While boxing fans have been spoiled the past few months with endless TV fights, there was nothing worth watching this last week(unless you still think Thomas Hearns is credible). The main reason for the delay was the cancellation of the Christy Martin vs. Lucia Rijker fight, but either way it gives us a chance to focus on all the upcoming fights.
Diego Corrales in a rematch against Jose Luis Castillo is easily the most appealing, but I am also excited for the return of Roy Jones Jr. He has agreed to fight Antonio Tarver for the third time on Oct. 1. Roy has taken dirtnaps in his last two fights so this is truly a chance for him to prove all the doubters wrong that he is a frontrunner, not able to suck it up and win with his heart. An interesting sidenote is that Roy may bring in his father to work in his corner.
This weekend Showtime once again has a great matchup on Saturday featuring young champion Jeff Lacy in the toughest fight of his career. Lacy is facing Robin Reid, a tough British fighter who has lost controversial decisions to Joe Calzaghe and Sven Ottke. Lacy is looking to fight Calzaghe at the end of the year but Robin Reid offers a lot of experience and a frustrating style that Lacy must be ready for. Doc's was able to analyze this fight and come up with a great value on this fight. Doc's has been on a four-fight winning streak and has found underdog value on two of them.
The following weekend I will be traveling to Chicago for the Aug. 13 Don King card. The main event is an eliminator between Monte Barrrett and Hasim Rahman. Ricardo Mayorga will make his return against Michelle Piccirilo. Alex Garcia fights Luca Messi for the meaningless Interim WBC middleweight title. Luis Collazo and the unpredictable Andrew Golota will also appear.
