Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 3/5/2025

With less than 25 games remaining in the season, time is running out for you to cash in on the leagues established trends. There has been no better team at covering than the Anaheim Ducks, but teams like Columbus and Tampa Bay are doing it better than anybody right now. The Edmonton Oilers have been struggling lately. And despite some new additions this week via trade, they have been the best team to fade in regard to the spread all season. Without further ado, let’s dive into the hottest and coldest teams in the NHL.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
Tampa Bay Lightning 9-1
The Lightning are one of the hottest teams in hockey right now. They have won and covered nine of their last 10 games and are now just three points behind the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division standings. They have been elite in all facets of the game over the past month. Andrei Vasilevskiy has allowed just 18 goals over his last 11 starts and has recorded two shutouts over that span. He is now second in the NHL in shutouts and second in GA/G (2.18). The offense has been incredible, too. The Lightning have averaged 4.1 GF/G over the past 10 games, which is higher than their season average of 3.56, which is the second-best season average in the league. Tampa Bay is getting hot at the right time. And if Vasilevskiy keeps playing at this level, they may soon be the favorites in the Eastern Conference. Overall, the Lightning are 34-27 ATS this season.
Columbus Blue Jackets 8-2
The Blue Jackets have proven that they are not going away. Each night they keep games close and have worked their way to the top wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Blue Jackets trail the Devils by four points for the final guaranteed spot in the Metro Division. They are just 5-4-1 over their last 10 games but are fresh off a four-game winning streak, that ended in a loss to the hottest team in the NHL. Despite so much adversity this offseason and losing one of their top offensive weapons, the Blue Jackets rank fifth in the NHL in scoring (3.33 GF/G). They have four 20+ goal scorers, with Kirill Marchenko leading the way with 24 goals and blueliner Zach Werenski leading the way with 66 points. Their goaltending is a problem that is limiting Columbus. However, if they add a goaltender at the deadline, this Columbus team could be a real threat in the playoffs. Overall, the Blue Jackets have been one of the best teams ATS this season, covering 62.3% of their games this season.
Season Standings:
- Anaheim Ducks 41-19
- Columbus Blue Jackets 38-23
- San Jose Sharks 38-25
Cold
Utah Hockey Club 2-8
The Hockey Club has covered just two games over their last 10 despite posting a 6-4 record over that span. Utah has won three overtime or shootout games during this stretch, and five of their six wins have been decided by just one goal. After allowing seven goals against Carolina back on February 8th, Karel Vejmelka has allowed just six goals over his last four starts, going 3-1 during that span. Utah has defined inconsistency this season, with their offense showing off one night and then disappearing the next. It also took some time for them to move on from Connor Ingram in the crease. Despite this, Utah remains in the playoff picture, but they sit around .500 in terms of covering the spread. Overall, Utah has covered in just 28 of their 61 games this season.
Edmonton Oilers 2-8
The Oilers have hit a cold spell, going 3-8 over their last 11 games, with two of those wins coming in overtime. They have won just once over their last seven contests and have a -14-goal differential in that span. Their goalie room has struggled lately, as the Oilers have allowed 4.2 GA/G over their last 10 games, with Stuart Skinner allowing 20 goals over his last five starts and Calvin Pickard allowing 22 goals over his last five starts. The offense has also gone cold lately, scoring just 2.9 GF/G, which is much lower than their 3.23 GF/G season average. Despite being solidified in the playoff picture, the Oilers have been the worst team at covering the spread this season, going just 22-39 ATS.
Season Standings:
- Edmonton Oilers 22-39
- New Jersey Devils 24-37
- Nashville Predators 25-36
Moneyline
Hot
Tampa Bay Lightning 9-1
As mentioned earlier, there is no hotter team than the Tampa Bay Lightning. They have rocketed up the division standings and are now within striking distance to take the top spot. Six of their next nine games are away from home, and the Lightning have struggled on the road this season (14-14-2). Therefore, that is worth tracking over the next few weeks, but it doesn’t look like anyone can beat them right now.
Toronto Maple Leafs 8-1-1
Unfortunately for the Lightning, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been the second hottest team in the league, which has allowed for them to stay just ahead of Tampa Bay. The Maple Leafs offense has been incredible during their last 10 games, as they have averaged 4.1 GF/G. They have a tough three-game road stretch ahead, with stops in Vegas, Colorado, and Utah. However, Toronto looks like they are capable of breaking some playoff curses this season.
Cold
Pittsburgh Penguins 2-6-2
The Penguin’s ship is sinking, And with the deadline approaching, it is going down fast. Their last 10-game stretch has cemented the Penguins in ‘seller’ mode. Rickard Rakell (53 points), Erik Karlsson (45 points), Michael Bunting (29 points) are among the names to watch this week. Pittsburgh needs to accept their fate and hit the rebuild button, even if that means moving on from Sidney Crosby as well.
San Jose Sharks 2-5-3
Stop me if you have seen this before, but the San Jose Sharks are one of the coldest teams in the league, and their roster might get worse before the end of the week. With the deadline approaching, San Jose may be shipping off some of their skaters as they continue to look to the seasons to come. Despite their struggles, they are still one of the best teams at covering the spread, covering seven of their last 10 games.
