NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 1/15/2025
Now that we are two weeks into the New Year, let’s see what the trends are around the league relative to the game total. The Chicago Blackhawks and Seattle Kraken are some of the hottest teams at hitting the over thanks to their atrocious goaltending. Jacob Markstrom continues to be the talk of the town in New Jersey, as he has turned this Devils team into an under’s darling. All that and more with the game total trends around the NHL.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Chicago Blackhawks 7-1-2
This is not something you see every day, the Chicago Blackhawks leading the way in a given category. The Blackhawks have seen the over hit in seven of their last 10 games and in four of their last five. To no one’s surprise, the Blackhawks are just 2-8 straight up during this stretch and have lost nine of their last 11 games. The goaltending has been horrendous. Between Petr Mrazek and Arvid Soderblom, the Chicago goaltending has allowed 4.4 GA/G during this stretch and allowed five or more goals in seven of these games. The offense hasn’t done anything to bail them out, as they have mustered just 2.5 GF/G, but that has been the level the offense has performed all season. Chicago has allowed an average of .8 GA/G more than their season average over their last 10, which has led to higher scoring games. Soderblom was having himself a decent start to the year as the backup. However, in his 11 starts since December, he has allowed 3.55 GA/G, and the over has hit in eight of those games while also hitting in his last five starts. Overall, the Blackhawks have seen the north side of the game total in just 19 of their 44 games this season.
Seattle Kraken 7-2-1
Seattle is another team struggling to score goals, and the main reason for their appearance on this list is their lackluster netminding. Seattle has allowed 3.2 GA/G this season, which ranks 24th in the NHL. However, their last 10 games have been much worse, as they are allowing 3.8 GA/G. Joey Daccord has seen the over hit in each of his last three starts, but that can be contributed more to the offense as he allowed just nine goals over those starts. Seattle has been incredibly inconsistent on offense. However, when they are on the Kraken are an over machine. Over their last eight wins, the over is 7-1. Over the last 10 games, the offense is averaging 3.3 GF/G, which is a tick up from their 2.91 GF/G season average. This improved offensive performance has shot the Kraken up the league standings in the overs department. Overall, the Kraken have seen the over hit in 22 of their 45 games this season. Their 22 overs are tied for the sixth most in the league.
Detroit Red Wings 7-2-1
The Red Wings fight the common theme for poor goaltending and can credit the over frequency to their offense. The Red Wings are 7-3 over their last 10 games and are 5-2 when the over hit. Sandwiched between a couple of losses was a seven-game win streak where the offense averaged 4.43 GF/G. Their offense has been killing it in January, as they have recorded three or more goals in each of their six games this month. Lucas Raymond has been a big part of their offensive success over the last 10 games, as he has tallied 14 points and five goals during this stretch. Patrick Kane is another reason as he has picked up some steam, recording 12 points and five goals across their last 10 games. When your offense is averaging over four goals per game, you don’t need your goaltending to do much to hit the over. However, when they are allowing 3.23 GA/G on the season, it is an over’s galore for the Red Wings. Unfortunately, the Red Wings offense has not been able to maintain the momentum on offense and they have seen the over hit in less than 50% of their games on the season.
Season Standings:
- Columbus Blue Jackets 29-14-1
- Pittsburgh Penguins 26-18-2
- Buffalo Sabres 23-12-6
Under
Ottawa Senators 0-8-2
Thanks to their last 10 games, the Senators have the fourth most under performances on the season. Over their last 10 games, Ottawa has shut out their opponent twice while also being shutout twice. Their offense has been lackluster all season, but it has been really bad over their last 10 games. The Senators have recorded just 20 goals over their stretch, with half of those goals coming over their last three games. From December 22nd to January 9th the Senators scored just 10 goals across seven games. As for the goaltending, Leevi Merilainen has been incredible over his last three starts, going 3-0 and allowing just two goals with the under hitting in each of those starts. Anton Forsberg’s struggles continue, as the veteran goalie has allowed 11 goals over his last three starts. However, his offense completely abandoned him as they scored just twice. With no offense, and Merilainen dominating, low scoring games will continue to be a trend in Ottawa.
New Jersey Devils 2-8
The Devils have hit a speed bump over their last 10 games, as they have gone just 4-4-2 straight up. Their offense has disappeared over this 10-game period, as they have scored just 2.4 GA/G, which has pulled New Jersey outside of the Top 10 in scoring. Markstrom continues to be the deal of the century for Devils fans, as he has allowed just 2.13 GA/G over his last eight starts, which has resulted in seven under game total performances. Over Markstrom’s last 15 starts, the under has hit in 14 of those games. Of goalies with at least 30 starts, Markstrom ranks second in GA/G and third in SV%. Overall, the Devils are tied with the Anaheim Ducks for the most under game total performances in the league, with the under hitting nearly 64% of the time.
Florida Panthers 3-7
Like New Jersey, the last 10 games have been anything but kind to the Panthers, who are trying to keep pace with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division. The Panthers are just 4-5-1 during this stretch thanks to some inconsistencies with their offense. They have been shutout twice but have scored four or more goals twice leading their average to be 2.2 GF/G over the last 10 contests. This performance has brought their season average down to just 3.2 GF/G. Depth issues are really beginning to surface for Florida. And with the deadline inching closer, they need to be proactive on the trade market. Overall, Florida has seen the over more frequently. The under has hit in just 21 of their 46 games this season.
