Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 2/22/2024
As the trade deadline nears, streaks become all the more impactful as management decides what direction they want to go. Teams around the NHL are falling out of the playoff race, while others are making serious runs at not only seeing more games, but better positioning themselves in the seeding. Vancouver remains the only team with a significant lead in their division to this point, as the three other division races are seemingly going to go down to the last week of the regular season. With that, let’s see who the hottest and coldest teams are and who is making money.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
San Jose Sharks 8-2
Yes, you read that correctly… Didn’t think we would put this team in the money-making category, did you? The Sharks have only gone 5-4-1 straight up during this 10-game stretch, but the goaltending has been better, and San Jose has been able to stay in just about everyone of these games. The goaltending allowed just 2.5 GA/G over the stretch, and the Sharks pulled over major wins against the Rangers and Kings. Overall, the Sharks are 26-29 ATS. And before the hot streak, they were covering just one of every three games -- they made the list this week.
Detroit Red Wings 7-3
The Red Wings have done well since the start of the new year as they try and keep themselves in prime position for a postseason berth. In the three games they failed to cover, two of them were on the road and the other was an overtime loss. Alex Lyon has done well for this team in the net, allowing right around 3.00 GA/G since the new year, giving his team’s sixth ranked offense plenty of time to get things done on the other end. Overall, the Red Wings are 33-22 ATS this season, which is the fourth best in the NHL.
Montreal Canadiens 7-3
The Canadiens are back on the list as one of the hottest teams ATS, covering in seven of their last 10 games. Though this club is in disarray, they have consistently got the job done ATS this season. Straight-up they are just 3-6-1 over this stretch, but they have covered in four of those losses. The offense has really struggled, averaging right at 3.00 GF/G, while the goalie trio has allowed 3.6 GA/G during the last 10. It is worth noting that when Sam Montembeault was between the pipes, Montreal was 4-1 ATS. On the season, Montreal is 35-21 ATS, which ranks third in the league, one cover behind the league leaders.
Cold
Boston Bruins 3-7
The Bruins are the first of three titans to be on this list. Five of their last 10 games have gone to overtime or beyond, and the team lost five of their seven home games in this period. The team looked incredible in their three covers, as they shut out Vancouver, knocked off Edmonton on the road, and smoked the Flyers on the road. However, they failed to cover against the likes of Seattle, Calgary, and even got shutout by the Capitals. Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark have combined to allow more than three goals a game over the last 10 compared to their 2.68 season GA/G average. Overall, Boston is 28-29 ATS.
Vancouver Canucks 3-7
Now this might be the biggest surprise of all as we see our second powerhouse has gone cold. They have lost their last three games, and the once covers leader is now sitting in second in the ATS season standings. Thatcher Demko and Casey DeSmith have combined to allow 36 goals over the last 10, while the offense is about half a goal per game colder than they have been on the season. Overall, the Canucks are still making money and have covered 36 of their 58 games.
Honorable Mentions: Winnipeg Jets 3-7, Arizona Coyotes 3-7 (more on them later)
Moneyline
Hot
Florida Panthers 9-1
The Panthers have picked the perfect time to get going, as Boston has struggled and now Florida is just one point behind the leader in the Eastern Conference. Dating back to December 23rd, the Panthers have gone 19-3-2, making them the hottest team on ice. They are currently riding a six-game win streak with a +3.67-goal differential over the streak, while maintaining a nice +3.00 goal differential across the 10-game stretch. The Panthers netminders have been the backbone of the club, allowing just 17 goals since January 22nd. At 78 points, the Panthers rank third in the league standings.
New York Rangers 8-2
The Rangers haven’t lost since January 26th as the team’s streak has now hit eight games after an impressive win over the Stars on Tuesday night. Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick have formed a wall in front of the goal, allowing just 2.5 GA/G over the last 10, while the offense has averaged 3.8 GF/G. Not a bad split if you want to win. The Rangers are set to go on a three-game road trip, and they are just 3-6 over their last nine road games, so the streak may come to an end. Nonetheless, the Rangers are leading the Metro with 77 points and are one of the league’s most complete teams.
Toronto Maple Leafs 8-2
Thanks to this hot stretch, the Maple Leafs have begun to separate from the Lightning for the final guaranteed spot in the Atlantic. They have won their last five games and have gone 5-1 at home during the stretch, despite performing better on the road this season. Over the last five games, the offense, led by NHL leading goal scorer Auston Matthews, has tallied 27 goals while netminder Ilya Samsonov continues his resurgence and has allowed just nine goals in his last four starts.
Cold
Arizona Coyotes 0-10
Yikes. The Coyotes appeared to be a wagon in the beginning months of the season, but they have slipped up since the start of the calendar year. Since we turned the calendar over, Arizona has managed just 10 points and only one point over the last 11 games. They have been bad on both ends and have an average goal differential of -2.6 during their current losing streak with offense scoring more than three goals, just once.
Chicago Blackhawks 1-9
Arizona has been nonexistent for the last six weeks, but they still have a 17-point lead over the Blackhawks. Similar to Arizona, the club has tallied just nine points since the start of 2024 thanks in large part to a terrible offense. The team has been shut out four times since January 18th and hasn’t scored more than three goals in over a month. Chicago fans are getting excited about 2027 though…
