Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 9/15/2009
According to legend, early in the week is the time when professional bettors make some of their moves – the other most important time is just prior to kickoff – and they tear apart the ripe lines from the Las Vegas Sports Consultants. For the last two years I have tracked the opening steam movements of lines in both college football and the NFL. The idea was to see if the “sharp” money was really that, or if the idea of trailing these severe early line movements was merely a myth.

It was a long way from pretty, but in the end a win is a win, and that's what Josh McDaniels really needed. After falling down 7-6 in the last minute of a snoozefest at Cincinnati, Brandon Stokely won it with a bizarre and unlikely touchdown. A deflected pass essentially landed in his arms, and when he looked at the endzone there was absolutely nothing in his way for 87 yards.
Doc's Friday Public Action Report

It's time for the second installment of the Public Action Report for this football season. Because it's early, I'll give a quick refresher. I am looking for games where the large majority of betting action is on one team yet the line is not moving like you would expect it would in that case.

The Tide need to work on kickoff coverage and improving their discipline, but their defense is just as good as advertised. They essentially shut down the Virginia Tech offense all night - especially through the air. As impressively, the Tide looked very good on offense as well. They were breaking in a new QB, but that didn't slow them down on their way to a win that was more dominating than the 10-point margin would indicate.
Doc's Friday Public Action Report

Welcome back to the beginning of the third season of the Public Action Report. Each week I basically am on the lookout for one thing with this report - strange line movement in college football and the NFL. When the action on one team is lopsided then you would generally expect the line for that team to move upwards.

It's about freaking time. Smith has taken a step to finally start to salvage the reputation he has ruined time and again since bowl season last year at Alabama - he has finally agreed to terms on a contract and will be joining the Bengals. The move comes far too late for him to make the starting lineup at right guard, and if history is any indicator this holdup could set back his career for a long time.

The NFL has another criminal. By now the league has so many of them that it's impossible to keep track. Second year Buccaneer Talib, a cornerback out of Kansas, faces pretty typical charges for an NFLer - simple battery and resisting arrest. He apparently didn't want to pay a $50 cab fare, so he decided to hit the cabbie a few times.

Roy Jones Jr. has seriously tarnished his reputation with some bad losses the last couple of years, but on Saturday night the 40 year old looked like he was back on top of his game. He totally dominated former champ Jeff Lacy to retain his NABO light heavyweight title and move to 54-5 with a 10th round TKO.

As unlikely it seems, Pirates' fans actually had something worth watching this weekend. Rookie Andrew McCutchen became just the 10th player in the 122-year history of the team to hit three home runs in a game. He was an unlikely hero, but then that's all Pittsburgh has these days. The 22 year old only made his major league debut at the start of June, and the three home runs doubled his career total.

Another major competitor to the UFC bites the dust, and this time it was a former UFC champion who brought it down. Josh Barnett was scheduled to fight Fedor Emelianenko at the next Affliction event on Aug. 1, but he tested positive for steroids this week. That's the same thing that caused him to be kicked out of the UFC and stripped of his title.

George Orwell wasn't a fan of Big Brother, so he likely wouldn't be a big MLS fan. Houston forward Brian Ching was watching his team play on TV because he was playing for the U.S. team in the Gold Cup later on the same night. He was unhappy with a the refereeing, so he said so on Twitter.
