Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 1/22/2025
This week let’s dive into the money-making trends regarding teams performance against the spread while also looking at the two hottest and coldest teams straight up, over the last 10 games. The Columbus Blue Jackets have been playing lights out and have now found themselves in the playoff conversation and are gaining on the New Jersey Devils, who have been atrocious to watch as of late with no offense. The Washington Capitals are now atop the league’s standings, while the Anaheim Ducks are now in contention for the worst record in the league. With all this and more, let’s take a look at some trends to fill your pockets.

ATS
Hot
Columbus Blue Jackets 8-2
The Blue Jackets are one of the hottest teams in hockey right now, as they have covered eight of their last 10 games and are just coming off a recent six-game winning streak. The Blue Jackets, despite being down heading into the season, have been a bit of a surprise, and this 10-game stretch is a perfect example of that. Four of these games have been extended to shootouts where the Blue Jackets went 3-1, with the lone loss being to the Rangers on the road. Their offense has been particularly good during this stretch, as they have averaged 3.4 GF/G, and with that hot streak they are now in the Top 10 in the league in scoring. The goaltending has improved as well, with Elvis Merzlikins allowing just 3.0 GA/G over his last seven starts, which is below his season average, while Jet Greaves and Daniil Tarasov have combined to allow just four goals in their three starts. Six of their next seven games are on the road, and the Blue Jackets have picked up just 31.4% of their points away from home, but they are firing on all cylinders now. Overall, the Blue Jackets have covered 27 of their 47 games this season.
Montreal Canadiens 8-2
The Montreal Canadiens have also covered eight of their last 10 games and are now third in the NHL in covers. Aside from a blowout loss to Toronto and a late Chicago goal in United Center, the Canadiens have been covering machines. The covers have a significant correlation with wins, as the only two games that Montreal did not cover were losses, while they went 7-0-1 in the eight games they did cover. Like the Blue Jackets, the Canadiens are dominating both sides of the ice. They have tallied 32 goals over their last 10 games, and their goaltending has only allowed just 3.0 GA/G, which is much better than their 3.30 GA/G season average. Despite Sam Montembeault getting the majority of the starts, the real goaltending hero of late has been the backup Jakub Dobes. Dobes has allowed just eight goals over his five starts on the season. If covering correlates with wins, the Canadiens are trending in the right direction, as this hot stretch has pushed them up the Atlantic Division Standings as they now have 52 points and have control of the second Wild Card spot.
Season Leaders:
- Anaheim Ducks 30-17
- Washington Capitals 30-17
- Montreal Canadiens 29-18
Cold
New Jersey Devils 0-10
After an impressive first half of the season, the tides have changed for the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are one of the coldest teams in the league right now and have failed to cover their last 11 games. The offense has taken a vacation, as they have tallied just six goals in their last four games and have averaged just 1.8 GF/G over this 10-game stretch. Everyone has cold stretches, but their goaltending has been nothing short of elite this season, so there is some cause for concern when you can’t bail the netminders out of their 1-3 mistakes per game. Their quartet of Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, and Timo Meier has combined for just 23 points over their last 10 games. Overall, New Jersey is now one of the worst teams in the NHL against the spread, as they have covered just 18 of their 47 games this season.
Carolina Hurricanes 3-7
Despite going 6-3-1 overall over their last 10 games, the Hurricanes have covered just three of them. They did go 3-0 in their three covers, with a big win on the road in Dallas and big wins over Toronto and Vancouver. The offense has been inconsistent of late, as they have averaged just 2.7 GF/G, which is much lower than their 3.29 GF/G season average. They are on a three-game winning streak and have now created some space between themselves and the Devils in the Metro Division Standings. The offense will need to get going again. However, as long as they are winning games, Hurricane fans are happy. Overall, the Hurricanes have gone just 23-25 against the spread this season, indicating it is better to just leave them alone when constructing your slip.
Season Leaders:
- Boston Bruins 17-31
- Colorado Avalanche 18-30
- Edmonton Oilers 18-29
Moneyline
Hot
Washington Capitals 7-0-3
Sticking with our Metro Division heavy trends, the Washington Capitals are currently the hottest team in the NHL as they have picked up points in their last 11 games and they are currently riding a five-game winning streak. Logan Thompson has been dominant as of late, with the goalie appearing in seven straight games and allowing just eight goals in that span, including back-to-back shutout performances against Anaheim and Ottawa. Thompson has elevated his play in the absence of Charlie Lindgren, which has propelled the Capitals in the league standings. Amidst their 11-game point streak, Washington is now atop the league standings with 69 points. Their goaltending is the top group in the league in GA/G, and their offense ranks second in GF/G. Washington is rolling and are making a huge case for the Presidents Trophy this season.
Columbus Blue Jackets 7-2-1
In addition to being a cover darling over the last 10 games, the Blue Jackets are also the second hottest team in hockey, having collected 15 points over their last 10 contests. Though they have lost each of their last two games, the Blue Jackets are still fresh off a six-game winning streak that saw them average 4.17 GF/G. Their performance is over, and the timing of the stretch has had some big implications for their playoff hopes. The Blue Jackets now sit in fourth place of the Metro Division, and while there is still a bit of a gap between them and a guaranteed spot, Columbus does find themselves just one point out of a Wild Card spot. They will need to carry their momentum over the next two weeks as they have six of their next seven games away from home ice.
Cold
Anaheim Ducks 2-6-2
The Anaheim Ducks are the coldest team in the league as of now as they have lost their last four games and have just one win over their last eight games. The offense has been terrible, as they have been shutout three times during this stretch and have managed to average just 1.8 GF/G. This is no surprise, though, as the Ducks are in last place in the NHL, averaging just 2.36 GF/G on the season, while also ranking last in S% and second to last in PP%. Anaheim’s roster only features two double-digit scorers and just one player (Troy Terry) with more than 26 points on the season. If the offense hasn’t been bad enough, the Ducks have allowed 3.75 GA/G over their four-game losing streak. Anaheim may end up being a strong candidate to finish with the worst record in the NHL.
New Jersey Devils 2-5-3
Not only have they been the league’s worst covering team over the last 10 games, but they have also been the second coldest team overall in the league. As mentioned, the offense has been horrendous over the last 10 games. And despite their elite goaltending, they have mustered just seven points over this cold stretch and are currently riding a four-game skid. Thanks to their awful play of late, the Devils are now in third place in the Metro Division and are three points behind Carolina. Though they have some more wiggle room left, Columbus has been one of the hottest teams in the league and are closing the gap that separates them and the final guaranteed spot.
