Hot and Cold NBA Betting Teams ATS and Over Under 12/31/2024
The NBA season ticks into 2025, and some teams have been able to finish off the year strong, while others have consistently fallen short. Not only has the calendar flipped into 2025, but the midway point of the NBA season is suddenly right around the corner. Here are the hottest and coldest teams against the spread over the last two weeks, with the highest and lowest scorers, too.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
The Hot:
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the hottest team in the NBA this season, and have shown no signs of slowing down. Not only are they on top of the NBA standings with a 28-4 record, but they also have a 23-9 against the spread record. In the last 10 games, they have gone 7-3 against the spread and 9-1 straight up. The oddsmakers are still hesitant to give the Cavaliers the same respect as the Celtics and Thunder, and have already paid the price. Donovan Mitchell has led the way offensively with 23.6 PPG, but it has been the Cavaliers defense that has allowed them to pile up the wins. Until they start getting double digit spreads against the majority of the NBA, the Cavaliers will keep getting covers all season long.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers made a blockbuster trade to acquire Dennis Schroder, and have already turned things around with a two-game win streak. They have gone 6-4 straight up and 7-3 against the spread in their last ten games. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are both still capable of playing basketball at the highest level and have led this team on both ends of the court. The Los Angeles Lakers will always be title challengers with James and Davis healthy, and the oddsmakers haven’t been giving them the inflated spreads we have seen in years past. In the next ten games, the Lakers have very winnable contests against the Hornets, Trail Blazers, Spurs (twice), and Nets. Be cautious if these spreads start pushing double digits, as the Lakers haven’t been blowing teams out this season.
The Cold:
Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns can use injuries as an excuse for their poor run of form, but it goes much deeper than that. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal have been unable to gel, and multiple on-court altercations should have the front office very worried. Phoenix has gone just 3-7 straight up and 2-7-1 against the spread in the last 10 games. Their inability to score outside of the superstars has been their downfall. You would think the Suns would start getting some free buckets once in a while, but the public sees Kevin Durant on the court, and disregards the lines and odds. If the oddsmakers start treating the Suns like the 15-16 team they are, they could turn around their against the spread record but that appears to be unlikely.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets are already looking at the draft for next season having lost 8 consecutive games, and 16 of their last 17 matchups. They haven’t even been close in many of them, and have gone just 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games. LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller have been on and off the court with injuries, which has disrupted the Hornets early-season hot streak. Charlotte will be getting lots of points consistently, so you will need to treat them on a game-by-game basis.
High Scorers:
Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz have a dreadful defense and have been soaring over their totals as a result. They have gone over the closing line in 9 of their last 10 games. The oddsmakers are hesitant to keep raising their totals considering their struggles on the offensive end, but as long as they keep letting in points their games will keep going over the middling totals posted. They have allowed 114 or more points in 8 of their last 10 games, with four of those games surpassing 130 points allowed. Lauri Markkanen is being actively shopped as Utah looks to cash in on its few remaining assets before going for a multi-year tank. Utah will keep playing lackluster defense, and as long as the totals stay in the 220’s, the overs will keep flowing for the Jazz.
Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons have an 8-1-1 record to the over in their last 10 games. They continue to hover in the middle of the pack in a crowded Eastern Conference. Cade Cunningham has been excellent on the offensive end, scoring and distributing with ease. Teams are eager to double team the rising star, which leaves capable shooters on the Pistons roster open. The Pistons have seen both teams score 110 or more points in 8 of their last 9 games, as they are happy to push the pace. It’s a little confusing to figure out why the oddsmakers are not bumping their totals, but there will be no complaints if they keep dangling these low lines. Detroit has only had a total of 228 or more points once in the last 11 games, and will keep cashing the overs as long as that trend continues.
Low Scorers:
Chicago Bulls
The Chicago Bulls once again find themselves in the NBA purgatory, as they are too good to tank but not good enough to truly compete. They have been inconsistent on the offensive end, and have gone over the total just three times in their last ten games. It’s not that the Bulls offense has suddenly dried up, but they are no longer putting up and allowing 130+ points per game. The closing total has been 230 or more points in eight of their last ten, with three of those games surpassing 240. It appears the oddsmakers have overcorrected after the Bulls torrid run of overs to start the year. If the Bulls start getting reasonable totals again, the overs will start cashing. At their current prices, it is probably best to just stay away from Bulls games as they can combine for 210 or 280 points on any given night.
Golden State Warriors
The Golden State Warriors have been unable to build on their hot start to the season. An injury to Steph Curry certainly played a role, but the Warriors lack of offense from the rest of the roster has been the real problem. They have gone over in three of their last 10 games, and have the same number of wins in that span. Curry’s return to the lineup will inject life into their lineup, but it won’t fix their other problems on offense. They have clamped down defensively to remain competitive, and will keep on cashing unders as the public’s perception keeps driving up their lines.
