Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 11/6/2024
As we round out the first month of the NHL season, we have some great storylines and trends to follow. Winnipeg is looking like one of the most complete teams in recent memory, while Carolina is riding an eight-game winning streak. The Sharks have exited the basement in the Western Conference, as the Nashville Predators have moved into last place in the conference and are tied with the Philadelphia Flyers with nine points and the two are the only teams in the league to not reach double-digit points at this point in the season. With many more trends to follow, let’s see where the money is being made around the league.

ATS
Hot
Carolina Hurricanes 8-2
There is no hotter team in the league right now than the Carolina Hurricanes. They have been absolutely dominant over their last ten games, picking up points in nine of them, with the lone loss being a one goal road defeat. They have covered eight of their last 10 contests thanks to their high-flying offense. They have scored at least three goals in each of their last 10, averaging 4.4 GF/G. While the offense deserves the credit, their goaltending has done well as they are allowing just 2.3 GA/G. It is worth noting that this stretch has been against other high-profile teams like the Boston Bruins, Edmonton Oilers, and Washington Capitals. Martin Necas has been on an absolute teat to start the season as he leads the team in points (20), goals (seven), and assists (13). He also has a 26.9% S% which ranks ninth in the league amongst players with 20 or more shot attempts this season. Frederik Andersen has also had an incredible start to his season allowing just 1.49 GA/G across his four appearances. Overall, the Hurricanes are 8-3 ATS this season and their eight covers is tied for the second most in the NHL. Their next two games are against Pittsburgh and Colorado, who are a combined 9-18 ATS this season.
Washington Capitals 8-2
Washington is right there with the Hurricanes as they have covered eight of their last contests. The two games they failed to cover were both on the road as they fell to Carolina 4-2 and were shutout by the Lightning. The Capitals are reaping the reward of offense, something they were not seeing last season. They have averaged 4.18 GF/G this season which is the third most in the league. Alex Ovechkin is off to a much better start than that of last year as he has tallied seven goals this season which is tied for the team lead with Connor McMichael. Dylan Strome leads the team with 17 points and the Caps have six players who have scored four or more goals this season. Their netminding hasn’t been great, but it has been doing enough to allow for the offense to win these games. Overall, the Capitals are 8-3 ATS this season which is tied for the second most covers in the league. Their next two games are home contests against Pittsburgh and Nashville who are a combined 10-16 ATS this season.
Cold
Philadelphia Flyers 2-8
The Flyers have had a rough start to the season as they are just 4-8-1 overall and have failed to cover in eight of their last 10 games. They have scored just 26 goals over this 10-game stretch and have been shutout twice. Their fans are missing Carter Hart in the net as their goaltending room is much worse without him as they have allowed 3.85 GA/G this season which is the third most in the league. The only positive for this Flyers team is the performance of rookie Matvei Michkov who, at times, has given this team some life. Michkov is second on the team with 10 points and four goals. Travis Konecny is the team leader in goals (seven), assists (seven), and points (14). Netminder Samuel Ersson has done well, allowing 2.68 GA/G in his nine appearances, but his backups Ivan Fedotov and Aleksei Kolosov are a combined 0-6 and have allowed 4.64 GA/G on an abysmal .842 SV%. When it is Fedotov or Kolosov’s turn the Flyers are 0-6 ATS. Overall, the Flyers are 4-9 ATS.
New York Islanders 2-8
Once again, the Islanders have been mediocre. They are 5-6-2 overall, but have struggled mightily ATS, covering in just two of their last 10 games. Four of their five wins have been one-goal victories with three needing to go to overtime or longer. Losing Anthony Duclair to injury is a huge setback for the Islanders as he was their only significant offseason move, as they hoped to boost their offense. Unfortunately, it hasn’t panned out as the Isles rank 31st in the NHL averaging just 2.31 GF/G and 28th with a 13.6% PP%. Ilya Sorokin has been terrific this season allowing just 2.35 GA/G on a .921 SV%, but the team is just 3-5 ATS in his eight games. Overall, the Islanders are a league worst 3-10 ATS this season.
Moneyline
Hot
Carolina Hurricanes 9-1
As mentioned, the Hurricanes have won nine of their last 10 games and are currently riding an eight-game winning streak which is the longest active streak in the league. Aside from their upcoming road game against Vegas, their schedule is rather light over the next 10 days.
Winnipeg Jets 9-1
The Jets 6-4 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs is their lone loss this season. They are 12-1 overall and are currently riding a four-game winning streak. Over the course of their four-game winning streak, the Jets have scored 22 goals while allowing just eight. Their +32-goal differential is the best in the league, and they are the only team to remain undefeated on the road. Kyle Connor raising the ceiling of this Jets team, after they were limited due to his injury last season. Connor leads the team with 19 points and nine goals. Behind him are Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers are tied for second with 17 points each. However, it’s not just the top guys. The Jets roster has 10 players with double-digit points on the season, and seven players who have scored four or more goals. All this offense, paired with Connor Hellebuyck’s presence in the crease makes it no surprise to see the Jets atop the league standings.
Cold
Montreal Canadiens 2-6-2
After starting the season 2-1, the Canadiens are now just 4-7-2 on the season and have lost their last four games. The lack of offensive capabilities of this Canadiens team has already caught up to them. They have scored four or more goals in just three games this season (3-0 in those games) and they rank 23rd in the league as they average just 2.69 GA/G. Cole Caufield is responsible for over 28% of this teams goals this season and is joined by just Nick Suzuki (four) and Brendan Gallagher (five) are the only other Montreal players to tally more than two goals this season. It doesn’t help when you consider that the Canadiens are allowing 4 GA/G which ranks 31st in the league. Unfortunately for the Canadiens they are about to begin a four-game road trip with stops in New Jersey, Toronto, Buffalo, and Minnesota which means more losses on the horizon.
Utah Hockey Club 2-5-3
Similarly to the make-up of Montreal, Utah is struggling in all aspects. They rank 27th in the league in GA/G as they are allowing 3.46 GA/G while their offense has managed just 2.85 GF/G while ranking 20th with a 17.1% PP%. Clayton Keller is leading the team with 12 points and is tied with Dylan Guenther for the team lead with six goals. Keller and Guenther are joined by Barrett Hayton (five goals) as the only Utah players to record more than three goals this season. Connor Ingram has had a rough start to the year between the pipes as he is allowing 3.57 GA/G which ranks 49th in the NHL. Their next five games include two road games against St. Louis and Nashville before hosting Carolina, Vegas, and Washington.
