The NBA All-Star break is right around the corner, and some teams have put their foot on the gas heading into the break. While many see the All-Star break as the unofficial halfway point of the season, this year the All-Star break marks the 66% point of the regular season. Playoff hopefuls are running out of time to make a dash up the standings, and a very crowded Western Conference will go right down to the wire. Here are the hottest and coldest teams against the spread, along with the highest and lowest scorers.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
The Hot
Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers made the biggest midseason trade in NBA history and are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. They have gone 8-1-1 against the spread in their last 10 games, going 9-1 straight up in that span. Luka Doncic debuted against the Jazz last night, and the Lakers easily took care of business. Trading away Anthony Davis was not an easy decision, but the Lakers are now poised to make a deep playoff run in hopes of getting LeBron James one more championship. Their offense has been rolling, with 120 or more points scored in six consecutive games, all of which were victories. The fallout of the Mark Williams trade will leave the Lakers shorthanded at center, but they have more than enough talent elsewhere on the court to compensate. Doncic’s arrival may inflate the Lakers spreads. Therefore, while they have been the hot hand over the last few weeks, this is not an against the spread trend that will necessarily continue.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers will not be in the playoff hunt in the final months of the season, but they have put together an admirable effort to remain respectable. The Trail Blazers are 8-2 against the spread and 7-3 straight up in their last 10 games. They lost their last two games while failing to cover but went an incredible 10-1 straight up and 11-0 against the spread before that. The Trail Blazers were 13-28 before this hot streak, and their change in form over the last few weeks has been remarkable. Anfernee Simons leads the way with 18.5 PPG, but it has been the Portland defense that has allowed the wins to pile up. They have allowed 120 or more points just once in their last 13 games, keeping their opponents to double digits in four of those contests. Portland may have hurt their draft positioning, but the positives to take away from this hot streak are far more valuable than a marginally higher draft pick. This team appears built for the future. And as long as they don’t start resting starters down the stretch, they will keep on covering inflated spreads.
The Cold
Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks have gone just 2-8 against the spread and 3-7 straight up in their last 10 games. This is a team that is expected to challenge for an NBA title with Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they have been consistently falling short. Half of those aforementioned losses came when the Bucks were favorites in the game. Milwaukee was unable to land any of the big names at the trade deadline and shipped out Khris Middleton for Kyle Kuzma to Washington. Kuzma won’t help the Bucks succeed, but I have no doubt Milwaukee will keep getting inflated lines for the rest of the season. The Bucks have been cold against the spread as a result, and that is a trend you can bank on continuing.
Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic have been one of the most puzzling teams to dissect in the NBA. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner were both out for months, and the Magic were expected to plummet down the standings. That was not the case, as they were able to float around .500 until their superstars returned. Both are back on the court for the Magic, but Orlando is suddenly losing games like never before this season. Getting your two leading scorers back from injury, and then getting worse, is hard to envision. The Magic have gone 2-13 against the spread in their last 15 games, and 3-12 straight up. They are the coldest team in the NBA despite playing excellent defense on a nightly basis. Their slow-paced offense is no longer the norm in the modern day NBA, and they will need to pick up the pace with the basketball if they want to get back in the win column.
High Scorers
Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks ruined their franchise by trading away Luka Doncic. A fanbase has never been more disappointed in the front office, but their offensive revitalization will help ease that pain. Dallas has gone over the total in 8 of their last 10 games, going 5-5 in that span. Anthony Davis will help solidify their defense, but his lingering injuries have forced him back on the sidelines for a couple of weeks. The total has closed at 231 points or higher on five occasions in the last two weeks for the Mavericks, and they went a perfect 5-0 to the Over. The fast pace of play they use now that Doncic isn’t hogging the ball will see this trend continue until the oddsmakers can correctly adjust to this new-look Mavericks team.
San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs were always a year away from making waves in the playoffs, and their defense has completely fallen off a cliff. They have gone over the total in 8 of their last 10 games and have just four wins to show for it in that span. Victor Wembanyama does an excellent job at patrolling the paint, but they have struggled at slowing down the three-ball. The Spurs play at a fast pace, have a better offense than defense, and don’t have mounting expectations like other NBA contenders. This is a perfect recipe for the over to continue cashing.
Low Scorers
Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn defense has stepped up in a big way. The Nets have stayed under the total in 9 of their last 10 games and have gone 5-5 in that span. Brooklyn has been one of the worst teams on the offensive end, but their defense has single-handedly won them multiple games this season. Their closing total has been 220 or more points just once in the last 10 games, but they keep staying under. At least one team has been held to single digits in nine of their last 10 games. Their 99-97 and 97-89 victories with a 99-95 defeat made the Nets box scores look like the ’80s. This team has embraced its identity, and it is starting to pay dividends as the team begins to get healthier. The Nets won’t be dashing the play-in tournament this season, but their trend of Unders will keep on rolling against other defensively sound teams.
Charlotte Hornets
Charlotte has lost their flair, and the team is simply waiting for the season to end. The Hornets have gone under the total in 7 of their last 10 and have two wins to show for it. LaMelo Ball was the spark of this team, but injuries to Ball and Brandon Miller combined with the failed trade of Mark Williams have left the fanbase with little to cheer for. The Hornets have been under machines all season long, too, going 19-31-1 on the total. The oddsmakers have begun to take notice, but they are still hesitant to give the Hornets the totals they deserve. These unders will keep cashing as long as their lengthy injury report continues to grow.
