by Doc's Sports - 8/20/2013
Doc’s Sports: Week 3 of the NFL Preseason usually serves as most team’s dress rehearsal for the regular season opener in two weeks. Are there any games in particular on this week’s slate that you will be paying close attention to?
Back to the Futures: Country-Club Sports Ready for 2013 Swansong
by Ricky Dimon - 8/20/2013
Football is close to taking over. With the exception of October when the MLB playoffs steal some of the limelight, September through next January will be all about pigskin, pigskin, and more pigskin. For a few more weeks, though, golf and tennis will have their respective days in the sun. On the links, the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin on Thursday with The Barclays. On the court, the U.S. Open kicks off on Monday in New York City.
Case of the Mondays: Dodgers Actually Lose a Game
by Ricky Dimon - 8/19/2013
The dog days of summer aren’t always fun, and they certainly haven’t been this time around for a number of high-profile athletes. By Alex Rodriguez’s own admission, things are getting worse and worse for him every day (although he did answer an intentional bean-ball by the Red Sox with a home run on Sunday night). The same may go for Johnny Manziel, who is mired in multiple controversies and facing a possible suspension with college football season on the immediate horizon.
Back to the Futures: Football is Here
by Ricky Dimon - 8/13/2013
Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready for some football? Preseason action in the NFL is underway, and the regular seasons at both the college and the professional ranks are just around the corner. Other sports, though, are not going away. It’s all heating up right now with pennant races in full force (or not, in the case of the NL East—among others), a golf major just completed, and another tennis grand slam on the immediate horizon.

A. Ankle-breaker. Normally ankle-breakers are reserved for basketball, and the victims are subject to endless humiliation on the highlight reels. On the baseball diamond, though, Tim Hudson became a more serious victim when he literally broke his ankle on July 24 while trying to make a play at first base. The Braves as a whole, however, have got up off the deck like champs. They are 16-3 since the moment it happened, mostly thanks to a 14-game winning streak that just ended on Saturday night.
This Week in Sports Betting by the Numbers
by Nick Tolomeo - 8/9/2013
On the field, the NFL Preseason officially got underway with the Hall of Fame game on Sunday night. Off the field, the NCAA and autograph seekers continue to swirl around Johnny Manziel. And somewhere in between on and off the field, Alex Rodriguez made his 2013 MLB debut on the day that the league announced his record-breaking suspension. So it was just another week in the world of sports.

Rejoice sports fans and bettors! with the NFL Hall of Fame Game coming up this Sunday, there will not be another Sunday in 2013 without football. As the football season moves into focus, the baseball pennant race is beginning to heat up as the non-waiver trade deadline is this afternoon. MLB division leaders are an odd mix of high-spending clubs like Detroit, Atlanta and the Los Angeles Dodgers and low-payroll squads like Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Oakland. Here is this week’s By the Numbers.

Doc’s Sports: The NFL Preseason gets underway with this Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game in Canton that features two very intriguing teams in Dallas and Miami. What is your take on the Cowboys and the Dolphins heading into this season?
Back to the Futures: Baseball About to Have Company
by Ricky Dimon - 7/29/2013
Since LeBron, Jesus, and the rest of the Miami Heat went back-to-back, baseball has just about had the limelight all to itself. Football season, though, is now on the immediate horizon. Fantasy owners are readying for battle, Titans’ running back Chris Johnson is working out with cheetahs, and the Eagles are starting to lose skill-position players as fast as they lost offensive linemen in 2012. Meanwhile, both golf and tennis have one more major to go this summer.

A. Dr. James Andrews. The three most dreaded words in sports: “Doctor. James. Andrews.” Boston pitcher Clay Buchholz paid a visit to the good doctor earlier this week, and—amazingly enough—did not receive the proverbial death penalty. No Tommy John surgery will be necessary, but Andrews also said that missing the rest of the season was a possibility, and there is no timetable for Buchholz’s return. The Red Sox are +800 at Sportsbook.ag to win the World Series.

The Ryan Braun suspension reverberated around not just the baseball world, but also the sports world, this week. The more things are changing in baseball, the more they stay the same; the Astros can’t win, the Marlins can’t score, and the Boston Red Sox continue to shell out money. While the Marlins could not score for 37 consecutive innings from June 14 to July 22, one Nigerian soccer team scored 79 goals in one game.

by Doc's Sports - 7/23/2013
Doc’s Sports: It is now clear which MLB teams are the contenders and which ones are pretenders as the regular season begins the stretch run to the playoffs. Does this impact your handicapping strategy when breaking down the games?
Case of the Mondays: National Crisis
by Ricky Dimon - 7/22/2013
The proverbial second half of 2013 is not off to a fine start for some, and that includes just about everyone on the Washington Nationals. Already reeling before the all-star break, the Nationals have returned only to lose three in a row. Meanwhile, on the golf course, the third of this season’s four majors went no differently than many others in the last five years for Tiger Woods.

A. Apology. Steelers’ center Maurkice Pouncey apologized on Twitter for wearing a “Free Hernandez” shirt along with his brother, Mike, over the weekend. Mike, who plays for the Dolphins, is expected to meet with his team this week to discuss his apparent show of support for Aaron Hernandez — who has been arrested for murder. As for the Pouncey brothers, they will only be guilty in the court of stupidity.

Doc’s Sports: The second half of the MLB season gets underway this Friday, and all season long in the National League you have been touting Atlanta as the team to beat. Are you sticking with this pick heading into the dog days of summer?

Case of the Mondays: Limping into All-Star Break
by Ricky Dimon - 7/15/2013
The Major League Baseball all-star break has come at a merciful time for more than a few teams, but it remains to be seen if will have a desired effect. Boston lost two games of its AL East lead over Tampa Bay in the last two days, and the Angels have dropped three in a row to fall even farther back of Oakland and Texas in the AL West. Nobody, though, needs the rest more than the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves.
Back to the Futures: The Win-dy City
by Ricky Dimon - 6/25/2013
Two postseasons that were off the chart on the entertainment scale recently came to an end, with Miami winning back-to-back NBA titles before Chicago lifted its second Stanley Cup in the last four years. Still, there is more to be had in the sports world this week. Tiger’s Tiger-less tournament begins on Thursday, the NBA Draft is on the immediate horizon, and Wimbledon is already underway.

Doc’s Sports: Looking back at Miami's thrilling 95-88 victory over San Antonio in Game 7 of this year's NBA Finals last Thursday, how did the Las Vegas books end up for the night in light of the fact that the Heat also covered against the spread and the total stayed “under” in that game?
Case of the Mondays: Bruins in Ruins
by Ricky Dimon - 6/24/2013
It’s not a bad time to be a Bruin. UCLA finds itself in the finals of the College World Series, and Boston is still in the midst of a hotly-contested Stanley Cup Finals series. But while UCLA will play Game 1 on Monday night against Mississippi State, Boston is already on the brink of defeat. The Bruins have watched a 2-1 advantage against Chicago turn into a 3-2 deficit heading into Game 6 at home on Monday.
