Week 5 is in the rear view mirror, and the calendar is flipping over to October. Last week’s selections split with USF and Washington winning and New Mexico State and Cincinnati losing. For the season overall, the Top 25 teams have 50 wins and 50 losses against the spread. There were two ties last week (Ole Miss and Baylor). It’s a very interesting week to keep an eye on the Top 25 this weekend since there are far fewer big-name teams on a bye week this Saturday. There will be plenty of action, and I expect a bunch of great games.

OK, lesson learned now. I am done thinking Michigan's players have any heart or pride. Yet again the Wolverines bit me in Week 5 as UM inexplicably lost at home to Minnesota. I said that Brady Hoke was going to be fired last week after a loss to Utah, but now I am 100 percent sure of it. About the only way he could save his job is winning out, and that's just not going to happen. I did hit on UCLA covering at Arizona State as Brett Hundley did play.

With a lot of big name college programs off this week (Alabama, Oregon, Arizona, Oklahoma) there are a lot of other programs to pay attention to this weekend and two of them meet on Saturday night in L.A. Undefeated Oregon State rolls into USC to take on a rested Trojans team that has had two weeks off to lick their wounds after losing outright as heavy favorites against Boston College. The Trojans are nearly 10-point favorites in this one against the Beavers, but given the history in this Pac-12 rivalry that's not necessarily a good thing.

To say that last weekend was a bad week for the Fade the Top 25 selections is an understatement. The picks went 0-3 against the spread for the week. Georgia blew the doors off Troy as the Bulldogs kept the foot on the gas a lot longer than I thought they might. West Virginia deserved to cover against Oklahoma but didn’t finish well. The Florida State pick is the one that hurt the most, though. Since this weekly article is done so early each week, I didn’t know that Jameis Winston would be suspended for the game by the time the game took place.

A decent Week 4 on my college football recommendations. I really thought Oklahoma had a good chance of losing at West Virginia, but the Sooners not only won but covered. I also thought Michigan actually had some heart and wouldn't lose at home to Utah. Oops. I did get Kansas State covering on Thursday night against Auburn, and really the Wildcats should have won but kept shooting themselves in the foot.

The Hokies first broke into the Top 25 following their stunning upset of Ohio State the week before.

Pretty solid Week 3 on my NCAA picks even though Kentucky nearly made me look like an idiot as I expected the Gators would crush the Wildcats. Instead, it took UF three overtimes to avoid a huge home embarrassment. A loss there would have all but guaranteed that Will Muschamp was a goner after the season. I did call Houston covering at BYU in a bit of a letdown game for the Cougars as well as writing this about East Carolina-Virginia Tech, a letdown game for the Hokies :"I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see an outright ECU win here." The results of Week 2 in the AAC are in the books, and I was able to even my mark on the year to 1-1 with the correct call on the “under” 50.5 in SMU’s 46-3 loss to North Texas as a 2.5-point road underdog on a 3-Unit play (using Doc’s Sports Unit Betting System). The Mustangs fell to 0-2 on the year both straight up and against the spread.
