NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 10/30/2024
After reviewing some hot and cold streaks last week, let’s take a look at where the money is being made in regard to the game totals. As of now, Vegas leads the league in scoring, averaging an elite 4.70 GF/G, with Mark Stone leading the NHL in points (18) and Jack Eichel (16) joining him in the Top 5. As far as goaltending goes, the Dallas Stars lead the league, allowing just 1.89 GA/G and are the only team to allow less than 2 GA/G. The Oilers cold start continues to be highlighted as they are in the basement in regard to their scoring, while the Avs poor goaltending has put them in the Top 3 of the league in overs. Let’s take a look at what teams have found themselves on either side of the game total.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Florida Panthers 7-3
The Panthers have seen the over hit more often than not to start the season. They are averaging 3.45 GF/G this season, and their PP% of 24.1% is ranked eighth in the league. One thing to note is that the over is a huge correlation with whether or not the Panthers win or not. The Panthers have lost all three games in which the under hit, whereas they are 6-1in the games the over has hit and are averaging 4 GF/G in the overs. Their goaltending is off to a slower start compared to their performance last year, as they are allowing 3.18 GA/G this season. Sergei Bobrovsky has allowed 2.97 GA/G this season, while his backup, Spencer Knight, has allowed 3.03 GA/G. The over has hit in all four of Knight’s appearances this season. Overall, the over has hit in 8 of the Panthers 11 games this season. Their next two games are against the Dallas Stars, who have allowed just 1.89 GA/G this season.
Colorado Avalanche 7-3
Unlike the Panthers, the frequent Avalanche overs are more of a negative than a positive. It is true they have one of the best offenses in the NHL. Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Casey Mittelstadt all rank inside the Top 15 in the league in points, and the Avs are averaging 3.60 GF/G. However, due to Alexandar Georgiev incredible struggles, they are allowing 4.10 GA/G. The over has hit in all five of the games Georgiev has been in net, as the 28-year-old netminder showcases a lowly SV% of just .822 and is allowing 4.62 GA/G. The average score total in Colorado games this season is 7.7 goals per game. And until their netminding situation is figured out, you are crazy to not take the over.
Montreal Canadiens 7-3
The Canadiens round out the list with the most frequent overs at a 70% rate. They have limped through their first 10 games of the season and are 4-5-1 at this point. Montreal has struggled offensively this season and is averaging just 2.90 GF/G, and they have been limited to two goals or less in four games so far. Despite their offensive struggles, the over has been hitting in large part because of their poor netminding. Both Sam Montembeault and Cayden Primeau have struggled to begin the season, with Montembeault allowing 3.67 GA/G and Primeau allowing 4.02 GA/G, and the two have combined for a poor .882 SV%. The over is 3-0 in all of Primeau’s starts this season and is 5-0 in all the games he has appeared in.
Under
Anaheim Ducks 3-6
The Ducks have seen the south side of the game total in six of their first nine games this season. It is no surprise that the Ducks are near the bottom of the league in scoring, as they are averaging just 2.33 GA/G, and they have a league worst 6.9% PP%. Their depth has already been an issue, as Troy Terry, Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish, and Ryan Strome have accounted for 46% of the offensive production for the Ducks. Another key reason for the low scoring games is how dominant Lukas Dostal has been this season. He is allowing just 2 GA/G and has a .943 SV%. The under has hit in five of the seven games that Dostal has played in this season. They have Pittsburgh and Chicago on deck, with both teams averaging 3 GF/G or less, making the under a favorable pick over their next two contests.
Edmonton Oilers 3-6-1
What is surprising to note is that the only team that has scored less than the Ducks is the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers have missed their offensive production from last season, as they are averaging just 2.20 GF/G this season. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (four points), Zach Hyman (no goals), Viktor Arvidsson (three points, no goals), and Jeff Skinner (four points) have all struggled to get going offensively this season and has really held the team back, especially when Connor McDavid is off the ice. Calvin Pickard has done well, and has contributed to the south side of the game total, as he is allowing just 2.91 GA/G this season. Now McDavid is out for two to three weeks with an injury, putting even more pressure on the aforementioned skaters who have yet to produce.
Los Angeles Kings 3-6-1
The under has hit in five of the Kings last six games, as goalie David Rittich has put together some solid showings while the offense continues to be average. The Kings rank 28th in the NHL in PP%, as they are cashing in on just 13.2% of their man advantage opportunities. They play Vegas in their next game, and the Knights lead the league in scoring, but then has two consecutive contests against teams ranking in the bottom third of the league in scoring (NSH & CHI). However, the forecast of continued low scoring games is a bit unclear, as both Rittch and Darcy Kuemper have SV%’s of .897 or less.
