Case of the Mondays: Bubbles Burst for Kentucky, Tennessee
by Ricky Dimon - 3/18/2013
Joe Lunardi (and a whole bunch of other people) nailed all 68 teams in the field, which really isn’t hard to do when the last two or three spots come down to three or four realistic hopefuls. So nobody could have been too surprised to learn its fate on Sunday evening. Still, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of folks having a blue Monday.
Thank God It’s Friday: Beware the Ides of March
by Ricky Dimon - 3/15/2013
March means many things; one is that the agony of defeat is heightened to unprecedented levels throughout the month. Sure, the joy of victory can reach a similar zenith, but the agony is something that might never go away. Just ask the Richmond Spiders, who will no doubt never forget what transpired on Thursday in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Or — to a lesser extent — ask Kobe Bryant, who vowed never to forget what happened in the recent Lakers-Hawks tilt…not even if it takes him a whole year to get revenge.
Back to the Futures: March Madness Kicks Off With Conference Tournaments
by Ricky Dimon - 3/12/2013
Tickets have already been punched to the NCAA Tournament, and now it’s time for the big boys (with no disrespect to top-ranked Gonzaga) to take center stage. But don’t forget about the NBA and the PGA Tour, with the former embarking on the stretch run to the playoffs and the latter building up to its biggest event of the season next month.

Thank God It’s Friday: No. 1s Continue to Lose in College Sports
by Ricky Dimon - 3/1/2013
Whatever Notre Dame had in the BCS National Championship, it appears to be contagious. The top-ranked Irish, of course, got blown out by Alabama, and the trend has not stopped at the college level in 2013. Previously thought to be “Touchdown Jesus” in life form, Manti Te’o continued to go south in a hurry with a dreadful performance at the NFL Combine. On the hardwood, No. 1 teams have been losing left and right. When Indiana fell this week, it was the seventh time in this college basketball season that the top-ranked team has taken a tumble.

Back to the Futures: Blackhawks Up, Both in Standings and Odds
by Ricky Dimon - 2/26/2013
Nineteen down. Twenty-nine to go. Suddenly, an undefeated regular season in the NHL does not look so impossible since this year’s slate features just 48 games instead of the normal 82. Okay, it’s not really going to happen — but who is going to beat the Blackhawks, and when?
Thank God It’s Friday: Tiger, Rory Tumble Out of Match Play
by Ricky Dimon - 2/22/2013
It was not a good week — and a very short one — for Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. Their upset losses on Thursday mean they have almost an entire week break before suiting back up for the Honda Classic in Florida.

Back to the Futures: Great Hype for Great American Race
by Ricky Dimon - 2/19/2013
By her own admission, Danica Patrick (+1500) is a longshot to win Sunday’s Daytona 500. But she has already done a world of good for the Great American Race. Patrick snagged the pole position last weekend, and the sports world is buzzing about NASCAR as a result (relatively speaking, of course).
Thank God It’s Friday: Injuries the Story for Storied Franchises
by Ricky Dimon - 2/15/2013
The Boston Celtics just cannot catch a break this season. Their roster, however, is breaking down at an alarming rate. First it was Rajon Rondo. Then it was Jared Sullinger. Then, for the third time in three weeks, they lost another player for the season when veteran Leandro Barbosa joined Rondo in the ranks of the torn ACL on Monday.

Back to the Futures: Final Fore! Losses Coming in Bunches for Top Teams
by Ricky Dimon - 2/12/2013
Whatever Kansas had appears to be contagious. No other legitimate title contender has dropped three in a row like the Jayhawks (whose streak of futility is finally over), but all — except Miami (FL) — are stockpiling digits in the loss column. Indiana lost to Illinois after a Herculean late-game collapse and it still held onto the top spot this week thanks to everyone behind it.
Thank God It’s Friday: Oh Football, Football, Wherefore Art Thou, Football?
by Ricky Dimon - 2/8/2013
We’re all undefeated now…. Yes, even the Kansas City Chiefs. Still, we’re mired in the dog days of sports right now — what with the end of football season, a month to go until March Madness, two months to go until the Masters, almost two months to go until baseball, and the middle of an interminable NBA regular season.

Back to the Futures: Patriots, 49ers Favored for Next Super Bowl
by Ricky Dimon - 2/5/2013
Nobody expected the Baltimore Ravens to win the Super Bowl. Not at the beginning of the season, not when Ray Lewis suffered a torn triceps in Week 6, not when they lost by 30 to Houston in Week 7, not when they faced fourth-and-29 against San Diego, not when they dropped four of their last five heading into the playoffs, not when they trailed Denver by seven with 40 seconds remaining and no timeouts, and not when they had to pay a visit to New England for the AFC Championship. Even going into the Super Bowl they were still discounted as +3.5 underdogs.
