MLB Props Picks: Expert Handicapping for Friday 4/12/2024
It is a full slate of games in Major League Baseball on Friday night, and there are plenty of great props to choose from. The Yankees and Guardians are off to stellar starts on the young 2024 season, and there are a pair of NL and AL West divisional matchups that could have implications down the road. The Baltimore Orioles called up their No. 1 prospect in Jackson Holliday, and Ohtani is starting to do Ohtani things in LA. With less than average pitching matchups on Friday, we are going to fade pitching props and attack hitter’s props. Doc’s Sports will break down some of the best player props from the diamond below.
Doc’s Sports offers MLB expert picks for every game on our baseball predictions page.
Anthony Rizzo, New York Yankees, OVER 1.5 total bases (+115)
The New York Yankees will go to battle against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night and I do not think anyone expected both teams to get off to blistering starts. The Yankees head into the matchup at 10-3 and the Guardians are a solid 9-3. For our first selection, we will target Anthony Rizzo and his total bases. Carlos Carrasco will toe the rubber for Cleveland and he has a 4.50 ERA through two starts. I like the lefty vs. right-hander matchup as Rizzo is hitting .600 against Carrasco in his career. Rizzo also has a homer against him and a 2.178 OPS. This play is well worth it at plus money in return.
Jose Altuve, Houston Astros, OVER 1.5 total bases (+135)
One of my favorite plays tonight will be Altuve’s total bases in a divisional matchup against the Texas Rangers. Altuve is off to a stellar start to the 2024 campaign hitting .370 with three home runs and three RBIs. He has 54 at bats on the young season and an OPS of 1.100. Dane Dunning will be on the mound for the Texas Rangers and he has a 4.15 ERA through two starts. Altuve’s career numbers against the right-hander are well above average. In 13 plate appearances he has a .462 batting average with two home runs and two RBIs, while boasting a 1.563 OPS. This Astros lineup is loaded with Alex Bregman, Jose Abreu, Yordan Alvarez, and Kyle Tucker. Altuve should get good pitches to hit tonight and the trends say to take the over at plus money.
Corey Seager, Texas Rangers, OVER 0.5 home runs (+350)
We are going to stay with this AL West matchup for our home run prop for Friday and take Corey Seager. Even though his home run numbers are down to start the 2024 season, the Rangers shortstop has been hitting the ball well with a .311 batting average through 45 at bats. He has one homer, five RBIs, and a .792 OPS. J.P. France will get the start for the Houston Astros and this is a solid matchup for Seager to go deep. France enters Friday night with a 4.76 ERA through two starts and is allowing 1.5 runners on base per inning. Seager has three hits in five career at bats against France for a .600 average, while two out of his three hits against him are home runs. Take Seager to go yard tonight against the Astros.
Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers, OVER 1.5 total bases (-110)
We are also going to attack Ohtani’s total bases as the Dodgers take on their NL West rival San Diego Padres on Friday night. Ohtani is off to a great start in LA hitting .333 with three home runs, eight RBIs, and a 1.012 OPS through 63 at bats. It is picking your poison for opposing pitchers as this lineup is lethal with Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and company. Michael King will get the start for the Padres and he has also had a solid start to the year. He heads into Friday night with a 2-0 record and a 3.14 ERA in three starts. In six plate appearances against King in his career, Ohtani has two hits and both are home runs. Look for Shohei to continue his success tonight against King and the Padres.
Jackson Holliday, Baltimore Orioles, OVER 0.5 total bases (-130)
Baltimore Orioles fans should be excited with the success the organization has had with its young talent. They just called up their No. 1 prospect in Jackson Holliday and we are going to bet that he gets his first career hit on Friday night. It’s been a sluggish start out of the gate for the 20-year-old, with zero hits in eight at bats. Make no mistake about it though, Holliday has the skill set to be a five-tool player at the major league level. Right-hander Freddy Peralta will be on the bump for the Milwaukee Brewers and he has a 3.09 ERA through two starts in 2024. With a packed Friday night crowd, I am betting Holliday gets his first hit of his career.
