Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 12/24/2024
As we head into the brief holiday break, let’s take a look at where the money is being made on the season. Tampa Bay has come out of nowhere and has been a cover darling over the last 10 games, while Vegas continues to cover night in and night out. The Stars, Rangers, Sabres, and Sharks have all struggled of late, but the Senators and Oilers have inserted themselves into the playoff picture. Without further ado, let’s see who are the hottest and coldest teams in the NHL over the last 10 games.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
Tampa Bay Lightning 8-2
After struggling through the month of November, the Tampa Bay Lightning have figured things out in December and have found themselves right back in the mix in the Atlantic Division race. After posting a 5-6-2 record in November, the Lightning have gone 7-2 in December and carry a +23-goal differential. The Lightning have also been covering the spread like crazy over this stretch. The only two games they failed to cover came against Florida and Toronto, both top teams in the league. The offense has been on fire lately, averaging 4.3 GF/G over their last 10 games, which has pushed them atop the league in scoring. Their goaltending has also been stout, allowing just 2.2 GA/G and Jonas Johansson deserves a big nod for that number. Yes, Andrei Vasilevskiy gets the bulk of the starts, but Johansson has dominated when his number is called. Johansson has allowed just three goals over his last three starts. Overall, the Lightning are just 17-15 ATS this season.
Vegas Golden Knights 8-2
The Golden Knights might be the hottest team in the NHL right now. Their 49 points is tied for the second most in the league and their +24-goal differential is the second best in the Western Conference. Vegas has gone 8-1 in the month of December and are currently riding the momentum of a four-game winning streak. However, their offense has actually struggled over the last 10 games as they are averaging less than 3.0 GF/G. It has been their goaltending that has been dominant. Adin Hill and Ilya Samsonov have combined to allow just 2.3 GA/G. Samsonov has allowed just five goals over his last three starts while Hill has a 9-2-1 record over his last 12 starts. The Golden Knights have been covering machines on the road as of late as well, covering six of their last eight road games. Vegas has covered the spread in 22 of their 34 games this season which is tied for the third best mark in the league behind only the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks.
Cold
Dallas Stars 2-8
Unlike Tampa Bay and Vegas, the Dallas Stars have struggled in the month of December as they have gone just 6-5 overall but have covered in just two of their last eight games. The offense has been inconsistent during this stretch as they are averaging just 2.5 GF/G which is way down from their 3.15 GF/G season average. The big names in Dallas have been almost nonexistent on offense this season with Jason Robertson, Miro Heiskanen, and Wyatt Johnston all combining for just 17 goals at this point in the season. Matt Duchene is the team leader in points (30) with Mason Marchment (27) right behind him. If it wasn’t for these two, the Stars would have one of the worst offenses in the league and their roster hasn’t really changed from last season. In addition to their stars not producing, they have one of the worst PP%’s in the league as they are cashing in on just 15.9% of their man advantage opportunities this season which ranks 26th in the league. Dallas needs to find their offense and give their goalies some help. Overall, Dallas is just 14-19 ATS this season.
New York Rangers 2-8
To no one’s surprise, the New York Rangers struggles have continued, and they are tied with Dallas as the worst team ATS, over the last 10 games. The Rangers have gone just 4-13 over their last 17 games and now find themselves tied for last place in the Metro Division standings. The offense hasn’t bailed out Igor Shesterkin and neither has his backup Jonathan Quick. Quick has allowed 24 goals over his last five starts and the Rangers have a 1-4 record when he is in the crease. As for the offensive production with Shesterkin in the net, the Rangers have tallied a mere 20 goals over his last 12 starts. You think Rangers fans are frustrated? Shesterkin might be the most frustrated guy in hockey. Chris Kreider was a healthy scratch, and the culture problems keep coming to light. This is going to be a disastrous season for the Rangers. Overall, the Rangers have covered in just 32.4% of their games this season, the worst mark in the NHL.
Money Line
Hot
Ottawa Senators 8-2
It only took about 20 games, but the Senators have finally woken up and are one of the hottest teams in hockey right now. The Senators have won eight of their last 10 games and have picked up points in 11 of their last 13 games. Linus Ullmark has been incredible for the Senators as their new goaltender has allowed just seven goals over his last seven starts and has two shutouts over that span. Ullmark is now ranked seventh in the league in GA/G on the season allowing just 2.38 GA/G. Ottawa is in the midst of a nine-game road trip and has started the trip with a 3-1 record despite being just 8-8-1 in road games this season. If they can add another offensive piece, the Senators will make the playoffs.
Edmonton Oilers 8-2
The Oilers are gaining ground on the Golden Knights in the Pacific Division standings thanks to their current hot streak. The Oilers have won 15 of their last 20 games and have recorded a point in 16 of their last 20 games. The offense has finally returned to normal as Edmonton is averaging 3.9 GF/G over their last 10 games. In addition to their high-flying offense, Stuart Skinner has been incredible in the net lately as he has allowed just 2.29 GA/G over his last seven starts. Leon Draisaitl deserves a nod as well, as he is second in the league in points (52) and is the current league leader in goals (24). Edmonton now sits in second place in the Pacific Division as they trail Vegas by just five points.
Cold
Buffalo Sabres 1-7-2
We know how bad the Rangers have been with all their internal issues, we have heard of some internal issues with Vancouver, and have witnessed the utter disappointment in Nashville, but the Buffalo Sabres have quietly been a disaster this season. The Sabres are fresh off a 13-game losing streak that has them in the basement of the Atlantic Division and their 28 points are the second worst in the league. Nothing has gone right for Buffalo over the last month with the offense averaging just 2.5 GF/G since November 27th. However, their goaltending has been atrocious as well. Over their losing streak, the Sabres allowed an average of 4.13 GA/G which has been the worst in the NHL during that span. Buffalo is set to sell at the deadline after losing their handle on the season.
San Jose Sharks 2-7-1
It’s bad that we highlight all the negatives surrounding the Rangers, Canucks, Sabres, Predators and others, but the Sharks have been worse than all of them. It is just what we have come to expect from the Sharks as they are in last place of the Pacific Division and are just two points ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks (26 points) who are the worst team in the NHL as of now. San Jose has lost their last five games and eight of their last nine games. After some in-season trades, their goalie tandem is the worst in the league and once the trade deadline nears, the Sharks will ship off any offensively contributing veteran. The Sharks are getting there, but they still have another year or so to go.
