Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 10/22/2024
We are now entering the third full week of the NHL season, which means it is time to look at some trends happening around the league. There have been a lot of surprises so far this season, as the Winnipeg Jets remain as the only undefeated team in the league, while the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, and Edmonton Oilers have been embarrassing to watch so far. Some teams and players haven’t missed a beat, with the Dallas Stars going 5-1 to start the year, while Nikita Kucherov is leading the league with seven goals in five games. Fall is in full force, which means it’s money season. Let’s see where the money is being made on the ice so far this season.

ATS
Hot
Calgary Flames 5-0
It is a surprise to see the Flames off to a hot start as they are riding a five-game point streak while winning four of their first five games. Calgary currently ranks third in the league as they average 4 GF/G while cashing in on nearly 30% of their power play opportunities. Jonathan Huberdeau and Rasmus Andersson lead the team with six points each, while Andersson’s +6 +/- rating ranks inside the Top 10 in the league. The netminding has also been solid as Dan Vladar and Dustin Wolf have combined to allow just 2.4 GA/G through their first five contests. Let’s not overreact on the Flames; their only impressive showing was a road OT win against Vancouver to start the season. Since, they have won against Philadelphia, Chicago, and a struggling Edmonton team. However, they top the list this week and have three straight home games ahead, might be work riding the Flames till they wither.
Los Angeles Kings 5-1
The Kings have been darlings ATS so far this season despite having six straight away games to start the season, with a seventh one on deck. They forced overtime against Boston and Ottawa while taking care of business in Buffalo, Montreal, and Anaheim. Their lone poor performance came in Toronto, as the Leafs smacked them 6-2. Their special teams’ play is terrible, but the Kings keep finding ways to keep the game close. Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe have provided the offense for the Kings with the two combining for 14 points so far this season, while backup netminder David Rittich has been showing up Darcy Kuemper, allowing just 2.36 GA/G in his three appearances. Three of their next six games are against bottom of the barrel teams in San Jose and Chicago, while they have two home stands against Vegas and Utah. Look for the Kings to continue to cover over the next week thanks to some favorable matchups ahead.
Cold
Colorado Avalanche 1-5
Colorado’s lone cover came in their game as they beat the Sharks 4-1 in San Jose. Their previous five games were ugly, going 1-4 and needing to push the game to overtime to take down Anaheim to record that first win. The offense is doing great, averaging 3.5 GF/G. However, what is really failing the Avs is the awful goaltending they have gotten from Alexander Georgiev. Georgiev has already been pulled twice this season, against Vegas and Columbus, and has allowed 4.99 GA/G on a .811 SV%. Justus Annunen has done well as the backup, allowing just 2.7 GA/G, but it remains to be seen whether or not he can maintain this performance with an increased workload as he potentially usurps Georgiev as the starting goalie. The Avs have a relatively light schedule for the remainder of October, but a stretch that is incredibly important for their direction between the pipes.
Edmonton Oilers 1-5
It is already surprising enough to see the Avs struggling, but to also see the Oilers on this list is nearly unbelievable. Two of the best teams in the league off to two of the worst starts across the league. They are 2-4 overall with wins over Philadelphia and a struggling Nashville team. Their losses have come at the hands of Winnipeg, Dallas, Calgary, and Chicago with an average -3.8 goal differential. The offense has been virtually nonexistent, as the Oilers have tallied just 12 goals throughout their first six games. Connor McDavid has just one goal, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has not scored a goal, while Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson have yet to record a point. To make matters worse, Stuart Skinner might have returned to earth as he is allowing 4.03 GA/G. Their upcoming schedule includes games against Carolina, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Nashville. When will the offense get going?
Moneyline
Hot
Winnipeg Jets 5-0
After underwhelming expectations surrounding the Jets all offseason, they have stormed out of the gates as they have won their first five games and are the only team in the NHL to remain undefeated. The Jets season began with an impressive 6-0 shutout over the reigning Western Conference champs in the Edmonton Oilers. From there they defended their home ice over a four-game homestand, sweeping the competition and leaving Winnipeg with a +8-goal differential across those contests. Connor Hellebuyck is back to being Connor Hellebuyck as the netminder has allowed just five goals on 105 shot attempts this season. Mark Scheifele has been unstoppable as well as the center has five goals already and eight total points. However, competition should be considered. They beat a offensively absent Edmonton team while beating Chicago, Minnesota, San Jose, and Pittsburgh at home. The Jets have five of their next six games on the road with the lone home contest coming against the Toronto Maple Leafs. We will see just how long they maintain this hot streak.
Dallas Stars 5-1
We have finally come upon a team that has been performing in line with their expectations. The Dallas Stars have dominated the opposition this season and have recorded two shutouts already. Their lone loss was a road game against Washington. Jake Oettinger has yet to be beaten this season, going 4-0 and allowing just 1.48 GA/G on a .953 SV%. His backup, Casey DeSmith, has been just a dominant as he showcases a .941 SV% in his two appearances. Beside the dominant goaltending, Logan Stankoven’s performance this season has been another shining part of this team. Stankoven leads all rookies in points this season with seven and carries a team best +4 +/- rating. The offense needs to get going, but if Oettinger can keep up this play consistently, the Dallas Stars will win the Stanley Cup.
Cold
Nashville Predators 0-5
After spending some big-time money to bring in some of the league’s top free agents, the Nashville Predators have laid an egg to start to the season… literally, they have no wins. They looked mildly competitive in their season opener against the Stars, but since then they have four straight multi-goal losses. Newbies Brady Skjei and Steven Stamkos have combined for just two points this season. Juuse Saros has not looked like himself in the crease as he has allowed 3.64 GA/G on a lowly .875 SV% in hist four starts. Their next game is against Boston, then they play Chicago and Columbus in back-to-back games over the weekend. The weekend set should allow Nashville to find some much-needed momentum to get things going this season. Yes, even the Avalanche are struggling, but if the Predators want to keep pace with Colorado and Dallas this season, they better find some offense and fast.
San Jose Sharks 0-4-2
It’s not a surprise to see the Sharks rounding out the list today. Last season they did not pick up a win until their 12th game of the season. This season they are through six and have yet to pick up that first win. Tyler Toffoli has had some early season success to start his Sharks tenure, but the lack of depth is already showing for San Jose. The Sharks have been terrible across the board, even the off-ice staff is messing up as they handed Vitek Vanecek a misspelled jersey to wear. The Sharks goaltending is terrible again this season, allowing over four goals per game this season a .880 SV%. Shark’s fans have been through a lot in recent years, and they took another punch to the gut as their future star Macklin Celebrini was injured after just one game this season and is expected to be out another few weeks.
