NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 1/10/2024
As we near the midway point of the NHL season, let’s take another look at either side of the Game Total and see who has been making the most money. So far, the most profitable teams on either side of the game total have been the New Jersey Devils (Over) and the St. Louis Blues (Under). Let’s see over the last 10 games if either of those teams are on the list.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
New York Rangers- 8-1-1
The Rangers have seen a lot of goals scored in their last 10 games, as the over has hit eight times. However, in those eight games, the Rangers are 3-5 and have given up 3.89 GA/G. The offense wasn’t the reason, rather a hiccup in their goaltending from Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick. The Rangers lead the league in PP% as they cash in on 30% of their man advantages and they do rank 10th in GF/G, but this goalie tandem is much better than 3.89 GA/G. Once Quick and Shesterkin get going again, the over won’t be as frequent. Overall, the Rangers have hit the over in only 20 of their 39 games so far this season.
Detroit Red Wings- 8-2
Seeing Detroit on this list is no surprise. When the offense ranks in the Top 5 in GF/G (3.55) and the goaltending ranks 25th in GA/G (3.40), you are bound to see a lot of goals being scored. Detroit did a fine job bringing in Alex DeBrincat in the offseason, as he leads the team in points and goals. Midseason signee Patrick Kane has been a huge addition as well, as the fresh-hipped skater has 14 points in 16 games. Additionally, Lucas Raymond is on pace to set a career high in points as the Swede currently sits at 32 points on the year, one point behind captain Dylan Larkin. There are a lot of weapons on this team. Overall, the Red Wings are tied for first in the league with the most overs. The over has hit in 25 of their 40 games this season. The 62.5% Over% ranks 3rd in the NHL behind the New Jersey Devils and Dallas Stars.
Montreal Canadiens- 8-2
This is odd to see the Canadiens see a lot of overs as they have one of the lowest scoring offenses in the NHL. The goaltending is one of the worst as well, as they allow 3.44 GA/G. However, even when you break it down, starting goalie Sam Montembeault allows less than 3 GA/G, well below the team’s average, which should correlate to less overs. Especially when the offense is averaging only 2.74 GA/G (28th in NHL). The numbers are telling me this stretch of overs is an outlier. Overall, the Canadiens have seen the over hit in 21 of their 39 games. However, before this streak, the over only hit 13 times in 29 games.
Vancouver Canucks- 8-2
Despite all the expectations of this team to fall back to Earth, it hasn’t happened yet, and the Canucks are a wagon. They lead the league in GF/G and have three players ranking in the Top 10 in points and four in the Top 20 in the league. In the last 10 games, the Canucks have scored five or more goals six times. Overall, the Canucks are a part of the aforementioned four-way tie for the most overs in the NHL, with the north side of the game total hitting in 25 of their 41 games this season. Hard not to when you lead the league in GF/G.
Under
Seattle Kraken 3-7
Seattle has been one of the hottest teams on the ice right now, as they have won nine of their last 11 games. The goaltending has been a huge factor in the club’s attempt to turn the season around. Joey Daccord has allowed 1.67 GA/G in his nine starts over the last 10 games, while backup goalie Chris Driedger allowed just one goal in his lone appearance. The offense ranks 27th in GF/G as they average a mere 2.75 GF/G, and their performance on the power play has been average. If Daccord continues to dominate, the Kraken will hit the under a lot going forward. Overall, the Kraken have seen the under hit in 21 of their 40 games this season.
Florida Panthers 2-7-1
Another team on an absolute tear, the Panthers have won their last eight games and have won 12 of their last 16. Similarly, to the Kraken, the Panthers thrive in low-scoring games, and this is why we see a strong correlation in their Win% and Under%. Florida ranks third in the NHL in GA/G, as they allow just 2.48 goals, while also ranking 5th in PK%, as they are neutralizing 84.4% of their opponent’s man advantage attempts. This club is one of the best in the Eastern Conference. And as they continue to win, expect the under to keep hitting as well. Overall, the Panthers have seen the under hit in 24 of their 40 games this season, which is tied for most in the league with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Honorable Mention: Saint Louis Blues 0-4-1
The other two teams on this list can credit the under to their dominant goaltending, but the Blues cannot. Their offense is just that bad. The Blues have averaged 1.6 GF/G in their last five contests. Overall, the Blues have seen the under hit in 23 of their 39 games this season, which ranks third most in the NHL behind Florida and Philadelphia.
