NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 2/5/2025
Betting on the game total in hockey is not an easy thing to do. While there is variance in all sports, hockey seems to be one of those games that could be night and day in terms of a team’s performance from game to game. However, numbers don’t lie during the regular season, and that is what we are here for. Let’s take a look at the teams who are lighting up the scoreboard and those who are getting shutout three times in a row (looking at you Philadelphia) and are hitting the under more often than not.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Nashville Predators 7-3
The past 10 games have been a whirlwind for Nashville fans as they have seen their team embark on a five-game winning streak, just to respond with a five-game losing streak immediately after. The offense was clicking across their winning streak as they tallied 27 goals in five games, but they have since scored just eight goals over their current losing streak. Juuse Saros has had a tough go of it over his last four starts as the usually sound goaltender has allowed 4.0 GA/G and these past four starts haven’t exactly been against the league’s best offenses. Over the past 10 games though, Saros has seen the over and the under three times each. His backup, Justus Annunen has propelled the Predators to hit the over more often than not. In Annunen’s four starts during this 10-game stretch, the over has hit in all four games as the netminder has allowed 4.5 GA/G. Nashville now ranks 25th in GA/G in the league. Overall, the Predators have seen the south side of the game total more frequently as they have hit the over in only 42.3% of their games this season.
Boston Bruins 7-3
The Bruins have gone 6-3-1 straight up making it a solid stretch overall, but similarly to Nashville’s inconsistencies, the frequent overs can be contributed to solid scoring one night and really bad goaltending the next. First and foremost, Jeremy Swayman might be playing his way out of Boston. The once top of the line netminder has struggled of late as he has allowed 3.43 GA/G over his last seven starts. His last two may signal he has figured things out, allowing just three goals, but he does not look like the same dominant presence we have grown accustomed to. The offense has shown signs of life over this last 10-game stretch. They have scored four or more goals in five of their past 10 games and have averaged 3.6 GF/G, which is much higher than their 2.76 GF/G season average. In regard to the over frequency, Swayman has allowed five or more goals in three starts over the past 10 games while his backup, Joonas Korpisalo, allowed six goals against Winnipeg. If the offense can keep it up and Swayman keeps struggling, Boston will continue to hit the over. Overall, the Bruins have seen the over hit in 28 of their 55 games this season.
San Jose Sharks 7-3
This one is a bit easier to nail down. High scoring games have become a common theme for the San Jose Sharks since their trade of Mackenzie Blackwood. The offense has managed to average 3.0 GF/G which is higher than their season average and that has slightly aided the high scoring affairs, but the goaltending really has been that bad. The Sharks currently rank last in the NHL in GA/G, allowing 3.67 GA/G. There is a significant gap that is separating them from the 31st ranked Pittsburgh Penguins. Over the last 10 games, the struggles in the crease have been no different. Between Alexandar Georgiev and Yaroslav Askarov, the Sharks have allowed 4.8 GA/G during this stretch. Askarov held the Penguins to just one goal earlier this week and that was the only game since January 10th that the Sharks kept opponents to less than three goals. Overall, the Sharks have seen the over hit in just 26 of their 55 games this season.
Season Standings:
- Columbus Blue Jackets 31-22-1
- Buffalo Sabres 29-15-7
- Pittsburgh Penguins 28-24-3
Under
Columbus Blue Jackets 2-8
Despite leading the NHL in overs, the Columbus Blue Jackets have actually seen the under more frequently than any other team over the past 10 games. The two overs came on the road against Carolina and Dallas who combined to score 12 goals against Columbus. However, in the other eight games the goaltending has been solid. The Blue Jackets have allowed just 1.63 GA/G in the games not against Carolina or Dallas in the previous 10 game stretch. What’s even more impressive for their solid goaltending is that four of these games went to overtime or further and all four of those games hit the under. The offense has flat out disappeared as well for the Blue Jackets. They averaged just 2.7 GF/G during this stretch, which is well below their 3.24 GF/G on the season. It doesn’t help that their leader in points, Zach Werenski, missed their previous game against Buffalo and is day-to-day. Once the offense gets back on track, expect more high scoring games out of the Blue Jackets.
New York Islanders 3-7
The New York Islanders are playing their brand of hockey and it’s finally working. The Islanders have won eight of their last 10 games and the two that they lost were high scoring games that resulted in the over. They are just 1-2 straight up in the three games that hit the over. They are 7-0 straight up in the seven games that saw the south side of the game total. Ilya Sorokin has been elite during this stretch which is what the Islanders depend on for success. Sorokin has allowed just nine goals over his last seven starts. The offense has actually improved during this stretch as they are averaging 3.2 GF/G which is nearly half of a goal more than their season average, but Sorokin has been so elite that the under hits anyways. When Sorokin is on, the Islanders don’t have to do much to get the win and if they invested anything into their offense at the trade deadline, watch out. Overall, the Islanders have seen the under in 26 of their 53 games this season.

Philadelphia Flyers 3-7
Over the past 10 games, the Flyers have gone 4-5-1, but the last four games have been absolutely brutal for the Flyers and their fans. The offense has been nonexistent for Philadelphia over the course of this stretch, but especially over the last four games. The Flyers have tallied just two goals over their last 240+ minutes of hockey and were shutout in three straight games. Over the course of the entire 10 game period, the Flyers offense has averaged just 1.8 GF/G. Their power play unit continues to be one of the worst in the league and their goalies aren’t getting any help from their offense. Hard to win games when you are averaging less than two goals per game, but its good if you took the under. Overall, the Flyers have seen the south side of the game total in 50.9% of their games this season.
Season Standings:
- Anaheim Ducks 17-32-4
- New Jersey Devils 19-32-2
- Dallas Stars 17-30-6
