This Week in College Football Betting by the Numbers
by Aaron Smith - 10/25/2012
This is the time of the year where the leaves start turning color and falling to the ground. It is also the time of the year where the real BCS National Championship contenders step up and separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Alabama and Florida are still atop the BCS rankings, but those rankings will likely change numerous times in the coming weeks. Taking care of business on the field should be all any team is worried about at this point in the season.
College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead

Could this Saturday’s Duke at Florida State matchup be a preview of the ACC Championship Game? Yes, I can’t believe I just wrote that. Could Duke – Duke!! – win the ACC’s Coastal Division? A great stat: since 2000 Duke has produced one player who has been selected in the NFL Draft, and that was a seventh-rounder.

The Rebels are almost impossibly bad at football. They are pretty much hopeless and almost always have been. Saturday was no exception — the offense passed 31 times and managed 71 yards for their effort. Despite the struggles, though, they still found a way to mess with bettors. Down 32-0 in the fourth quarter they picked up a Boise State fumble, managed not to trip on their own feet, and scored the touchdown that covered the 28-point spread. Despite being horrible, UNLV is now a nicely profitable 4-2-2 ATS on the year.
College Football Handicapping: Big East Exceeding Expectations
by T.O. Whenham - 10/18/2012
Heading into the season it was easy to make fun of the Big East. The conference had lost its best team, it was on the verge of a geographically ridiculous expansion, and it seemed quite possible that no team — including the champion — would come even close to the Top 25. About halfway through the college football season, though, the conference is far exceeding expectations. There are three undefeated teams, and all three are ranked among the Top 21 teams in the country.

The college football season is now slightly past the halfway mark. It seems like just yesterday that the season was kicking off. Time flies when you are having a good time! The first BCS Rankings were released this past Sunday. The biggest surprise was that the Florida Gators are ranked second in the initial BCS standings. While many people are going to get all worked up about which team would finish highest if they all remain unbeaten, history tells us the best thing to do is sit back and let things sort themselves out for several weeks. There are still plenty of land mines in the path for all the unbeaten teams.
College Football Handicapping: West Virginia
by T.O. Whenham - 10/17/2012
West Virginia has been one of the most unbalanced teams in the country — an elite offense paired with an incompetent defense. Up until this past week it didn’t seem to matter. Texas Tech had a program-defining day, though, and the Mountaineers proved no match for them. It was a massacre. Now bettors are left with a big puzzle when it comes to how to deal with this West Virginia team.
College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith almost certainly lost his chance at a National Championship with Saturday’s 49-14 blowout loss at Texas Tech, the school’s worst defeat in 11 years. But did Smith also cost himself the Heisman Trophy?
College Football Handicapping: Huge Game for South Carolina
by T.O. Whenham - 10/12/2012
The South Carolina Gamecocks are playing the most important game in the history of their football program on Saturday at LSU. Given that they have been around since 1892, that’s quite the statement. However, it is unquestionably true.

It was upset week in college football last weekend. The college football rankings were turned upside down as many top teams were tripped up. Florida State’s collapse in Raleigh was the biggest stunner of the weekend. Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles are likely out of the national title picture now, so they’ll have to fight for an ACC title. There are some new teams near the top of the rankings, and many of them will be tested right away.
College Football Handicapping: Penn State from a Betting Perspective
by T.O. Whenham - 10/10/2012
I will admit that, at 4-2, the Nittany Lions have already won as many games as I thought they would win all year. Now that they have won four straight the media and the public are embracing them. That makes sense — they are the quintessential Cinderella story given all the obstacles they are forced to overcome.
College Football Handicapping: Possible Huge Upsets in Coming Weeks
by T.O. Whenham - 10/9/2012
As we have seen every year there have been some huge upsets in college football this year. North Carolina State’s stunner over Florida State this weekend was only the latest. By definition an upset is hard to see coming. For fun, though, I thought it would be interesting to look for five other potential upsets looming over the next six weeks or so of the regular season.
College Football Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead

I have written previously in the space that the problem with Florida State is that it tends to not handle success well. It’s why I liked the Seminoles to not cover two Saturdays ago at South Florida. But once FSU got through that potential trap, things looked good for running the table in the regular season and reaching the BCS National Championship Game.
Looking Back at the Week in College Football Betting
by T.O. Whenham - 10/8/2012
Each Monday we look back at the highs and lows of the college football weekend from a betting perspective. What makes betting on the sport so great and so tough at the same time is that it is so unpredictable. Anything can and usually does happen, and that can lead to intense joy or crushing frustration depending on the side you were on. This week was no exception:
College Football Handicapping: Betting on the Arkansas Razorbacks
by T.O. Whenham - 10/4/2012
We have seen some teams that entered the college football season ranked in the Top 10 fall from grace before. However, at this rate we may never have seen anything like what is going on at Arkansas right now. A month ago they were ranked No. 8 and were being talked about as the biggest threat on Alabama’s schedule. Now they are 1-4, they have found new ways to embarrass themselves every week, and the season is totally spinning out of control.

October is here, and the college football season is in full swing. The SEC looks as dominant as ever, and the Big Ten is once again the media’s punching bag because of the pathetic performance of the conference. John L. Smith is staking his claim as the worst college football coach of all time. Many expected Arkansas to be down after Bobby Petrino was fired, but who could have expected this complete disaster? If Arkansas is wise, they’ll let Tyler Wilson or one of the teams veteran players do the team’s press conferences the rest of the year so Smith doesn’t end up with his foot in his mouth again.
Weekly CFB Mid-Major Betting Report: Ohio Bobcats Week 6
by Aaron Smith - 10/3/2012
Week 6 of the college football season is here. It’s time for another edition of the mid-major betting report. This report will focus on the Ohio Bobcats all season. The Ohio Bobcats are 5-0, but they haven’t cracked the top 25 yet. The Bobcats actually slid a few spots in the polls after last week’s much-closer-than-expected win. In order to become an expert on this team, I’m following players on Twitter; Ohio beat writers, and team press conferences all for important information. The goal of this report is to show how specialization is a profitable betting strategy.
College Football Handicapping: Which Teams Can Run the Table?
by T.O. Whenham - 10/3/2012
As we head into October, there are still 23 undefeated teams in college football. That means that there are 23 fanbases harboring hopes of running the table and finishing the year undefeated. By the end of November, those dreams will be dashed for most of the programs. Time and again we have seen very good teams with favorable schedules falter when the pressure intensifies. It’s almost certain that a team or two will pull it off, though, so let’s look at the chances of all 23 remaining undefeated squads:
College Football Handicapping: Surprises and Disappointments
by T.O. Whenham - 10/2/2012
Now that the first full month of the college football season has passed, it’s a good time to look at what has happened so far and what we have learned. We come into each season full of expectations and opinions. By the time October rolls around, some of them stand strong and others are shattered.

I am going to lay off the Big Ten bashing this week and instead shift my focus to the ACC. While I am a big believer in Florida State, which is now 11/2 at Bovada to win the BCS National Championship Game, there doesn’t appear to be much else in that conference.

On paper this wasn’t the most thrilling week of the college football schedule. It marked the beginning of conference play for those who hadn’t started yet, but there weren’t a whole lot of marquee matchups. As always, though, college football provided more than a few shocks, thrills and heartbreaking moments. For bettors, there were also several games in which a win was turned to a loss in the blink of an eye, and a couple of games that oddsmakers weren’t even in the ballpark with.
