Weekly Q&A with Doc’s Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 9/17/2013
Doc’s Sports: The oddsmakers have nailed the total line in the first two weeks on the NFL regular season with 16 games going “over” and 16 staying “under” the closing line. Have you been on the plus side on your selections for the total line, or have you pretty much concentrated on just handicapping the sides?

A. Arizona State. What on Earth was that? If Arizona State jumped on a fumble, the clock should have stopped for change of possession. If Arizona State jumped on a ball that wasn’t a fumble, the clocked should have been stopped for intentional delay of game. Either way, Wisconsin got absolutely screwed. The Sun Devils are +9 road underdogs at Stanford on Saturday, according to Sportsbook.ag.
Case of the Mondays: Wake Me up When September Ends

An 0-2 start by the Jacksonville Jaguars is not exactly a surprise. No, they have a darn good chance of going 0-16. For others, though, being winless through two games of the NFL season is a borderline disaster. NFC South teams Carolina and Tampa Bay fell to 0-2 in heartbreaking fashion, while NFC East members New York and Washington did not come close to putting one in the win column.
Back to the Futures: The NFL is Peyton’s Place
by Ricky Dimon - 9/13/2013
If there is such a thing as a one-man MVP race after one week (which there isn’t, of course), the 2013 NFL is it. With one season in Denver under his belt and a plethora of capable receivers at his disposal, Peyton Manning is off and running—to put it mildly. So, too, are QBs like Teddy Bridgewater and Jameis Winston in the college ranks.

A. Alabama vs. A&M. Well, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. Heading into the rematch, Alabama is No. 1 in the AP and USA Today polls, while Texas A&M registers at No. 6. Johnny Manziel and the Aggies, of course, prevailed in a 29-24 stunner last season in Tuscaloosa. A&M is a +8 home underdog this time around, odds courtesy of Bovada Sportsbook.

Football season is in full swing. Thus far, just two weeks into the start of pro and college football, we’ve had the expected; the Jaguars are 0-1, and the unexpected; the Jets are 1-0. There was a record-setting fine levied in the NFL, and there are record-setting ticket resale prices as College Station prepares to host another “Game of the Century” this Saturday. Let’s look at some numbers for sports betting this week.
Doc’s Sports Fourth Down and Inches

The college football season is just two weeks old, and we are off to one of our best starts in recent memory. After opening things up with an amazing 6-0 run, we followed it up with a 4-2 record this last weekend that netted our $100 bettors an overall profit of $810.

Doc’s Sports: The oddsmakers are already in top form setting lines in the NFL with seven favorites and eight underdogs (one “push”) covering against the spread in Week 1. Of the 16 games, which outcomes surprised you the most?
Weekly Football Betting Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 9/6/2013
A clear sign that I’m getting old? This is the start of the seventh season of the Public Action Report. Good things have staying power, I guess. It’s been a seemingly endless offseason, so it’s a good time to take a good refresher on just what the Public Action Report is all about. Essentially, we are looking at how the public is betting on football games, and we are finding situations where the line movement doesn’t make sense given that public action.

A. Amy Winehouse. They tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no…. It looks like in Lamar Odom’s case, however, he said “yes”. Odom reportedly checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center earlier this week, a few days after an alleged fight with wife Khloe Kardashian and a DUI arrest. It does not sound like the former NBA star’s post-basketball life is off to a good start.
Back to the Futures: Are You Ready for Some Football?
by Ricky Dimon - 9/4/2013
Golf and tennis are winding down, with the FedExCup playoffs almost halfway home and the U.S. Open wrapping up the Grand Slam season. Baseball’s regular-season is also on the home stretch. Football, though, is just now heating up. The college football campaign is underway and NFL kicks off on Thursday with a showdown between Baltimore and Denver.

Week 1 of college football is in the books, University of Iowa student Samantha Lynn Goudie was booked at an Iowa football game with a .341 BAC, and all the books are getting ready for the beginning of the cash cow that is the NFL season.
Doc’s Sports Fourth Down and Inches
by Max Powers - 9/3/2013
Week 1 of the College Football Season is in the books, and what a week it was with a perfect 7-0 record for Doc’s selections. This amazing start translated to a healthy profit of $2600 for our $100 bettors. The highlight of our picks was Washington’s 38-6 rout of Boise State as a 3.5-point home favorite as a 6-unit play. Sometimes luck is all you need after Texas Tech and SMU combined for three touchdowns in the final 5:40 of the fourth quarter to take that game “over” the 63-point line.

A foam finger made its cable TV primetime debut on Sunday, a little ahead of the first NFL Sunday of the year. To the horror of everyone watching, especially Robin Thicke, the foam finger in question was used by Miley Cyrus during the MTV Video Music Awards to simulate various sex acts on stage. Did we need a reminder of how much we need football back on TV?

A. Adam Scott. Scott was no stranger to the epic collapse prior to 2013. This season, though, all he does is win. The Masters champion benefited from several monumental meltdowns at The Barclays on Sunday, namely by Matt Kuchar and Kevin Chappell. As such, Scott’s final-round 66 was good enough for a come-from-behind win in the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Scott is +1600 at Bovada Sportsbook to win this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.
Weekly Q&A with Doc’s Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 8/27/2013
Doc’s Sports: As we head into another college football season, Alabama remains the clear favorite to add a third-straight national title to its resume and its fourth in five years. Do you see the Crimson Tide laying claim to the final BCS Championship before the start of a four-team playoff system next year, or is there a team lurking in the wings that can take them down?
Case of the Mondays: It Could be Worse…Just Ask the Jets
by Ricky Dimon - 8/26/2013
The Royals have dropped out of contention. They Braves are losing bodies left and right. Tiger Woods lost another important golf tournament. Maria Sharapova is out of the U.S. Open. Looking at the draw, Roger Federer might as well be out of the U.S. Open. But, hey, I’ve got good news…. You aren’t the New York Jets!

A. Adderall. That’s what Miguel Tejada blamed for his positive test in violation of Major League Baseball’s drug policy. Kansas City’s second baseman said he had medical permission from the league to use Adderall over the past five years, but his permit expired in April. Tejada continued to use it, and it got him a 105-game suspension. Of course, he probably would have been shelved no matter what because he is also being linked to the Biogenesis scandal.

NFL teams have made it through two weeks of preseason, and most of their players have survived as well. The English Premier League season has begun with more US interest than ever thanks to NBC Sports Network, and a new challenger to ESPN has risen with the debut of Fox Sports 1. If you have cable and a couch, it is a good time to be a sports fan.
