by Aaron Smith - 9/12/2014
The football season is underway across the board, and there’s been plenty of action in the opening weeks. The Big Ten has given the national media more reasons to pick on them in college football. The biggest story in the NFL right now is the Ray Rice/NFL controversy. That situation is a total mess, and it has become completely evident that someone isn’t telling the truth.

A. Antonio Brown. What do you get when you combine the NFL and MMA? Answer: Antonio Brown! The Steelers’ receiver and punt returner karate-chopped Browns’ punter Spencer Lanning during a return in Pittsburgh’s 30-27 Week 1 victory. For his efforts, Brown was fined $8,200. The Steelers are +350 at Bodog Sportsbook to win the AFC North.
Sports Betting Futures Weekly Report: Patriots No Longer Beats of the East?
by Ricky Dimon - 9/11/2014
If there is one thing to remember about the NFL, it’s to expect the unexpected. Just ask Roger Goodell and Ray Rice, who probably are not doing today what they expected to be doing on this day if you asked them a week ago. As for the on-field surprises, Week 1 gave us a Miami win over New England and a Buffalo victory at Chicago. On the college gridiron, though, favorites are so far taking care of business for the most part.

Doc’s Sports: In a recent post in your blog, Straight Bet Talk, you commented on the current state of the Big Ten, which is obviously a conference near and dear to our hearts given Doc’s Wisconsin roots. Do you think any of the teams can bounce back from such a dismal start to seriously compete for a playoff spot this year?
Case of the Mondays: Jerry World in a World of Hurt
by Ricky Dimon - 9/8/2014
Everyone except the Green Bay Packers was undefeated heading into Sunday. But misery loves company, and the Packers now have plenty of it—including from teams like Dallas and Kansas City. Week 1 was especially cruel for the Cowboys and Chiefs, either due to poor performances or injuries…or both. On the college gridiron, meanwhile, rivals Michigan and Ohio State both must be laughing at each other in the wake of Saturday’s developments.

A. Angel Di Maria. Real Madrid and Manchester United last week agreed on a transfer fee of $100 million for Di Maria, an Argentine attacking midfielder. He is set to move from the Spanish club to Manchester, where United is in desperate need of some help after recording one loss and two draws in its first three English Premier League matches of the season. SuperBook has Man U at +1000 to win the Premier League; Chelsea is -137 favorite.
Sports Betting Tips and Advice: No Room for Emotion in Wagering
by Jeremy Martin - 9/3/2014
I have been covering the sports betting industry as a journalist for almost 20 years. One of my first assignments involving the industry saw me interviewing a Las Vegas oddsmaker to find out the factors that went into setting lines. One of the most interesting aspects of this interview was the fact that this oddsmaker told me, when I asked him about his favorite sports franchises, that he gave up following teams years ago and that he did not even like sports anymore. To him it was just a job.

Doc’s Sports: The new college football season kicks things off this week with a couple of huge showdowns on the slate. Starting with Thursday’s No. 21Texas A&M vs. No. 9 South Carolina matchup in the SEC, how do you see this game shaking out with the Gamecocks favored by double-digits with most of the Las Vegas books?
Case of the Mondays: Bradford Suffers Torn ACL—Again
by Ricky Dimon - 8/25/2014
The NFL preseason is awesome…if you’re a fan of players going down with injuries and all but ending teams’ hopes before meaningful action even begins. That’s what happened in the case of the St. Louis Rams, who in between a few Michael Sam sacks of Johnny Manziel experienced some awful luck in their third preseason contest. Meanwhile, Team USA has finalized its roster for the upcoming FIBA World Cup.

A. Aaron Murray. Being a backup rookie quarterback in the NFL is often a lonely job, but Murray will have some company in Kansas City. The former UGA star’s girlfriend, Kacie McDonnell, is leaving her Philadelphia job as a reporter and heading to K.C. to work for a new station. As a quick Google search will confirm, that is some seriously good news for Murray. 5Dimes Sportsbook has Kansas City as a -3 home favorite over Minnesota on Saturday.
Back to the Futures: Winston Favored to Repeat, but There Will Be No Repeat at U.S. Open
by Ricky Dimon - 8/20/2014
Unsurprisingly, 2013 winner Jameis Winston is the Heisman Trophy favorite as the 2014 college football season gets underway next week—to an even greater extent now that Braxton Miller is out for the year. On the tennis court, there will be no repeat on the men’s side at the upcoming U.S. Open. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal is out with a wrist injury, opening the door for Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Case of the Mondays: Golden Domers Losing Luster, Falcon Grounded
by Ricky Dimon - 8/18/2014
It’s a great time of year with football underway, baseball pennant races heating up, playoffs getting started in golf and NASCAR, and tennis’ last Grand Slam of 2014 on the horizon in New York. For some football teams, though, a disappointing preseason cannot end soon enough. The FedEx Cup playoffs are beginning—and will end—without Tiger Woods. And the U.S. Open will be without defending champion Rafael Nadal.

There are very few secrets when it comes to gaining an edge against the oddsmakers as there is a reason why sportsbooks make as much money as they do. That does not mean that you cannot create a profitable edge for yourself if you know where and how to look.
Back to the Futures: Who Will be the NFL’s Worst?
by Ricky Dimon - 8/15/2014
Preseason action on the gridiron is well underway as the 2014 NFL campaign looms large on the immediate horizon. Will the Jaguars keep the title of worst team in the league in the AFC South? Will Aaron Rodgers bounce back? As football season begins, though, do not forget about more under-the-radar sports. The 2014-15 English Premier League begins this weekend, and tennis’ final Grand Slam of the season is one week away from getting underway in New York.
