I think it's fair to say that Boston's big free-agent signing of former Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez this past offseason has been one of the worst moves this decade. The Sox gave him a four-year, $88 million deal with an addition vesting option for a fifth year at $22 million. They did this despite the fact Ramirez really could only play shortstop and third base.
Tracking the Nationals: MLB Picks and Handicapping for Washington Baseball
by Dave Schwab - 8/26/2015
The margin for error in Washington's bid for another NL East title is rapidly fading after a disastrous run through August that has the Nationals 5.5 games in back of New York in the division race. A ray of hope to make it back to the postseason for the third time in four seasons has been pinned on a current nine-game homestand that has gotten off to a solid start.

CC Sabathia used to be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but there was always a fear that his weight would end up shortening his career. And that might be the case as the Yankees have placed the big lefty on the DL with a troublesome knee injury that not only might end Sabathia's season but potentially his career.

So did you see the no-hitter by Houston's Mike Fiers on Friday against the Dodgers? It sure looked like he had some sort of weird substance on the inside of his glove. If MLB's commissioner was Roger Goodell, he probably would have been suspended for half the season. But MLB cleared Fiers, so I guess that's that. You see pitchers licking their fingers and such all the time, and technically that's not allowed.
MLB Betting Advice and Handicapping: Totals Trends Report

Football season is about to get underway, but there continues to be chances to make money on the diamond. I think late season provides some nice opportunities because the oddsmakers primary attention is somewhere else. The division races are heating up, and there are plenty of teams still in the race for the final few playoff spots.

Probably the best double-play combination in Philadelphia Phillies history will be reunited with the Los Angeles Dodgers as early as Friday night after Los Angeles acquired former All-Star second baseman Chase Utley from the Phillies with some cash for two minor-leaguers. The Dodgers were looking for help at the position because Howie Kendrick remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Washington is counting on a return to our Nation's Capital for a much-needed spark to keep its season from completely spiraling out of control. The Nationals have lost far more games than they have won in the month of August, and as of Wednesday's results they now find themselves 3.5 games in back of New York in the NL East Division race and in serious danger of missing the playoffs altogether.
Five To Follow MLB Betting: Thursday, August 20, 2015 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/19/2015
Pretty surprising news out of Boston on Tuesday night -- it won't save the Red Sox this season but should be an excellent move going forward. The Sox hired former Tigers team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations. Now, I'm not too shocked that the Sox hired Dombrowski, but so soon is surprising. Apparently the team offered to let GM Ben Cherington keep his job and work under Dombrowski, but Cherington, who put together a World Series roster in 2013, declined.

Baseball has come up with a type of hat/helmet combination for pitchers to wear on the mound to protect them from comebackers, but almost no one wears it because it looks pretty funky. And barring wearing a full helmet with a facemask like a football player, there's just no way to totally protect a guy who is only 50 feet or so from home plate by the time he delivers the ball.
MLB Series Odds with Expert Picks and Predictions

It's a brand new week of baseball in the majors, and some of the series during this time of year start to take on a whole new meaning of importance when it comes to the race to the playoffs. This in turn starts to add even more value to BetOnline's series price odds for a few of this week's matchups.

By the time you read this or maybe by the end of the weekend, we could see two former All-Stars traded to contenders. Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has cleared waivers and thus could be dealt to any team. He's having a lousy season but has been better since returning from the DL and adds a veteran presence and decent left-handed bat.

How about those Toronto Blue Jays? I stayed on their bandwagon to win the AL East even when they were seven games back of the Yankees. Now they are an unstoppable force and have jumped to the +300 second-favorites behind Kansas City (+160) to win the American League pennant and -175 favorites to win the AL East.

Do I think the Detroit Tigers are good enough to claim the AL's second wild-card spot? I don't. They don't have the pitching, especially after trading David Price. However, they are just 4.5 games back of that second spot entering Friday and they get back arguably the best offensive player in baseball in Miguel Cabrera.

The shortstop career of three-time All-Star Starlin Castro is over -- at least it is with the Cubs. Manager Joe Maddon essentially admitted as much; rookie Addison Russell, who is a way better defensive player, is the guy going forward. Maddon wants Castro to transition to second base. He would play there against lefties and probably lefty-hitting Chris Coghlan would start against right-handers.

Not that long ago there was a time that when Stephen Strasburg was on the mound it usually resulted in another notch in the win column for the Washington Nationals. His struggles this season through shaky performances and nagging injuries basically mirrors his team's struggles to stay in the race for another NL East Division title.

I'm just going to flat-out admit that if the Cubs can't win the World Series, I hope the Kansas City Royals do. Did you happen to catch Monday's nationally-televised game against Detroit? It was the home Royals debut of Johnny Cueto, and he was treated like a king. He got standing ovations all night. Great to see how into the game those title-starved fans are. And Cueto dominated in shutting out the Tigers.

How can I lead this story with anyone but the Toronto Blue Jays after how they dominated the New York Yankees over the weekend? The Jays are now just 1.5 games behind the Bombers following the three-game sweep in which they allowed just one run; a week ago, the Yankees led Toronto by six. It was the first time since May 2003 that Toronto swept New York in a series of at least three games.
