College Football Bowl Game Betting Advice: Biggest Mismatches
by Trevor Whenham - 12/4/2018
The first thing I like to look at when the bowls are set are the biggest mismatches - at least according to the odds. There can be good opportunities in these games - sometimes jumping on the favorites and running with them, and other times by backing the big underdogs. This is a strange year because two of the three biggest mismatches in the eyes of oddsmakers are actually in the championship games - Alabama is a two-touchdown favorite over Oklahoma, and Clemson is favored by 11.5 points against Notre Dame.
2018 College Bowl Game Betting and Handicapping: Tough Lines to Judge
by Trevor Whenham - 12/4/2018
When you first look at the bowl pairings, there are some that stand out as straightforward. You know who you think is going to win, and one side of the spread calls out to you immediately. And then there are games like the three we are going to discuss here. The games which could be really straightforward if everything goes exactly right but which are much more complicated than that because of all the uncertainty, the questions, the reasons to have a headache.

The Top 3 of the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings were unchanged on Tuesday, to little surprise with all three of those schools - Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame - being unbeaten. All eyes, though, were on spots 4-6 following big wins last week for Ohio State over Michigan and Oklahoma at West Virginia.

It's Championship Weekend among the Power 5 Conferences, and it should bring casual fans and bettors some awesome football games. The action gets underway on Friday with two conference championships set to be contested. The first happens in the MAC as 10-2 Buffalo hosts 7-5 Northern Illinois. The Bulls are currently laying 3.5 points with the total set at 49.5. The nightcap sees No. 17 Utah taking on No. 16 Washington at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. for the Pac-12 Championship. As of writing this, the Huskies are laying five points.
College Football Playoff Scenarios with Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 11/27/2018
We are now just one set of games away from the College Football Playoff, and it doesn't really feel like there is too much left to be determined. In fact, it feels really short of drama. Three of the four spots feel quite established, and even the fourth isn't as competitive as it has been in some years. Let's take a look at the remaining contenders, their odds to win the national title from Bovada, and their path to glory:

Week 12 was pretty uneventful around the nation, with 10 of the top 11 teams in the College Football Playoff Top 25 all winning - the only one that didn't was then-No. 9 West Virginia, which torpedoed any shot the Mountaineers had of reaching the playoff.

It's Week 14 in college football, and one look at the matchups this weekend will leave even the most casual of fans salivating at all the excitement. Rivalry Week is one of the best weeks in college football, and this year is no different. Just look at this list of games; No. 4 Michigan vs No. 10 Ohio State, Auburn vs No. 1 Alabama, Oklahoma vs West Virginia, Washington vs Washington State, UCF vs South Florida, Notre Dame vs USC, South Carolina vs Clemson, Utah State vs Boise State, Troy vs Appalachian State, and Florida at Florida State, just to name a few.
Expert NCAA Football Handicapping; How to Bet Rivalry Games
by Trevor Whenham - 11/20/2018
We are heading into the best weekend of the college football season. So many division and conference races to decide, and all while playing rivalry games. Many of the top teams in the country finish out their regular season by playing their most hated rival, and every year several of those games have major implications beyond just the hatred. This year, for example, Alabama and Auburn and Michigan and Ohio State have massive playoff implications, and the Apple Cup up in Washington could as well.

What athletic program has been a bigger disaster in the last year or so than at Louisville? The basketball team is scandal-ridden and probably looking at major sanctions still to come. It cost Rick Pitino his job and reputation - he'll never coach a major college team again and certainly not in the NBA even though he wants to - as well as costing well-respected AD Tom Jurich his job. Jurich built that overall program from a farm school into an excellent one, which is why the ACC took Louisville a few years back.

And just like that, we have two weeks left in the college football regular season. What a season it has been. We've witnessed upsets, insane plays, last-second covers, two-point conversions, putrid defensive efforts and tons of points. And in one week, we will once again be treated to the "winner-take-all" showdown between Michigan and Ohio State.

Really no big surprises in this week's College Football Playoff Top 25 because there were no major upsets in Week 10. Those things go hand-in-hand. Alabama remains No. 1 and Clemson No. 2. Notre Dame moved up to No. 3 to take the spot of LSU, which dropped to No. 7 following its 29-0 home loss to Alabama. Frankly, No. 7 seems high, but we'll get to that.
Expert College Football Handicapping: Paths to the Playoff with Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 11/8/2018
We are down to just 10 teams that have odds to win the College Football National Championship at Bovada, and ultimately less than that that realistically have a path to success. Our job here, then, is simple - to look at the paths of each team to the playoffs, what things would look like if they made the playoffs, and if there is any value as a result. Without further ado (Odds are to win the national title, not to make the playoffs):

The second edition of the College Football Playoff rankings were released last night, and fans of the Big Ten conference have reason to celebrate but at the same time quiver with fear. The Michigan Wolverines moved up a spot from the No. 5 position to the No. 4 spot, which means if the playoffs started this weekend, the Big Ten would be included in the CFP once again. However, with that No. 4 position comes the daunting task of playing Alabama, and that is almost considered a guaranteed loss based on how rock-solid the Crimson Tide look.

The first College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night, and there weren't any huge surprises but certainly there will be some disappointed coaches in places like Columbus, Orlando and Morgantown. Clearly, the big winner was the SEC with Alabama at No. 1 (shocker), LSU at No. 3, Georgia at No. 6, Kentucky at No. 9 and Florida at No. 11.

It's Week 10 in the Big Ten Conference, and we have two huge games on tap for you. The first game is No. 14 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan, and the second game is No. 3 Notre Dame at Big Ten West-leading Northwestern. These two games not only have serious conference implications but also College Football Playoff implications. As a neutral fan, these are the kind of games you love to watch. They will offer plenty of excitement and drama, and we should be treated to exceptional football.

On the Opening Line Report story Monday, I wrote about how no FBS team had gone winless against the spread this decade - sadly, I didn't really have the time to research if one had done so ever. Connecticut had been the only team yet to cover this season but did last weekend in a close loss to South Florida.

The Big Ten conference is in a world of hurt this year. Not only did the conference's only playoff contender stumble last week, the conference's only Heisman hopeful fell as well. Dwayne Haskins had a performance last week that looks impressive if we go off stats alone. He threw for 470 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing a pick. However, the reality of the matter is that the Ohio State signal caller was far from his best.

LeBron James is obviously one of the greatest players in NBA history, but he's also a visionary of sorts. He has taught his fellow stars how to control the narrative and decide for yourself where you want to go play. James kept signing one-year deals with the Cleveland Cavaliers with a player option in the second year just in case of injury. Kevin Durant has started to do that too. Stars have all the leverage in the NBA.

By now I'm sure we are all aware that NCAA players don't get paid to play and that any acceptance of benefits such as cars, money, meals, or anything else could result in that player being suspended. So, when college players who are NFL Draft quality decided to forgo any remaining eligibility they have in the NCAA to declare for the draft and turn pro, why is it that we always question their decisions? We did so when Christian McCaffrey decided to forgo his team's bowl game in order to focus on the upcoming NFL Draft.

Let me preface this by saying that, like most Americans, I like as much scoring as possible in my sporting events. That said, I believe the most entertaining college football game this weekend will not be from a Power 5 conference but from the American Athletic with No. 10 Central Florida putting the nation's longest winning streak on the line at Memphis.
