How to Bet College Basketball Early-Season Tournaments
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2013
We’re heading into the preseason tournament portion of the college basketball season. Every year there are more and more of these. From the established and high-profile like Maui, Puerto Rico or the NIT to the truly obscure, there is something for everyone over the next couple of weeks. For bettors, these early tournaments can provide some very good opportunities for early profit. They can also be a money pit, though, if you make sloppy mistakes and fall into the traps these tournaments can lay for you.
College Basketball Handicapping: Potential Upsets
by Trevor Whenham - 11/19/2013
Last weekend we witnessed some big upsets in college basketball. Belmont over North Carolina. Iowa State beating Michigan. Indiana State over Notre Dame. Upsets are a big part of the sport, and a loss in November means very little to the true contenders when things really matter in March. Upsets can be very profitable for bettors, though, because the public backs the ranked teams and ignores live underdogs. Here are seven games in the next two weeks that could have the potential for upsets.
College Basketball Handicapping: Teams that Could Disappoint
by Trevor Whenham - 11/11/2013
When the college season starts, handicappers are challenged by being forced to predict how good teams are when we haven’t seen them play for a long time and don’t know how they have developed. As freshman are more and more ready to contribute at a high level right out of the gate, handicapping top teams gets even tougher because we have no way of knowing how good the freshmen will be, how quickly they will be relied upon, and how effectively they will mesh with the upperclassmen on the roster.
2013-14 ACC Basketball Predictions and Futures Betting Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 11/1/2013
One of the most underrated stories in college basketball over the last five years has been the deterioration of the ACC. Once the premier conference in all of college basketball, the ACC had become a top-heavy mess. The ACC hasn’t finished higher than No. 4 in conference rankings in each of the past three years, and outside of Tobacco Road the level of play has fallen off drastically.
Free College Basketball Picks: Memphis Tigers Futures Odds
by George Monroy - 11/1/2013
The Memphis Tigers have earned three straight NCAA Tournament bids, and they are coming off of a solid 31-5 season were they won the Conference USA Tournament. The Tigers went on to be eliminated in the round of 32 by the Michigan State Spartans in a matchup that they were never competitive in. Memphis will start the 2013-14 men’s college basketball season in the American Athletic Conference, where they will probably be the favorite to win the 10-team conference and earn another bid into the postseason tournament.
2013-14 Big Ten Basketball Predictions and Futures Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 10/25/2013
The Big Ten enjoyed a fantastic 2012-13 college basketball season. They finished as the No. 1-ranked conference in the country, and Michigan carried the banner for the league all the way to the NCAA Championship Game. Indiana experienced a resurgence, and it was nothing but roses for one of the nation’s most stable and venerable leagues.
2013-14 Pac-12 Basketball Predictions and Futures Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 10/25/2013
The Pac-12 is having a very good year. After years on the fringes of the national conversation in both college football and college basketball, the Pac-12 has come roaring back. The football conference might be the best in the country, and the basketball league heads into the 2013-14 season bursting with promise.
2013-14 Mountain West Conference Basketball Predictions and Futures Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 10/25/2013
The Mountain West is the indefinable conference. The Mountain is too talented and too successful to be considered and dismissed as a “mid-major conference”. While the Pac-12 was sorting itself out over the last five years, the Mountain West produced some of the West’s best basketball. But the Mountain West also lacks the big-budget sizzle and overall pedigree of the BCS conferences like the Big East or the Big 12.
2013-14 Big 12 Basketball Predictions and Betting Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 10/23/2013
Kansas has won (or shared) an unprecedented nine consecutive Big 12 regular season championships. Those nine straight banners have been remarkable considering the level of basketball played in the Big 12, which for my money has been the second-best college hoops conference over the last eight years, behind the Big East. This isn’t Gonzaga winning nine straight West Coast Conference Championships. This is the Jayhawks dominating one of the best leagues in the land.
NCAA Basketball National Championship Picks: Value Plays
by Robert Ferringo - 10/16/2013
So if you’re going to make a NCAA basketball futures bet, then you might as well do it the right way. I already discussed which teams I thought offered the worst odds to win the National Championship. Below are the teams that I think that offer the best value for gamblers looking to take on this long-term investment.
College Basketball National Championship Picks: Sucker Bets
by Robert Ferringo - 10/16/2013
I think that the value of betting on which team will win the National Championship is limited, at best. But for those of you that like the challenge, the first thing that you need to do for a successful college basketball futures is figure out which teams ARE NOT going to win the National Championship.
2103-14 American Athletic Conference Basketball Predictions and Futures Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 10/11/2013
College basketball’s first mega-conference, the Big East, had been a dominant force on the national hoops scene over the last several seasons. But due to maneuvers motivated by college football revenue, this offseason the Big East splintered into what seems like 100 different pieces.
2013 Big East Basketball Predictions and Futures Betting Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 10/10/2013
You can’t kill The Beast. The Big East has been the dominant college basketball league in the country over the last five to 10 years. But when several of its flagship members, including Syracuse, Connecticut and Louisville, abandoned the Big East to chase football money in other leagues, that was supposed to be the beginning of the end for the conference.
College Basketball: Odds to Win 2014 National Championship
by Robert Ferringo - 5/16/2013
The college basketball offseason isn’t nearly as sexy as the down time between the major professional sports. But with players leaving early for the NBA Draft, the transfer carousel, some last-minute recruiting commitments, and off-court arrests and suspensions impacting rosters across the land, there is no shortage of storylines as the deck gets reshuffled each summer in one of the most wagered on sports in the nation.
Andrew Wiggins to Kansas Props Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 5/16/2013
I will give college basketball rankings services credit in that they are usually pretty accurate on which players are going to be stars, while it's way more hit-and-miss in college football for obvious reasons. But the fawning over Wiggins it's almost ridiculous. The ironic thing is that he's been the top-rated recruit in the Class of 2013 only since October.
2014 College Basketball National Championship Contenders
by Trevor Whenham - 4/16/2013
The dust has only barely settled on the Final Four, yet it is never too early to look towards next year. Next year’s Championship Game will be played on April 7, 2014, in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. So, which teams are legitimate 2014 college basketball National Championship contenders? And which ones are going to have a rough road? Let’s take a look:
2014 Final Four Predictions: Louisville and Michigan
by Trevor Whenham - 4/10/2013
The dust is still settling from this year’s epic NCAA Tournament Championship Game, but it is never too early to look forward to next year’s game. Louisville and Michigan were both very worthy competitors in the big game, and they put up a heck of a battle. The question now is whether the two teams will be strong National Championship contenders next year.
NCAA Props Odds and Predictions: Next UCLA Basketball Coach
by Alan Matthews - 3/26/2013
That Round of 64 NCAA Tournament game between Minnesota and UCLA really was quite something as it led to decisions that will cost the schools nearly a combined $6 million in buyouts. The Gophers, a perennial underachiever under Tubby Smith in the Big Ten, beat the Bruins, a disappointment the past five seasons under Ben Howland. So despite the fact that UCLA won the Pac-12 regular-season title, Howland was canned. And Minnesota followed suit with Smith after the Gophers lost their second game to Florida.
2013 Big Ten Tournament Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 3/13/2013
It has become a generally accepted theory that the Big Ten is the best college basketball conference in the country. That hypothesis has been spewed by the bobblehead media for months and has now become indoctrinated into the general college basketball betting public.
2013 ACC Tournament Picks and College Basketball Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 3/13/2013
Last year I said it was “a pretty safe bet that either Duke or North Carolina is going to win the ACC Tournament.” And it was, since one of those two schools had won the ACC Tournament 15 times in 16 years. But Florida State pulled a major surprise and beat both Carolina powerhouses en route to the school’s first title.
