In excerpts from the forthcoming "Game of Shadows," the book's co-writers detail Barry Bonds alleged doping regime that they claim began in 1998 and employed a variety of performance-enhancing drugs including steroids and human growth hormones. Despite his continued denial and lack of a positive drug test to date, Bonds must now deal with the most damning allegations of steroid use as he enters his 21st Major League season. The first sportsbook to offer betting on Barry Bonds receiving a drug-related suspension in 2006, Pinnacle Sportsbook slashed the odds on the San Francisco slugger being disciplined by the league following yesterday's revelations.
The largest sports betting site on the Internet, Pinnacle Sportsbook initially opened wagering with Bonds listed as an enormous 14/1 underdog to receive a drug-related suspension from Major League Baseball in 2006. Following release of excerpts from the book, the odds that the league will suspend Bonds this season dropped to 5/2. Despite this, the chances that the single-season home run king will avoid being disciplined by Bud Selig's office in the upcoming season remain a favorite at 2/9 odds.
"Allegations of steroid use have surrounded Barry Bonds since he began his assault on the record books, but this book could prove to be the slugger's kryptonite," said Simon Noble of Pinnacle Sportsbook. "With several eye-witness accounts, hundreds of interviews and thousands of documents allegedly detailing his doping history, the league office will likely investigate these claims further, which could easily result in disciplinary action being levied against Bonds."
