NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 2/29/2024
Teams have just over 20 games remaining on the year as we near the home stretch. The trade deadline is just over a week away, and some teams have already made some big time moves. Last night the Dallas Stars added veteran blueliner Chris Tanev in a trade with Calgary for a 2024 second-round pick and a prospect. There are plenty of other big names floating around at this time, such as Nashville goalie Juuse Saros, Pittsburgh forward Jake Guentzel, and Calgary defenseman Noah Hanifin. The playoff picture is starting to take shape, but there is still plenty of regular season hockey left. So, let’s see which teams have been on either side of the game totals.

Over
Toronto Maple Leafs 8-2
The Maple Leafs have hit the overs a lot lately thanks to their offense finally living up to their potential. Across the last 10 games, the Leafs are 6-2 in their eight overs while going 2-0 in the under-game total games. In the two games that hit the under, Toronto scored four goals in each game, and both games came against the Blues, who rank 25th in GF/G. Though they lost in their last game, Toronto was riding a seven game win streak in which the offense averaged an insane 5.43 GF/G. And over the entire 10 game period they have averaged 4.8 GF/G. Toronto now leads the league in offense, as they are averaging 3.66 GF/G, which is easy to do when you have the league’s leading goal scorer on your team in Auston Matthews with his teammate William Nylander ranking just outside the top 10, with 31 goals. Toronto is one of six teams in the NHL with multiple 30 goal scorers to this point. Overall, Toronto has hit the over in 32 of their 58 games, which ranks as the 6th highest mark in the NHL.
Arizona Coyotes 6-2-2
Things have gotten really ugly for the team in the desert, as they have lost their last 13 games, with their last win coming on January 22nd. However, in the last 10, they have been making money on the north side of the game total largely in part to their horrific goaltending. If you want the over in a Coyotes game, you have to depend on a poor showing from the netminders and a good offensive opponent. That’s because, despite hitting the over in 60% of their last 10, the offense is averaging a mere 2.2 GF/G. On the flip side, their trio of subpar goalies are allowing 4.5 GA/G. Three of the next five opponents for Arizona have subpar offenses, so this trend may slow a little. Starting netminder Connor Ingram has allowed 4.0 GA/G in seven starts over the 13-game losing streak, with Karel Vejmelka allowing 5.2 GA/G in his five starts and Matt Villalta allowing six goals in his lone start over the stretch. Overall, Arizona has hit the over 31 times in their 58 games this season.
Vegas Golden Knights 4-1
Over their last five games, the Golden Knights have hit the over four times, with the four overs coming in consecutive games. Their netminding has gone cold over the 10 days, as the Knights have allowed 18 goals in their last four games, which is out of the norm for both Adin Hill and Logan Thompson. The offense has gotten going a bit over their last five games, as they have scored 19 goals and are coming off a big six goal effort against Toronto. Right Wing Jonathan Marchessault is on absolute tear, as he has tallied seven points (4/3) in the last three games. Center William Karlsson is also on fire riding a five-game point streak. Overall, the Knights have seen the overs hit in just 27 of their 59 games this season.
Under
Buffalo Sabres 2-8
Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen may be one of the most underrated, underappreciated, and overlooked names in the National Hockey League. The 24-year-old Fin has shot up the goalie rankings thanks to his solid play in the new calendar year. Over his last 10 starts, he has allowed just 21 goals and a shutout against the Kings. His four shutouts rank fourth best in the NHL, while he currently ranks in the top 10 in GA/G and SV%. Parlay the awesome goaltending with an offense that has performed well below their expectations, and you get a lot of low-scoring games. Taking away their 7-0 victory over the Kings, the Sabres have averaged just 18 goals in the other nine games. Overall, the Sabres have been a solid pick for the south side of the game total, as they have hit the under in 34 of their 59 games, which is tied for second most in the NHL.
Dallas Stars 0-5
Dallas has gone ice cold over the last two weeks, posting a 1-3-3 record in their last seven games. A big reason for that is their offense has seemingly disappeared. Once league leaders in GF/G, the Stars have posted just seven goals in their last five games. To make matters worse, All-Star netminder Jake Oettinger has also struggled lately as he has allowed four or more goals in four of his last five starts. The addition of Chris Tanev should pay off rather quickly, as he and Miro Heiskanen will form a formidable duo and should allow for Heiskanen to produce more offensively. This cold streak is not indicative of the Stars performance this season, as they still recorded the second most overs this season and have only hit the under-game total just 25 times.
New York Rangers 0-5
The Rangers’ reason for the frequent under game totals is much more positive than for the Stars. The Rangers have won 11 of their last 12 games, and the under has hit eight times in that span. Over the last five games, their goalie, Igor Shesterkin, has been elite, allowing just four goals in his last four starts. Three of those games were against playoff-caliber teams in Dallas, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Despite the low scoring games, the offense hasn’t been terrible, as they have averaged 3.2 GF/G over the last five games. Overall, the Rangers have not been a fun team to bet on in regard to the game total, as they have hit either side 28 times with four pushes.
