the Niners covered six of them, and they were favored in every game Purdy started except the NFC Championship.
OVERALL GRADE: B+
Seattle Seahawks: 9-9 SU, 7-11 ATS, 9-9 O/U
Starter: Geno Smith- 399-572 (69.8%) 4,282 yards, 30 TDs, 11 INTs, 68 rushes 366 yards, 1 TD, 17 starts: 9-8 SU, QB rating 100.9
Backups: Drew Lock (4 yrs), Holton Ahlers (R-E. Carolina)
Analysis and Grade: The Seahawks boldly traded franchise QB Russell Wilson because of Geno Smith. Getting five picks, including two first and second-round picks, plus TE Noah Fant, the Seahawks look like mad geniuses.
OVERALL GRADE: B
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 8-10 SU, 4-13-1 ATS, 6-12 O/U
Starter: Baker Mayfield (with Carolina and LA Rams): 201-335 (60.0%) 2,163 yards, 10 TDs, 8 INTs, 10 starts: 2-8 SU, QB rating 79.0
Backups: Kyle Trask (1 yr), John Wolford (3 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: After four years in Cleveland, Mayfield is now with his third team in two years. He should be an upgrade over last year's version of the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady. Being there for an entire off-season will help as well.
OVERALL GRADE: B-
Tennessee Titans: 7-10 SU, 9-7-1 ATS, 5-12 O/U
Starter: Ryan Tannehill- 212-325 (65.2%) 2,536 yards, 13 TDs, 6 INTs, 12 starts: 6-6 SU, QB rating 94.6
Backups: Will Levis (R-Kentucky), Malik Willis (1 yr)
Analysis and Grade: Tannehill had a decent season until he went down with an ankle injury in week 15 against the Chargers. The Titans were clearly not the same team without him, going just 1-4 in his absence. Tennessee tied the Jets for the most unders with 12, and this is a trend to monitor in the upcoming season.
OVERALL GRADE: C+
Washington Commanders: 8-8-1 SU, 8-8-1, ATS 5-11-1
Starter: Sam Howell- 11-19 169 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 5 carries 35 yards and 1 TD, One start: 1-0, QB rating 83.0
Backups: Jake Fromm (2 yrs), Jacoby Brissett (7 yrs)
Analysis and Grade: While Kirk Cousins may not be able to win the big game, he stabilized Washington's QB room. The past five seasons since his departure have seen three different Washington QBs lead the team in passing. Sam Howell is next up in the QB meat grinder in our nation's capital, in his second year out of North Carolina. Regardless of who is behind center, the under is the way to go, with a 68.8% record under the total, good enough for the 3rd-highest under percentage in the league.
