NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 1/25/2024
As we near the All-Star break, let’s take a look at who is hitting either side of the game total most frequently, and where you should be placing your bets. First a few notes around the league: The Flyers have lost G Carter Hart to “personal leave,” which is a big blow to their Cinderella season as they hope to hang on to the last guaranteed spot in the Metro Division. Additionally, Edmonton still hasn’t lost and have now won 14 games in a row and have officially overtaken Los Angeles for a Top 3 spot in the Pacific Division. Finally, it may be worth taking a long look at a surging St. Louis Blues team that is now just a win away from sitting in the 2nd wild card spot in the Western Conference. Now to the money…

Over
Colorado Avalanche 9-1
This team is on fire right now, winning 10 of their last 13 contests with plenty of goals. The Avalanche now lead the NHL in GF/G as they average 3.81 per game. The over has hit in 10 of their last 11 games, and the only under was a 3-0 shutout win over Vegas. It is easy to hit the over when you have the league leader in points in Nathan MacKinnon. He has tallied 24 points in 11 games this month and is coming off a four goal, five-point performance against Washington. It also helps that Colorado has two more guys with more than 20 goals, Mikko Rantanen and Valeri Nichushkin, and five others with over double-digit goal tallies this season. During this current 10-game stretch, the Avalanche are averaging 4.6 GF/G. Overall, Colorado is tied for the league lead with the most overs hit, 29 in 48 games.
Minnesota Wild 7-2-1
Minnesota can thank both their streaky offense and bad goaltending for their frequent overs over the last 10 contests. They have gone 5-5 amid the stretch and have been shut out twice but also have shut out their opponent once (the three non over marks). In the five games they won, the offense has averaged 5 GF/G, while in their losses they notched only 1.6 GF/G. On the other hand, including the shutout win, the Wild netminders have allowed 3.6 GA/G. The netminders’ numbers have improved a bit throughout the campaign, as they once were basement dwellers. However, if the last collection of games is any indication, they still allow a lot of goals. Overall, Minnesota has hit the over in 25 of their 47 games, the 7th most in the NHL.
Vancouver Canucks 7-3
It is no surprise to see this team on the list again, with the over hitting in seven of their last 10 games. The over almost always correlates to a Canucks win, with the team winning eight times over this stretch. This offense has been incredible all season and ranks 2nd in the NHL in GF/G with 3.77 and are 8th in PP%. Though the otherworldly start for their core four has simmered, the Canucks have three players ranking in the Top 15 in the NHL in points. The Canucks goaltending has been elite all season, ranking 2nd in GA/G, but Vancouver is still tied for the league lead in overs. The offense has averaged 3.6 GF/G over this stretch, while the netminding has allowed 2.5 GA/G and yet the over has hit seven times. Overall, the Canucks have seen the over hit in 29 of 48 games.
Under
Winnipeg Jets 1-8-1
Winnipeg leads the NHL in GA/G, allowing just 2.26 per game and an elite .925 SV%. They have allowed just 15 goals in their last 10 games. This Jets team is the perfect play for the under. Their offense is average and is only notching 3.17 GF/G. And mixing that with elite goaltending from the likes of future Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck, there just aren’t a lot of goals scored in these games. One negative contributor to the low-scoring, merely average offense, is their lowly 16.1% PP%. The Jets next four opponents are Toronto, Pittsburgh x2, and Philadelphia. And with the Flyers and Penguins averaging less than 3 GF/G, and Hellebuyck in the net against Toronto, we should see the under be a nice play over the next week of play. Overall, the Jets rank 8th in the NHL, with the under hitting in 25 of their 46 games.
Edmonton Oilers 2-8
The win streak can’t be attributed to the normal high flying offensive profile the Oilers have established for themselves in recent memory. It has everything to do with their elite level netminding by Stuart Skinner. Skinner, along with Calvin Pickard, have allowed just 1.5 GA/G over the last 10 games and only 1.64 GA/G over the course of the win streak. The Oilers offense is good, but it isn’t 4.6 GF/G good to get to the northside of most game totals. Edmonton has averaged 3.7 GF/G over the last 10, which is more than Minnesota and Vancouver. However, thanks to the likes of Skinner and Pickard, the south side of the game total has been the play. Overall, the under has hit in 22 of the Oilers 43 games.
Vegas Golden Knights 2-7-1
To round out the unintentional Western Conference article, the Golden Knights round out the frequent under list, with the under hitting in seven of their last 10 games. Vegas has a similar makeup to the Jets; they are averaging just 3.17 GF/G and rank 6th in the NHL allowing just 2.71 GA/G. The offense has managed to score just 2.8 GF/G over the last 10 contests, while the goaltending has allowed just 2.5 GA/G; the perfect recipe for those of you who like to take the under game totals. The Golden Knights are tied for the second most under game totals in the league, one behind the Panthers, with the under hitting in 27 of their 48 games.
