College Basketball Picks: Odds and Predictions for Marquee Saturday Games
by Robert Ferringo - 12/3/2010
Below are some odds and predictions for marquee Saturday games. It’s also a list of what you should be watching for seven hours on Saturday if, you know, you don’t have any family or friends, are a raging gambling addict like myself, and would rather spend your day making college basketball picks than trolling the mall looking for the Apple Store:
College Basketball Betting: The Surprises
by T.O. Whenham - 11/26/2010
We’re only a few games into the college basketball season, but already some teams have been far less than we expected them to be, and others have far exceeded expectations. All this is just proof of what smart college basketball handicappers should already know - predicting what 18-21 year olds are going to perform like under pressure is an inexact science at best.
College Basketball Power Rankings - The Conferences
by T.O. Whenham - 11/24/2010
I'm a die hard sports fan. Like most people with the same disease, I love rankings. You put anything into order and the world becomes a better place immediately - no matter wow meaningless the rankings really are. With that spirit in mind I want to set out to rank the six major conferences in college basketball at this early point in the season:
College Basketball Picks: Maui Invitational Odds and Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 11/19/2010
The tournament is regularly able to convince top teams to travel to Hawaii, and this year is no exception. Michigan State, Kentucky, and UConn have 11 National Championships between them. Oklahoma, Washington, and Virginia are feisty squads. Wichita State is a scrappy mid-major always looking for chances to earn respect. Chaminade is the host, so it would be rude to say anything unkind to them.
College Basketball Picks: Illinois vs. Texas Betting Odds and Predictions
by Robert Ferringo - 11/18/2010
Tournaments are the defining characteristic of college basketball success. Of course, the conference and NCAA tournaments at the bedrock of March Madness are the most renowned and revered of the college basketball tournaments. However, if you want a good indicator of who is game to run the table in the tournaments in March, it helps to keep an eye on the tournaments in November.
College Basketball Betting: Overrated Teams
by T.O. Whenham - 11/10/2010
Every year when the preseason college basketball polls come out there are a few teams that inevitably end up ranked higher than they probably deserve to be. It’s not that they may not end up where they are ranked, or that they aren’t good teams. It’s just that people give a lot of teams more credit than they deserve because of the names on their jersey. Here are three teams that are, at this point, overrated. What this proves more than anything else is just how ridiculous and meaningless preseason rankings are.
Big East College Basketball Picks With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/9/2010
The Big East has been a 16-team behemoth over the last few seasons and is college basketball’s mega-conference. It’s the only conference whose odds include a wager on “The Field,” and the league’s setup mirrors its preferred style of play: menacing, overwhelming, deep, and physical. But quantity doesn’t always mean quality and mediocrity abounds in this league this season.
SEC College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/9/2010
As far as college basketball conferences go – the SEC sure is great at football. The SEC has left something to be desired on the college hoops scene over the course of the past several years. Perhaps, not coincidentally, the SEC’s slide to the bottom of the BCS-conference hoops ladder has occurred while the South’s football programs have taken a stranglehold on the college football landscape
College Basketball Odds: High-Value Teams for Betting
by T.O. Whenham - 11/9/2010
As we head into the new college basketball season, everyone is looking for the teams that they will be able to trust to deliver them consistent profits against the college basketball lines over the course of the season. One way that teams can pad your bankroll is by being better than people expect them to be. Here are four teams that seem to me to be underrated at the brink of the start of the season – teams that could be betting sensations:
College Basketball: Georgetown Hoyas Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/9/2010
The Georgetown Hoyas were inconsistent last year, and that came back to bite them in the NCAA Tournament. Despite earning a No. 3 seed in the Big Dance, the Hoyas were upset by the Ohio Bobcats in the first round. Coach John Thompson III expects a lot from his team, and the way they finished last year was definitely a disappointment. Thompson will clearly be looking for some more consistent play from this talented team in the season ahead.
ACC College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/8/2010
The Boys on Tobacco Road have to be feeling pretty good about themselves as we head into another college basketball season. One of their spawn, the Duke Blue Devils, is the reigning college basketball champion. That is now back-to-back title winners for the ACC and over the course of the past decade this league has produced five of the last 10 winners of the March Madness brackets. Surely that is the perfect symbol of this league’s dominance on the college basketball landscape.
Big 12 College Basketball Picks With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/8/2010
A team from Kansas is the consensus preseason No. 1 in this league, which is no different than just about any other year. But this year it is the Kansas State Wildcats and not the Kansas Jayhawks that are enjoying the hype and plaudits that come from being the league favorite. To say that’s a significant change is an understatement.
College Basketball: San Diego State Aztecs Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/8/2010
Steve Fisher has done a great job building up the program at San Diego State over the last few years. The Aztecs have flown under the radar a bit in the Mountain West Conference, but they have been solid every year. Last year the team finished with a 25-9 record and made it into the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs lost a hard-fought battle with Tennessee in the first round, but this year’s team has the potential to be even better than the 2009-10 team. Look for Fisher’s veteran team to do some major damage this season.
Villanova Wildcats Predictions with College Basketball Futures Odds
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/6/2010
An experienced and talented Villanova enters the season ranked No. 6 in the Coaches and AP polls, but not expected to win the Big East. Such is life in the country’s best basketball conference where the Wildcats are picked to finish behind Pitt. In fact, Villanova received fewer first-place votes than both Pitt and Syracuse.
Pac-10 College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/3/2010
It's a good thing for the Pac-10 that plenty of attention is being paid on its impending realignment for 2011. All the focus on what the new league will look like in the future is keeping people from talking about how awful the league is in the present.
Big Ten College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/2/2010
For years and years I have been screaming about how overrated and unproductive Big Ten basketball has been on the national scene. Between Ed Hightower, Brent Musburger, and teams that score – literally – in the 30s, this conference has been college basketball’s idiot cousin for the better part of a decade.
Texas Longhorns College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/2/2010
The Texas Longhorns may have been the most disappointing team in all of college basketball last year. On Jan. 16 of last season, this team was ranked first in the country and had a flawless 17-0 record. They would then proceed to lose 10 of their last 17 games and finish at 24-10. The Longhorns lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Wake Forest.
Kentucky Wildcats College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/2/2010
The Kentucky Wildcats were a top seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament thanks to their terrific freshman class. However, most of their stars have already moved on to the NBA. John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins made their one year in college special, but now the school is left with the tough task of replacing them. There was certainly some disappointment when the Wildcats were beaten by West Virginia last year, but Kentucky had a terrific season overall. John Calipari was rumored to be leaving for an NBA coaching job, but he is still here to guide this basketball team in 2010-11.
2010-11 Florida Gators College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/1/2010
The Florida Gators returned to the NCAA Tournament last season – losing to BYU in the first round -- after a two-year absence followed those back-to-back National Championships. And with all five starters back this year’s team should be the best in Gainesville since Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Co. left. Of course, coach Billy Donovan also left following the repeat, albeit only briefly, to the Orlando Magic.
2010-11 Kansas Jayhawks College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 10/30/2010
Going into the NCAA Tournament last year, Kansas was the heavy favorite to win it all. People around the country were putting Kansas on the final line in their March Madness brackets office pools. The Jayhawks cruised through the first round, but Northern Iowa stunned them in the second round. The upset was the biggest of the tournament, and one of the biggest in the last few years.
