This past offseason, NBA commissioner Adam Silver made a few changes in the wake of teams resting stars during nationally-televised games last season. For one, the 2017-18 season started a week early to cut down on back-to-backs and three-in-four-nights scenarios. Second, Silver can now fine teams at least $100K for resting healthy players in high-profile games. Finally, the NBA also protected 22 "marquee" national TV games in which participating teams would not be involved in a back-to-back or five-games-in-seven-nights scenarios. In addition, no team will have traveled more than 3,500 miles in the seven days before the game.

The Cleveland Cavs are only 26-17 on the year. The Cavs defense has been a major problem all year. They have been burning money in a big way. Cleveland is a miserable 12-30-1 against the spread so far this season. It's hard to believe that a team with LeBron James on it is that bad ATS on the season. It will be interesting to see how this team plays in the next month or two as Isaiah Thomas tries to get accustomed to being on the floor with Cleveland.

As an NBA handicapper, no team aggravates me more than the San Antonio Spurs. You almost never see an early line on their games because you never know what Gregg Popovich will do in regards to playing time - whether a guy is really hurt or not. Well, look for a lot more TBAs on Spurs games for a while as the team has ruled out superstar Kawhi Leonard indefinitely as he continues to rehab his right quadricep tendinopathy.

So far this NBA season has been nothing short of wacky and wild. Just this last week alone, NBA players introduced us to their own version of Fight Club. It started on Monday when tempers flared between the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. Not only did it get chippy on the court, but several Rockets players were caught storming the home team's locker room in an attempt to get at Blake Griffin and Austin Rivers. No punches were thrown, and two Rockets have since been suspended two games each. The main event happened the other night when haymakers were thrown by Arron Afflalo in a game between the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves. While all this makes for entertaining television, the only thing that players should be concerned about is their team's upcoming playoff run.

Look, I watch ESPN probably as much if not more than most sports fans/bettors. But, I'll admit the network irritates me at times when it tries to create news out of thin air. Anything with LaVar Ball, for example. The latest comes from Cleveland, which I believe is the only team that has full-time coverage from a network reporter (pretty sure the Warriors don't). The Cavs are in a major funk and were swept in the regular-season series by the Dubs on Monday night.

Monday was an important day in the NBA because certain players became eligible to be traded by their teams. I'm not going to pretend I understand all the legal mumbo jumbo in the collective bargaining agreement, but basically the Jan. 15 date involved players who re-signed with their previous team this offseason, got a raise of at least 20 percent, had a salary worth more than the minimum and their team was over the cap and used Bird or Early Bird rights to sign them.

Did you think that Celtics general manager Danny Ainge already had landed his white whale in Kyrie Irving? You would be wrong. It's not exactly a secret around the NBA that Ainge covets Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis. Last season, Pelicans GM Dell Demps spoke directly to Davis about Celtics rumors. "He told me that [Boston] was calling, but nothing was going to happen," Davis said. "At the same time, though, you see how organizations treat players. Isaiah Thomas. DeMarcus [Cousins] told me that the [Kings] told him that he wasn't going to get traded, but they traded him. Isaiah took his team to the Eastern Conference finals, and they traded him."

The Minnesota Timberwolves are thrilled with the Jimmy Butler trade they made with the Bulls during last summer's NBA Draft. Butler is playing like an MVP candidate, and the Timberwolves are a lock to make the playoffs for the first time since 2004. They wouldn't change that deal. The Bulls are quite happy, too, as Kris Dunn has taken a huge step forward in Chicago and Finnish rookie Lauri Markkanen could be a future All-Star. However, the key piece of that deal coming back to the Bulls - at least it was thought at the time - was high-flying former Slam Dunk champion Zach LaVine.

The Lakers are a rare team. Like the Yankees or the Cowboys, people always have a massively inflated opinion of them - whether it is warranted or not. It's like the collective psyche craves to live in a world where these teams are great. When they struggle - as the Lakers unquestionably and dramatically are - the public struggles alongside them to figure out how to deal with them and to cope with the fact that recovery will be slow. As a result of the rose-colored glasses always aimed at the team there were people who thought that Lonzo Ball would lead this team into the playoffs, or at least threaten to.

The Toronto Raptors have served notice. On Thursday night, down two of their most important players in Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka, they kicked the ever-loving crap out of eternal Eastern champ LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers. They won by 34, and it was truly and totally impressive. Now, the Cavs are a mess - they have dropped six of eight and were crushed by Minnesota last time out. But it was still impressive.

Could Friday be the Utah Jazz's final game without Nikola Mirotic? Wait, you are probably asking: Doesn't Mirotic play for the Chicago Bulls? Indeed he does, but the tanking Bulls want to deal Mirotic, frankly, so they can get worse and also get a first-round pick for a guy who doesn't really fit into their plans. He can officially be traded at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday. The Jazz are deep into discussions with the Bulls as Utah badly needs a stretch-4. They aren't a great 3-point shooting team and Mirotic is shooting a career high from deep. He has a no-trade clause but is willing to waive it to play for Quin Snyder.

It's not often we get matinee NBA action on a weekday that's not a holiday, but that's the case Thursday as Boston and Philadelphia will tip off at 3 p.m. ET from the O2 Arena in London as part of The Association's efforts at global sports dominance - and the NBA is way ahead in that regard compared to the NFL (most of the world doesn't play American football), NHL and Major League Baseball. The 76ers are one of the most international teams in the NBA as their three-best players are from outside the USA: Joel Embiid (Cameroon), Ben Simmons (Australia) and Dario Saric (Croatia).

It literally makes my skin crawl to even mention the clown LaVar Ball's name. But yet again that loudmouth is in the news. For whatever reason, ESPN.com thinks the guy is newsworthy and sent a reporter to Lithuania to hang around the Ball family; of course, he sent his two youngest sons over there to play professionally instead of getting a free education and playing at a marquee program like UCLA.

Two bad teams have very different motivations for the rest of this NBA season. The Brooklyn Nets don't hold their first-round pick - it goes to Cleveland via Boston - so the Nets aren't going to be tanking any games. They want to build a winning culture and see what guys are going to be part of the future. The Sacramento Kings are on the complete other side of the spectrum. Now that the Nets seem to have a good coach and GM in place and a path to respectability, the Kings have to be called the worst-run organization in the NBA.

When we look at who is going to win the NBA Championship it feels like we are pretending. We all know how it is going to turn out, but we have to pretend that there is some drama so we can believe that there is some sort of point to the next five months of basketball. There have been two coaches who have been fired thus far this season: the Suns' Earl Watson and Grizzlies' David Fizdale. Phoenix has been a bit better under interim coach Jay Triano, while Memphis has been worse under interim J.B. Bickerstaff, although that's partly due to Mike Conley's injury. Long story shot: neither guy is likely to get the full-time job. My prediction for the next coach fired? Orlando's Frank Vogel. He did a pretty good job at Indiana from 2010-16, but the Magic are going backward in his second season (and there's some talent on that roster!). It's also important to note that Vogel was hired by former GM Rob Hennigan, who was fired after last season.

Things have cycled back around to Golden State having the best record in the NBA as of the new year. No one should be even a little surprised by that. Though other teams get on nice runs and get a lot of coverage, everyone knows the Warriors are the class of the NBA, and they will be very hard to beat in the playoffs.
