by Ricky Dimon - 5/5/2014
A wild first round of the NBA playoffs is finally over, but not before a whopping five Game 7’s took place. The Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Toronto Raptors all saw their seasons come to an end in do-or-die situations last weekend. It is also a do-or-die time of year on the pitch as the final week of Premier League action takes center stage.

The MLB regular season wraps up its first month of play this Wednesday night, making it a good time to take a closer look at some of the early betting trends. The biggest surprise so far has been the Milwaukee Brewers with a 20-7 start through Tuesday night’s games. That has been good enough to open an early 6.5-game lead over favored St. Louis in the NL Central Division title race.

A. Age limit. New NBA commissioner Adam Silver says increasing the league’s age minimum to 20 years old is one of his top priorities. He also appears to have the support of a vast majority of NBA owners. That would mean no more one-and-dones (or at least not many) and maybe a lot more banners in the rafters of Rupp Arena.
Back to the Futures: 2014 NFL Schedule is Out
by Ricky Dimon - 4/24/2014
“Win, win, win, possible loss, win, win, win, win….” That’s how most sports fans are spending their Thursday after the 2014 NFL schedule was released on Wednesday evening. Sportsbooks also wasted no time putting out the lines for Week 1, which features plenty of intriguing showdowns—including Peyton Manning vs. the Colts.

Doc’s Sports: Through the first 10 games of this year’s NBA playoffs, the underdogs are 6-4 straight up with a 7-3 record against the spread. Do you see this early trend continuing, or will the favorites start taking control of these opening-round series?

Case of the Mondays: Pacers Continue Where They Left Off
by Ricky Dimon - 4/21/2014
The first few days off the NBA and NHL playoffs provided plenty of excitement. Several teams, though, wish that had not been the case. It was a rough week for the Indiana Pacers, who back-doored their way into the Eastern Conference’s top seed but promptly dropped their playoff opener. On the ice, the Chicago Blackhawks saw their title defense get off to a painful start—to put it mildly.

A. Aldon Smith. Another chapter was added to Smith’s story of off-the-field issues last Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport. The 49ers’ defensive end had been randomly selected for secondary screening when he reportedly became uncooperative with a TSA agent and indicated that he had a bomb. Um, what? San Francisco is +650 to win the Super Bowl, according to Bovada Sportsbook.

There is just one more night left in the NBA’s regular season as 16 teams continue to prepare to start their quest for this year’s NBA title. It gets extremely hard to handicap actual games this time of the season since you are not sure which players will play and which ones might rest. The sportsbooks will also be leery about releasing any individual player props for this final round of regular season games for the very same reason.

A. Atlanta. Atlanta sports franchises rarely win championships, but Falcons’ owner Arthur Blank sure isn’t giving up. Blank and Major League Soccer are expected to announce on Wednesday that Atlanta will be the home of the MLS’ 22nd franchise. The team would begin play in 2017, when the Falcons’ new $1.2 billion stadium opens. Bovada Sportsbook has L.A. and Kansas City as +600 co-favorites to win the 2014 MLS Cup.

Back to the Futures: Quest for the Cup About to Begin
by Ricky Dimon - 4/15/2014
It’s not a bad time of year to be a sports fan. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are set to begin, and the NBA’s postseason will not be far behind. We’re two weeks into the Major League Baseball season, so excitement predominates prior to the dog days of summer. The 2014 PGA Tour unofficially kicked off last week in Augusta, where Bubba Watson’s driver made people forget Tiger Woods wasn’t at the Masters. Okay, not really, but Bubba was impressive.
Case of the Mondays: Bubba Blitzes the Field
by Ricky Dimon - 4/14/2014
Bubba Watson did not exactly run away with the Masters, but that was as close to a dominant performance you were going to get without Tiger Woods in the field. In comparison with Bubba’s previous win at Augusta National in 2012, this was a royal butt-kicking. While the former University of Georgia standout put on a second green jacket, the rest of the best golfers in the world were stewing on what could have been in a tournament that was without both Tiger and Phil Mickelson during the weekend.
Back to the Futures: A Tradition Unlike Any Other
by Ricky Dimon - 4/8/2014
It’s springtime, which means baseball, the NBA playoffs, and the NFL Draft. But it also means the event that really ushers in the official start of spring is finally here. It’s the Masters and Augusta National, the most famous golf tournament in the world at the most famous course in the world. No Tiger Woods? No matter.

The problem with turning these golden opportunities into cold hard cash is the difficulty in making the correct picks on a consistent basis.
Case of the Mondays: Dream Dies for Florida, Wisconsin
by Ricky Dimon - 4/7/2014
Florida and Wisconsin looked poised to play on Monday. The Gators led their Final Four showdown against Connecticut 16-4, and the Badgers stopped a Kentucky run to snag a five-point advantage of their own late in the second half. Instead, the National Championship will pit the Huskies against the Wildcats.
