College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 9/24/2012
Perhaps I should re-name this column the “Weekly Big Ten Bashathon.” The conference really is making it easy to pile on. Iowa was beaten at home by Central Michigan on Saturday after previously losing at home to Iowa State. Louisiana Tech destroyed Illinois, 52-24, thanks to six Illini turnovers. Did I mention that game was in Champaign?
Looking Back at the Week in College Football Betting
by T.O. Whenham - 9/24/2012
Here’s a look at the highest highs and most crushing lows of the week in college football from a betting perspective. Not to give away the punch line before the joke, but we’re going to spend a lot of time looking at how bad the Big Ten is. It seemed like the conference had bottomed out last week, but it turns out it wasn’t even close. The league heads into conference play now, and that’s a relief for the reputation of the Big Ten — at least when the teams play each other one conference team is sure to come out with a win.
Sharpe Pointers for College Football Betting Week 4 (Plus Free Picks)
by Jason Sharpe - 9/21/2012
Successful college football betting can be a very tough task for those who don’t work full time at it. I spend my entire week researching teams and game matchups while trying to uncover any edge. I will be here each week to share some of my “tricks of the trade” and also offer other insight when it comes to beating the bookies and taking advantage of weak college football odds.
College Football Handicapping: Stanford a Pac-12 Dark Horse
by T.O. Whenham - 9/19/2012
Stanford’s win over USC was perhaps the most impressive thing I have seen so far this season. It wasn’t just a win. It was a total manhandling of a team that was supposed to be a serious National Championship contender. The win left us with a huge question, though — had we overrated USC, or had we underrated Stanford? The way you answer that question will determine how you handle both teams as a bettor going forward.
College Football Handicapping: Four Overhyped Teams
by T.O. Whenham - 9/19/2012
Three games into the college football season is a dangerous time if bettors pay attention to what the media is saying instead of what is actually happening. Teams have played enough games that there have been some outstanding performances, and some teams have inevitably put together outstanding efforts.
College Football handicapping: Teams that are Undervalued
by T.O. Whenham - 9/19/2012
The media outlets covering college football can be brutal. They are quick to jump on a bandwagon when a team shows promise, but they are even quicker to jump off when the team has issues. Sometimes it is warranted, but other times the media gives up on teams too quickly — or doesn’t pay enough attention to a team in the first place.
College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 9/17/2012
I could probably pile on the Big Ten again this week because the conference’s National Championship hopes are gone in the wake of Michigan State being dominated at home by Notre Dame. Wisconsin is clearly lousy. Indiana lost at home to Ball State. But I think my point that the Big Ten is vastly overrated already has been made.
Looking Back at the Week in College Football Betting
by T.O. Whenham - 9/17/2012
We’re back for another week of looking back at the college football week that was from a betting perspective. This week was proof that what makes college football great is that there will always be shocks, upsets, surprises, and general craziness. Each week we’re going to look back at those shocks and surprises. We’ll see the games that made bettors feel invincible, and those that make them feel stupid. We’ll look at the highest of highs for bettors, and the lowest of lows.
College Football Handicapping: Arizona and UCLA Big Pac-12 Surprises
by T.O. Whenham - 9/14/2012
When you look at the standings early in the college football season there are a few teams that stand out as real surprises. Near the top of that list are two squads from the Pac-12. UCLA and Arizona have a lot in common. For years both programs have underachieved and failed to deliver on promise and expectations.
Weekly CFB Mid-Major Betting Report: Ohio Bobcats Week 3
by Aaron Smith - 9/12/2012
We’re back with the third installment of the mid-major betting report. For this year’s mid-major betting report I am following the Ohio Bobcats. The Bobcats got quite a bit of publicity at the start of the season by knocking off Penn State in Happy Valley. While most casual fans won’t pay much attention to the Bobcats the rest of the year, I will cover them until the final day of their season. I’ll be keeping a close eye on Twitter feeds, beat writers, and press conferences from the Bobcats football program. By becoming an expert on the Ohio Bobcats, I hope to show the betting world how one of the most profitable sports betting strategies is specialization.
Looking Back at the Week in College Football Betting
by T.O. Whenham - 9/10/2012
We’re going to try something new here. If it goes well we might even do it again. We’re going to look back at the week that just was in college football from a betting perspective. The shocks and surprises. The moments that make bettors feel like geniuses, and the ones that make you want to give up betting forever. The spectacular victories and the bad, bad, bad beats. The blowouts and the tight games. In short, everything that makes college football betting so great and so frustrating. Eight games stand out this week:
College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 9/10/2012
I’m not here to pile on the Big Ten every week, but the conference really is leaving me little choice in the matter. Penn State is almost humorously bad, with kicker Sam Ficken missing four field goals and having an extra point blocked in the Nittany Lions’ 17-16 loss at Virginia (Cavs were -10). Ficken was the first NCAA player to miss at least four field goals in a game since UAB’s Josh Zahn went 2-for-7 in a double-overtime loss at Tennessee on Sept. 25, 2010.
This Week in College Football Betting by the Numbers
by Adam Richard - 9/6/2012
The early part of a college football season is the time for oddsmakers to pay very close attention to the sport. Unlike the NFL, we are dealing with very young men playing in systems they may not be familiar with and certainly on a level where they may not be completely comfortable.
Weekly CFB Mid-Major Betting Report: Ohio Bobcats Week 2
by Aaron Smith - 9/5/2012
It’s time for the second weekly edition of the mid-major betting report. Last year’s mid-major betting report netted $100 unit bettors $1,280 in profit based on a record of 7-2-1. Last year, I followed the Rice Owls. I will be following the Ohio Bobcats this season. I’ll be keeping an eye on beat writers, Twitter feeds, and press conferences from the Bobcats football program. By becoming an expert on the Ohio Bobcats, I want to show the betting world how specialization is a profitable sports betting strategy.
College Football Handicapping: Big Ten Woes Week 1
by T.O. Whenham - 9/5/2012
In the aftermath of Michigan’s thrashing at the hands of Alabama in Dallas, one statistic stands out above all else — the Big Ten has now lost 10 straight nonconference games against Top 5 opponents. I’m a huge fan of Michigan and a big fan of the Big Ten in general, but even I’m at a loss to defend the conference these days. The sad fact is that it is a long way from the level of the SEC, and at this point probably behind the revamped Big 12 as well.
College Football Handicapping: Teams that May Be Worse Than Expected
by T.O. Whenham - 9/4/2012
It is very tough to get a real sense of what to expect from a college football team before the season starts. There isn’t preseason action to get a glimpse of progress, and access to training camps isn’t nearly as easy to find as it is in the NFL. Bettors form opinions about teams, but more often than in the NFL those opinions prove to be inaccurate once the team hits the field for their first game.
College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 9/3/2012
Most coaches will tell you that their football teams improve most from Week 1 to Week 2. Thus, I try not to read too much into what a team does in its season opener. Still, it’s hard not to wonder if the Big Ten is vastly overrated already.
College Football Handicapping: Best Teams to Bet Against
by Robert Ferringo - 8/30/2012
College football handicapping can be overwhelming for the average bettor. With around 130 teams employing around 80 players apiece that is over 10,000 college football players for gamblers to track. It is nearly impossible to keep up with position battles, injuries, playing time and individual performance. As a result, most bettors simply throw their money behind the schools they know and the teams that have established themselves as traditional powers.
College Football handicapping: No Punting at San Diego State?
by T.O. Whenham - 8/30/2012
San Diego State head coach Rocky Long has the chance to make stats geeks and math nerds exceptionally happy this year if he follows through on his promises this season. For years people have claimed that punting is not an optimal decision. Instead, they would argue that gambling on fourth down would be the right move in almost every circumstance.
Weekly CFB Mid-Major Betting Report: Ohio Bobcats Week 1
by Aaron Smith - 8/29/2012
Welcome to the first installment of this year’s college football mid-major betting report. Last year’s mid-major betting report netted $100 per-unit bettors $1,280 in profit based on a record of 7-2-1. Last year, I followed the Rice Owls. This year it will be the Ohio Bobcats. All season I’ll be following Ohio beat writers, Twitter feeds, and press conferences from the football program. By becoming an expert on this program, I want to show the betting world how specialization is a profitable sports betting strategy.
