NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 11/13/2024
This week it’s time to see where teams are falling on either side of the game total. As we near the quarter mark of the season, teams have provided us with enough of a sample size to start following along on some established trends. There is a three-way tie for the league lead in overs with Vegas, Florida, and Colorado all having 11, while Toronto and Calgary lead the way having seen the south side of the game total in 10 of their games. Let’s take a look at how it has played out over the last 10 games.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Vegas Golden Knights 8-2
While they are just 2-3 overall in their last five games, the Golden Knights have been participating in some high scoring games. Over the last 10 games, the over has hit eight times. During the first four games, during this stretch, the Golden Knights were averaging 6.0 GF/G and the over hit in three of those four contests. Since then, the over is 5-1, but the reasoning has flipped. While Vegas has averaged 4.0 GF/G over this 10-game period, during the last six games they have allowed 20 goals, resulting in high scoring affairs. Vegas ranks fourth in the NHL with 4.20 GF/G and their 32.5% PP% is third best. On the other hand, they are below league average in goals allowed and PK%, which is a great recipe for some overs. Overall, the Golden Knights have hit the over in 11 of their 15 games this season.
New York Islanders 7-2-1
We don’t usually associate high scoring games with the New York Islanders, but they have hit the over in seven of their last 10 games. Over the last 10 games, the Islanders are allowing 3.5 GA/G while they are averaging 2.8 GF/G. So how do we get a lot of overs from this? Four of the last 10 games required overtime or a shootout and all games totaled seven goals and resulted in overs, two of them were blowout losses from the Panthers and Senators, while one was a 4-3 win against Buffalo. The Isles have seen the over hit in five of their last six games. The Islanders are about to embark on a four-game road trip, and they have seen the north side of the game total in five of their nine road games this season. Overall, the Islanders have seen the over hit in 10 of their 16 games and their 10 overs are tied for the second most in the league.
Columbus Blue Jackets 7-3
Similarly to the Islanders, the Blue Jackets have seen the over hit a lot this season, but that typically carries a negative association. While they started the season 5-3-1 overall, they are currently on a six-game losing streak and have picked up just one point in November. Over the last six games the Blue Jackets have allowed 4.83 GA/G while they have averaged just 1.83 GF/G, but the over has hit in four of these games. Columbus ranks 29th in the NHL in GA/G as they are allowing 3.60 GA/G and have an abysmal .882 SV%. Their offense is averaging 3.07 GF/G and has scored more than three goals four times this season, including two times in this 10-game stretch. Overall, the Blue Jackets have hit the over in 10 of their 15 games this season.
Under
Calgary Flames 2-7-1
After a scorching start to the season, the Flames have really cooled off over the last two weeks. They started the season 5-0-1 and have since gone 3-6-2 and their offense has failed to score more than three goals in a game since October 22nd. Over their last 10 games, they have averaged just 2.1 GF/G after averaging 3.71 GF/G in their first seven games to open the season. Dan Vladar and Dustin Wolf have been turning heads with their performance in the net as the two have combined to allow just 2.94 GA/G which is the 11th best mark in the league. However, their offense has been hard to find lately, and Calgary has just two players on their roster that have reached the double-digit point mark at this point in the season. Overall, the Flames have seen the under hit in 10 of their 17 games this season.
Anaheim Ducks 2-7-1
Speaking of lacking offense, the Ducks have scored more than three goals in just two of their 14 games this season, so it is no surprise to see the under hitting in their games. Over their last 10 games the Ducks have averaged just 2.0 GF/G. Troy Terry is the only Anaheim player to have eclipsed the 10-point mark on the season as he has 11. Terry and Leo Carlsson are the only two big time goal scorers on this team as they are the only players to record more than three goals this season. On the flip side, Lukas Dostal is killing it this season. Though he only has a 4-5-2 record overall, he is allowing just 2.73 GA/G and has a solid .922 SV%, which ranks 6th in the league. The under has hit in eight of Dostal’s 11 games played this season. Overall, the under has hit in nine of their 14 games this season.
Toronto Maple Leafs 2-6-2
Over the last 10 games, the Maple Leafs have seen the under hit six times. They lack consistency on offense and when you pair that with their tremendous goalie room, you get a lot of low scoring games. They are scoring just 2.94 GF/G which ranks in the lower half of the league, but the offensive potential has flashed multiple times this season with Toronto scoring four or more goals in eight of their 17 games. Unfortunately for them, their off nights are typically really bad. The backbone of this team is their goaltending as Anthony Stolarz has not missed a beat since leaving Florida and taking on a heavier workload. He has allowed 2.11 GA/G this season which ranks fourth in the NHL and his backup Joseph Woll has been elite as well allowing just 2.27 GA/G in his four appearances. Overall, the Maple Leafs have seen the south side of the game total in 10 of their 17 games this season and are tied with the Flames for the most in the league.
