Doc’s Public Action Report
by T.O. Whenham - 11/7/2009
It was a good weekend for the Public Action Report. The line movement pointed us at four winners in seven tries including two nice upset wins in the Big Ten - Illinois and Minnesota. This week there are six games that fit the bill - line movement that doesn't make sense given one-sided action on the game - four in college and two more in the NFL.
Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements
by Robert Ferringo - 11/4/2009
Over the last two weeks the college early line movements have been spot on, going 6-1-1 ATS. I registered one 'push' because the Southern Miss-Houston game was both a win and loss depending on the number that each bettor received. The same goes for the Atlanta-New Orleans game in the NFL.

The Patriots owe a debt to Ted Ginn, Jr. New England now has a two-loss advantage atop their division, and it's all because the Jets couldn't contain the shifty Ginn. The kick returner took a kick back 100 yards for a TD early in the third quarter, and bested that by going 101 yards for a score later in the same period. Not only did he make the difference in the game, but Ginn became the first player since 1967 to return two kicks in the same quarter, and his 299 return yards was the second best ever. Not bad for a guy who was benched to start the game.

As often tends to be the case, the Public Action Report did a good job of picking out an upset last week. In this case, it helped us spot the otherwise surprising upset of Miami by Clemson. Here's hoping that it offers some good insight again this time around. It will have lots of opportunity to do so - there are no NFL games available, but a whole pile of college games that fit the criteria.

I can say that in my years of tracking these movements I've never seen so many steam moves in the NFL. I am tracking five but there very easily could have been three or four more that I added to track. Looks like the books can't pump up the favorites high enough, fast enough.

Memo to Miami players: NFL games are four quarters long, not three. Through three quarters the Dolphins were engineering an impressive upset, leading the Saints by 10 and frustrating Drew Brees. Then the Saints scored 22 unanswered fourth quarter points to take a convincing lead of their own to stay undefeated. Ouch.
Doc’s Friday Public Action Report

There are six games to consider this week in the Public Action Report - two in the NFL, and four in college football. As you may recall, the games that capture our attention here are ones that have line movement that doesn't make sense given the betting patterns.

Thursday nights have been chalky the last two weeks, with the road favorites coming through (if only because I bet against them) after a strong run (13-2-1 ATS) by the Thursday night dogs. The road team is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings and UNC has been an awful favorite over the last several years. This is actually the first meeting since 2004 between these groups and a rare primetime spot for UNC.

Texas is still undefeated, but they didn't exactly build up their reputation with their latest win. In one of the worst Red River games in recent years, Texas was outplayed for much of the game by Oklahoma, but managed to escape with a 16-13 win. Colt McCoy was again lousy, throwing for his lowest total since his freshman year, and serving up a remarkably bad interception.

The sharp early college action had a successful week, with our tracked teams going 4-2 ATS. This season the college early line movements are just 14-23 ATS while the NFL moves (2-1-1 this week) are a decent 10-6-1 ATS. Overall, the early big movers are just 24-29-1 ATS.

The Crimson Tide continue to look like the best team in the country in my eyes. They confirmed it this week as they thoroughly dismantled Ole Miss on Saturday. Rebels' QB Jevan Snead came into the season as a potential No. 1 pick, but he was left looking ridiculous by the crushing Tide defense.
Doc’s Friday Public Action Report

There is an amazing amount of movement to talk about on the Public Action Report this week. As a reminder, this is our weekly search for line movement that doesn't follow regular expectations. We look for games in which at least 70 percent of the bets placed on a game have been placed on one team.
Football Betting: Early Week Line Movements

According to legend, early in the week is the time when professional bettors make some of their moves - the other most important time is just prior to kickoff - and they tear apart the ripe lines from the Las Vegas Sports Consultants. For the last two years I have tracked the opening steam movements of lines in both college football and the NFL. The idea was to see if the "sharp" money was really that, or if the idea of trailing these severe early line movements was merely a myth. Well, I'm glad to say that we are back at it this season and ready to build on last year's research.

It was a September frustratingly devoid of drama in baseball, but the AL Central has come through in the end. The Twins have surged, the Tigers have faltered, and that brings us to where we are now - tied and awaiting a one-game playoff for the playoff berth. The game was supposed to be played Monday night in Minnesota, but Monday Night Football in the Metrodome has bumped the game to Tuesday afternoon.
Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by T.O. Whenham - 9/25/2009
This week we have a total of eleven games - eight in college and three in the NFL. That's an abnormally high number of games for the second week in a row. Hopefully the quality matches the quantity again. As a quick reminder, the games we are looking at are ones where the public has bet significantly on one side yet the line moves the other way.

Apparently it isn't quite yet time to give up on last season's Super Bowl losers. The Cardinals had a rough start to he season in Week 1, but they bounced back with a nice road win in the second week thanks to a near flawless performance by Kurt Warner. Warner completed 24 of 26 passes for two TDs and a gaudy 131.2 QB rating as his team won in Jacksonville, 31-17.
Doc's Friday Public Action Report
by T.O. Whenham - 9/18/2009
Time for another edition of the Public Action Report, where we look for line movements that don't make sense. Things have been slow to get going so far with the report, but that's the same every year. The more football that is played, the better the current information that books and smart money bettors have, and the more meaningful line moves that go against the public are.
First Big Football Weekend in Vegas
by Vegas Sports Informer - 9/18/2009
Both the NFL and college football were on the TVs in all Las Vegas sports books last weekend. The books had mixed results last weekend, Saturday they killed the customers, Sunday they got killed and Monday they cleaned up again. It was exciting too see the books active and busy because, don’t forget, we are still in a recession and Vegas has been hit hard.
NFL Handicapping: Steam Pick of the Week
by Josh Nagel - 9/17/2009
Steam moves in sports betting happen when large amounts of money come in on one side of a game, moving the line for that game collectively at sports books around the world. With this new weekly feature we will examine a game where a steam move took place and then give reasons to fade, or go against, the steam move.
Free NFL Props Predictions - Week 2
by Jay Horne - 9/17/2009
The opening week of the new NFL season is in the books. After exciting finishes and surprising outcomes may have dampened some of your first week football picks, we turn focus to some of the side action to considering heading into Week 2. While many of the teams may be upside down from last year, many of the same players are continuing old habits.
