Case of the Mondays: Big-market teams feeling ‘Melo’
by Ricky Dimon - 5/13/2013
Aside from the Los Angeles Kings, who are no stranger to winning having lifted the Stanley Cup in 2012, these are dark days for the greater Los Angeles and New York areas. The Anaheim Ducks are out, while the Angels and Dodgers are playing themselves out before their seasons even really start. On the other side of the nation, the Brooklyn Nets are done, and the Knicks—the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed and arguably biggest threat to Miami prior to the NBA Finals—are two games from done trailing Indiana 2-1 in their series.
Back to the Futures: How Will the West be Won?
by Ricky Dimon - 5/9/2013
This wasn’t supposed to be the case, but so far the NL West is the most competitive division in its league and arguably the most competitive division in all of baseball. A team expected to be one of the worst (Colorado) was atop the standings on Wednesday afternoon, and the team expected to win it (Los Angeles) is still in last, even with a little bit of room to spare.

Case of the Mondays: Big Names Coming Up Small
by Ricky Dimon - 5/6/2013
It was a rough weekend for some of the biggest markets and biggest names in sports. New York’s momentum on both the hardwood and the ice came to a crashing halt on Sunday. On the other side of the country, the Dodgers continued to struggle both on and off the diamond. Phil Mickelson had a winner’s trophy right there for him on a silver platter in Charlotte, but he could not grab it. Heck, even Rick Pitino of all people took an ‘L’ over the weekend.
Thank God It’s Friday: Knicks, Thunder Nearing Falls of Matt Barkley Proportions
by Ricky Dimon - 5/3/2013
The first week of the NBA Playoffs were straightforward enough. Home teams took care of business, Miami and San Antonio swept their respective opponents, and other favorites generally cruised. New York and Oklahoma City, however, apparently can’t stand prosperity. Thanks to minor collapses that may soon become major, Round 1 just got a whole lot more interesting. And for some teams, this week just got a whole lot longer.

Back to the Futures: Run For the Roses, Quest For the Cup
by Ricky Dimon - 4/30/2013
We’re in the midst of a wild 10-day stretch in sports, starting with day one of the NFL Draft last Thursday and culminating in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Additionally, the NBA Playoffs are in full swing, and the NHL’s postseason begins on Tuesday. Let’s take a moment to sift through the chaos and take a look at future odds.
Thank God It’s Friday: Feeling Blue in the Green Room
by Ricky Dimon - 4/26/2013
Geno Smith did not have a great Thursday, but he was not alone. Smith was bypassed throughout the entire first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, as was Manti Te’o and every single running back in the class (including Eddie Lacy and Giovani Bernard). It was long day for those fellas, but it was a long week for many other teams and athletes in various sports, namely the NBA. The Lakers can start making tee times, and the Hawks, Bucks, and Celtics can do likewise.

Back to the Futures: NFL Schedule is Out, NHL Playoffs are In
by Ricky Dimon - 4/23/2013
The abbreviated NHL regular season ends on Sunday, which means it’s just about time for the blockbuster Stanley Cup Finals between Chicago and Pittsburgh? Oh, darn, we actually have to sit through the first three rounds of the playoffs before that matchup can become a reality…and in an anything-can-happen sport like hockey, it may not become a reality. Contenders like Boston, Montreal, and Anaheim will hope to play spoiler roles.
Back to the Futures: The Heat is On as NBA Playoffs Approach
by Ricky Dimon - 4/18/2013
The NBA regular season is painfully long and often painfully boring. At last, however, it’s over. The playoffs are long, too, but there’s nothing painful about them. This is the time of year when professional basketball players actually remember that there is such a thing as defense while caring almost as much about Ws and Ls as dollar signs. With a host of salivating first-round matchups on the docket, the battle for the NBA Championship should be fast and furious right from the start.

Case of the Mondays: Kobe Falls, Tiger Sinks, Mattingly Melts Down
by Ricky Dimon - 4/15/2013
It was a rough week for the some of the most high-profile teams and players in their respective sports. Kobe Bryant was suddenly lost for the season, Tiger Woods squandered another opportunity at the Masters (this time in even more improbable, controversial fashion), Don Mattingly saw his big-spending Dodgers lose one of their aces, and he was none too pleased about it, and defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski was similarly incensed after — in his mind — being unfairly treated by NASCAR. Yes, a lot happened last week; and not a lot of it good.
Thank God It’s Friday: Agony of Defeat Not Limited to March Madness
by Ricky Dimon - 4/12/2013
March Madness may be over, but this is still a championship time of year. Both the NBA and NHL are rapidly approaching their respective playoffs, and even some of the sometimes-forgotten sports like soccer and golf are delivering the goods right now. Will Lionel Messi take home another Champions League trophy to Barcelona? Will Tiger Woods don another green jacket? Will the Lakers simply make the playoffs? These are just a few of the questions that are soon to be answered.
Back to the Futures: Tiger Overwhelming Favorite For Fifth Green Jacket
by Ricky Dimon - 4/10/2013
College basketball season is over, and even though it left us hungry for more after a ridiculously good National Championship, other activities are on the horizon to whet are sports appetites. Before the NBA heads into postseason play later this month, the best golfers in the world are set to roam the hallowed grounds of Augusta later this week…. Tiger Woods, y’all.
Thank God It’s Friday: The NCAA Has 99 Problems, But the Final Four Isn’t One
by Ricky Dimon - 4/5/2013
It’s been a rough week for the NCAA, which is under fire (specifically president Mark Emmert) for the way it has handled recent scandals. Speaking of scandals, Auburn is accused of playing players (shocker!) and Rutgers is doing its best Penn State impersonation (it will never reach Penn State levels, but it’s blowing every other school out of the water).
This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 4/4/2013
A – Atlanta. The Final Four begins Saturday, Louisville is an overwhelming favorite to win the title, and Russ Smith is an overwhelming favorite to win Most Outstanding Player. Louisville is listed at –150 on Bovada to win the championship, while Smith is a huge 4/5 favorite to win MOP ahead of teammate Peyton Siva (7/1), Michigan's Trey Burke (4/1) and Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams (8/1).
Back to the Futures: Wichita Winning Final Four Would Be a Shocker
by Ricky Dimon - 4/3/2013
We’ve seen some shocking things transpire during this latest installment of March Madness, none more than the Kevin Ware injury, Florida Gulf Coast’s run to the Sweet 16, and Wichita State’s journey to the Final Four. Will midnight finally strike on the last Cinderella? With a Louisville juggernaut looming large and picking up steam by the minute, the answer appears to be “yes”.

Back to the Futures: America’s Pastime Joining Sports-Crazed Season
by Ricky Dimon - 3/30/2013
Sports don’t get much better than they are this time of year. March Madness is in full flight, the NBA is sprinting toward the playoffs, the Masters is one week away, and the NFL Draft is one month away. Now the baseball season is ready to join the fray. That may be bad news for some (such as fans in Miami and Houston), but it’s great for just about everyone else — especially if you live in Los Angeles.
