Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 3/13/2024
The Trade Deadline has passed, and teams have less than 20 games remaining on the schedule. Vegas, Dallas, Colorado, Winnipeg, and Carolina all improved, as the Hurricanes look as scary on paper as the Panthers do, while the Jets, Avalanche, and Stars are in for an entertaining finish in the Central Division. There is big news out of Vancouver as Thatcher Demko is set to miss two to four weeks with a knee injury, which opens things up for Vegas and Edmonton to catch the Canucks over the next 10 games or so. Other news around the league includes the real life ‘Shoresy,’ Matt Rempe getting a four-game suspension for a brutal elbow, the Predators Dante Fabbro is set to miss a couple of weeks and newcomer Vladimi Tarasenko collided with Aaron Ekblad, who is now on the IR for two weeks. There is not a lot of time left to keep cashing in with these teams that have been moneymakers all season long, so let’s so who is dominating and who’s not.

ATS
Hot
Montreal Canadiens 8-2
The Canadiens have won just three games since February 15, but are one of the hottest teams in the league in terms of covering the spread. They stood their ground against the likes of Florida, Tampa Bay, and Nashville, as they took all three opponents to overtime on the road and ended up beating Nashville. Montreal has used three goalies over the last 10 games, and Jake Allen (now with the Devils) is 2-0 ATS, while Cayden Primeau is 2-1, and Sam Montembeault is 4-1. Montreal is now 21-11 ATS on the road, which is the third best mark in the league. However, they lead the league in covers, covering in 42 of their 65 games this season.
Nashville Predators 8-2
Aside from the Panthers, the Predators have been an absolute wagon since the All-Star break. Since February 17, Nashville is 10-2 ATS thanks to the offense becoming an absolute wagon. Over their last 12 games, they have averaged 4.08 GF/G, which is a huge improvement compared to their 3.17 season average. Like Montreal, Nashville has been incredibly consistent at covering on the road, as they rank fourth in the NHL with a 20-12 road record ATS. Overall, they are tied with the Canucks in third place in the league covering 38 of their 66 games.
Cold
Vancouver Canucks 2-8
They were having trouble with covering before the Demko injury, so this trend may continue in his absence. The Canucks did hit a cold stretch from February 17-29 as they went just 1-5-1, picking up three points in seven games with ugly losses to Minnesota, Seattle, and Los Angeles. In terms of covering, it took them a while to get going as they did not cover in nine straight from the 17th to March 5th. They covered their last two, going off against Vegas and Winnipeg, winning both and scoring eight goals and allowing just one to Vegas. Though they have been one of the leagues best ATS, Demko’s injury is worrisome as Casey DeSmith is 0-5 ATS in his last five starts.
New Jersey Devils 2-8
Though a team’s performance ATS has little to do with their overall success, this is just a testament to the disappointing season the Devils have had this season. After being one of the best teams in the league a year ago, this campaign has been stained with poor netminding. The team’s only two covers came against San Jose and St. Louis. And with three straight coming up on the road, there doesn’t appear to be too many covers on the horizon. Overall, the Devils are 21-44 ATS on the season, which is the worst in the NHL. It is also worth noting that this playoff hopeful now ranks sixth in the Metro Division and is six points out of the last wild card.
Moneyline
Hot
Florida Panthers 8-2
Switching gears to wins and losses, there is no hotter team than the Florida Panthers. The Panthers have only three losses since January 20, with all three losses coming to future playoff teams. Sergei Bobrovsky has been a huge presence for Florida this season and has not allowed more than two goals over his last 13 starts. The Panthers 2.35 GA/G leads the NHL, while they rank eighth in GF/G, third in PP%, and seventh in PK%. Over their last 10 games, they have a +14-goal differential and have allowed only 19 goals. It doesn’t look like anyone can beat the Panthers.
Nashville Predators 8-2
Thanks to Nashville’s dominating stretch, they quickly flipped from sellers to buyers at the deadline and now sit comfortably in the wild card spots. The top teams in the Western Conference made significant improvements at the deadline, and the Predators may not appear competitive on paper. However, the fact of the matter is that they are way ahead of schedule, and Nashville fans should be excited with the quick turnaround of the new Barry Trotz regime.
Cold
San Jose Sharks 1-9
It is official, the San Jose Sharks are officially eliminated from the playoffs. They have just two wins since the end of January and dealt away a lot of their role players at the deadline. Over the last 10 games, they have allowed 46 goals while managing to score just 25. The Sharks rank 32nd in the NHL in GA/G and 31st in GF/G. Things are ugly in San Jose.
Vegas Golden Knights 3-7
The Golden Knights did hit a cold spell but are 2-0 since the deadline and the skid should be over. There may not have been a bigger winner at the deadline than Vegas, and the offensive showing over the last two games is an indicator of just how dangerous this team is. Adin Hill will need to improve if the team wants to make it back to the Stanley Cup, but the Front Office did enough to make it possible again this season.
