Back to the Futures: Heat Three-Peat?
by Ricky Dimon - 6/21/2013
A ton of huge sporting events are at the forefront of people’s minds right now, either on the immediate horizon or already eagerly-anticipated even though they will not grace our presence until next summer. With the Heat having gone back-to-back, talk of a potential three-peat is inevitably underway. On the pitch, the Confederations Cup is whetting appetites for the 2014 World Cup.

A. Ray Allen. “Jesus Shuttlesworth” brought Miami back from the dead in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night. Long after a boatload of Heat “fans” headed for the exits, Jesus nailed a game-tying three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation before making the — gasp! — defensive play of the game with one second remaining in overtime. In related news, Big State University announced on Wednesday that applications for enrollment are at an all-time high.

by Doc's Sports - 6/18/2013
Doc’s Sports: Most bettors have to be somewhat shocked with San Antonio’s 3-2 edge over Miami in this season’s NBA Finals heading into Tuesday night’s Game 6 considering that the Spurs were heavy underdogs when this series first began. Your original prediction was the Heat in six or seven games. Do you still see them winning the final two games at home to claim their second-straight NBA title?
Case of the Mondays: Miami, Chicago Fail to Take Control
by Ricky Dimon - 6/17/2013
The Heat and Blackhawks had opportunities to put a stranglehold on their respective championship bids over the weekend. Miami pulled within one point of San Antonio midway through the third quarter during Game 5 of the NBA Finals, but a disastrous end to the third and start to the fourth ended its hopes of going back to South Beach with a 3-2 advantage. Chicago at least came close to moving ahead of Boston 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals, but it watched the Bruins skate their way into a tie.
Back to the Futures: LeBron Still Favored for Finals MVP
by Ricky Dimon - 6/13/2013
The general population seems to be anticipating a bounce-back performance from the Miami Heat in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night. After all, the Heat were +2 underdogs in Game 3 on Tuesday, they lost by 36 points, and now they are giving points (the spread is -1) two days later. The thinking has to be that 1) LeBron James often takes matters into his own hands following losses, and 2) Miami has not dropped back-to-back contests since Jan. 8 and 10.

B – Butt-slap. Chad Johnson learned the hard way that patting a team member on the butt has to be reserved for the playing field. In other words, the court room is out of bounds. Johnson was on his way to getting off mostly unscathed on Monday when he issued a plea to his probation violation stemming from a domestic violence case. The judge, though, took offense to the former receiver’s tap on the backside of his lawyer, and Johnson was promptly hit with 30 days in the slammer.
Weekly Q&A with Doc’s Sports Expert Handicapper Vegas Sports Informer
by Doc's Sports - 6/11/2013
As previously discussed, the Las Vegas books cleaned-up when Indiana beat Miami straight up as a two-point home underdog in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals a few Saturday’s ago. How did they fare this past Sunday with the Heats’ 19-point rout of San Antonio as five-point home favorites in Game 2 of the NBA Finals?
Case of the Mondays: Death March of the Penguins
by Ricky Dimon - 6/10/2013
While the Miami Heat avoided the doom and gloom of a 2-0 NBA Finals deficit heading to San Antonio for three games, the Pittsburgh Penguins marched right out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs over the weekend. They won as many games in their series against Boston as Sidney Crosby had points. Then again, that’s not always a terrible thing…except when that number is a big fat zero.
Back to the Futures: Carolina on Your Mind
by Ricky Dimon - 6/7/2013
Two of the top three favorites to win the College World Series heading into Super Regional action this weekend hail from the Tar Heel State. One, however, will not be advancing to Omaha. That’s because North Carolina and South Carolina find themselves in the same Super Regional. While the future is potentially bright for both teams, they are both risky plays given the difficulty of the draw.

V – Victoria Azarenka. Just about every tennis commentator in the business refers to Redfoo as Azarenka’s “companion” when he attends her matches. But let’s just tell it like it is: they’re shagging. While her off-court exploits with her significant other steal most of the headlines, Azarenka is continuing to get it done inside the white lines. The world No. 3 currently finds herself in the French Open quarterfinals.

Case of the Mondays: The Heat is on Miami
by Ricky Dimon - 6/3/2013
Herm Edwards once said, “You play…to win…the game.” This is true, but you also play the game because it is not won on paper. If it was, the Miami Heat would not be in a Game 7 and the Pittsburgh Penguins would not be trailing the Eastern Conference Finals 1-0.

Weekly Top Betting Props: 2013 NFL Free Agent Wide Receivers
by Dave Schwab - 5/28/2013
This offseason a few prominent NFL wide receivers found a new place to apply their skills via the free agent market. Bovada has already released prop bets covering expectations for their performance next season in terms of an “over/under” on total receiving yards. The following is a closer look at each bet.
Case of the Mondays: Pacers Put Through Their Paces
by Ricky Dimon - 5/27/2013
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: heavily-favored Miami loses Game 2 at home to Indiana, wakes up and steals a game on the road to get back in the series, then dominates the rest of it before going on to win the NBA Championship. While last year’s Heat squad did just that, this season’s version is still several steps away. But LeBron James and company needed one fewer game than they did in 2012 to regain home-court advantage against Indiana (they cruised through Game 3 on Sunday, whereas last year they trailed 2-1 before winning Game 4).
Back to the Futures: Heat Being Turned Up in All Sports
by Ricky Dimon - 5/22/2013
The Heat and Pacers can begin sorting out their pseudo-feud on the basketball court tonight. The Tiger-Sergio feud has reached a boil and is overshadowing strong fields on both the European and PGA Tours this week. In hockey, heavily-favored Chicago is on thin ice. In tennis, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are ready to lead the way on the red dirt of Roland Garros.

Case of the Mondays: The City That’s Gone to Sleep
by Ricky Dimon - 5/20/2013
The Giants underachieved. The Jets were an embarrassment. The Mets are terrible. The Yankees are playing well but currently unable to pull away from Boston. New York’s two teams that are (er, were in the Knicks’ case) involved in postseasons just endured a hellish week. The Knicks bowed out of the NBA Playoffs and the Rangers are on course to make a similarly unceremonious exit from the quest for the cup.
Back to the Futures: Preakness Could Be Orb’s Lucky Day
by Ricky Dimon - 5/15/2013
The stars appear to be aligning for Orb to become the 34th horse to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and put himself one Belmont win away from the Triple Crown. Saturday’s field in Baltimore is down to nine, although Orb could get some competition from Departing, Goldencents, and Itsmyluckyday. And speaking of being one win away, both the Spurs and Grizzlies are just that. The Western Conference Finals could be set as early as Thursday.
