NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 3/21/2024
Teams are sitting at or around 70 games played as we near the end of the season. The wild card races are heating up, with Tampa Bay and Detroit claiming the final two spots in the Eastern Conference, while Nashville and Vegas have the wild card spots claimed in the Western Conference. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, time is running out to do what the numbers tell you. So, without further ado let’s get into the game totals.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Calgary 8-1-1
Goalie Jacob Markstrom has been injured since May 9, and that is a big reason for the frequent overs. Since Markstrom’s injury, the over is 4-1. The Flames are incredibly inconsistent, with the offense showing up one night and then the goaltending stumbles the next. Over the last 10 games, the Flames have allowed 3.8 GA/G, and their next game is in Vancouver, so expect this streak to continue into next week, especially if Markstrom is not ready to go. Overall, Calgary has hit the over in 39 of their 68 games.
Winnipeg Jets 7-3
The Jets are back to their dominating ways. They are currently riding a three-game winning streak and have scored 16 goals over the last nine periods. The offense has been firing on all cylinders since the beginning of March, as they have averaged 3.7 GF/G. Meanwhile, Vezina favorite Connor Hellebuyck had struggled earlier in the month, which has contributed to the overs as well. Within this 10-game streak, Hellebuyck has started seven games, and the over is 5-2 and through his first five starts he had allowed over three goals per game. Overall, Winnipeg has only hit the over 26 times this season, which ranks 30th in the NHL. Hellebuyck’s struggles would have to continue for the streak to continue, and that doesn’t seem likely.
Tampa Bay Lightning 7-3
The Lightning have been on a scorcher lately as they have gone 7-2-1 over the last 10 games, including four consecutive wins. The offense has been stellar and has averaged 4.2 GF/G over this stretch of games, and now the Lightning find themselves in the top five in the league in scoring. Overall, the Lightning have not been a reliable choice in regard to the game total, as they have hit the over in just half of their games this season.
Vegas Golden Knights 7-3
Vegas has been out of sorts lately and has been limping since the middle of February. The over is 11-5 over the last 16 games for this club, and the high scoring games have not been kind to the Golden Knights. They have just 11 points in the last 16 games and are now being chased by the Minnesota Wild for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference. Adin Hill has struggled since returning from his injury and has allowed 4.0 GA/G over eight starts during this stretch. Overall, Vegas has hit the over in just 33 of their 68 games this season. And since the start of February, the over has hit in 12 of 20 games.
Under
Edmonton Oilers 2-8
The Oilers have plenty of offensive weapons. However, since the coaching change, the scheme seems to have changed as well and now the Oilers like low-scoring games. The netminding has seen tremendous improvement over the course of the campaign. And over the last 10, Edmonton has allowed just 1.9 GA/G. The road under has been frequent for Edmonton as well, having hit in five consecutive games away from home. Overall, Edmonton ranks eighth in the NHL in under game totals.
Los Angeles Kings 2-8
It is no surprise to see the Kings featured on this list once again. Over the last 10 games, the Kings have three shutouts and have held opponents to just 2.2 GA/G. Cam Talbot has been a huge correlating factor to the Kings seeing the south side of the game total. The Kings have hit the under in 29 of Talbot’s 42 starts this season, and Talbot alone would be tied with or rank ahead of 10 NHL clubs in regard to the under. Overall, the Kings are tied for the league lead with 41 under game totals.
Vancouver Canucks 2-7-1
Despite having one of the league’s best goalie tandems, the Canucks have hit the over far more than the under. However, the offense has gotten cold over the last 10 games. Since February 24, the Canucks have averaged just 2.6 GF/G, which is significantly lower than their 3.49 GF/G average. Before getting hurt, Thatcher Demko had been overwhelming the opposition, allowing just two goals in three games. Overall, Vancouver is far more likely to hit the over. And now with Demko’s injury, the over may be a safer pick with Casey DeSmith getting more time in the crease.
