Hot and Cold NBA Betting Teams ATS and Over Under 11/13/2024
The first three weeks of the 2024-25 NBA season are now behind us. There is still lots of time for teams to reverse their early season results, but all of a sudden the regular season is already 14% complete. Some teams have been able to exceed early season expectations, while others have consistently fallen short. Here are the hottest and coldest teams against the spread in the NBA.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
The Hot:
Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets came into the season with the lowest win total in the NBA of just 19.5 wins. They have vastly surpassed those rock bottom expectations and have gone 5-6 straight up and a remarkable 9-2 against the spread to start the season. Cam Thomas has been the leading scorer with 24.5 PPG, while Dennis Schroeder has been the primary facilitator with 6.2 assists. The Nets 5-6 record is far better than the 2.7 wins they were projected for at this stage, and the massive spreads they receive on a nightly basis have made them the best money makers in the league. They have been underdogs of 4+ points in 8/11 games this season, and have gone 7-1 against the spread and 3-5 straight up. They have been able to keep things close all season long, losing by more than five points just twice. As long as the Nets continue to receive these double digit spreads, they will keep on finding ways to get the cover.
Golden State Warriors
Is this 2017? The Golden State Warriors are surging up the NBA standings as 36 year old Steph Curry continues to prove he is still one of the best players in the NBA. Golden State has gone 9-2 straight up, and has covered the spread in all 9 of their victories. They’ve been favorites in just 6/11 games this season, yet have the second best record in the NBA. Curry and Buddy Hield have proven to be a lethal combination from behind the arc. The duo is arguably the two best three point shooters in the game, and now they are playing alongside one another. The three point shot is the most effective way to put points on the board, and the Warriors have been able to shoot their way to victory. They’ve scored the second most triples in the league at the fourth most efficient rate. That trend has the potential to continue, but the Warriors are due for some bad shooting nights. If Golden State starts getting massive spreads in their favor, it may be time to sell high on the Warriors.
The Cold:
New Orleans Pelicans
The start of the season couldn’t have gone worse for the Pelicans. New Orleans is just 3-8 straight up and 2-9 against the spread this season. They’ve already lost two games to the Trail Blazers and one to the Nets, but there is still hope for the Pelicans to turn things around. DeJounte Murray broke his hand in the first game of the season, CJ McCollum continues to struggle with injuries, and Zion Williamson has been on and off the court all season. The Pelicans have the roster to compete in a crowded Western Conference, they just need to all get on the court at the same time. A healthy Pelicans squad will start getting covers, but there is no reason to touch the current edition of the New Orleans Pelicans.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers entered the season with the 5th best odds to win the NBA championship. Joel Embiid finally got another co-star in Philadelphia, as Paul George signed in the offseason. However, Embiid suited up for the first time this season last night, and George missed the first five games of the season. To make matters worse, MIP Tyrese Maxey is now out for several weeks with a hamstring injury. As a result, the 76ers have gone a miserable 2-8 straight up and against the spread. The trio of Embiid, George, and Maxey is lethal, but time is quickly running out for the 76ers to start putting wins on the board. A 2-8 start may not seem disastrous, but the 76ers now have to go around 44-28 the rest of the way to avoid the play-in tournament. The 76ers will continue to get spreads in their favor now that Embiid is back on the court, but they haven’t proven they have the chemistry needed to thrive. Until they start stringing multiple wins together, don’t go near the overvalued 76ers.
High Scorers:
Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks play at a fast pace and they prioritize offense over defense with Trae Young leading the team. As a result, Atlanta has gone 10-2 in favor of the Over this season. Their 5-7 record is respectable and the Hawks did just pull off a massive upset against the Celtics in the NBA Cup opener. However, if Atlanta truly wants to contend their defense needs a serious overhaul. The Hawks have already lost 4 games where they scored 115 or more points, and have seen both teams score 110+ points in 10/12 games this season. Trae Young is one of the most talented offensive talents in the league, but his inability to play defense leaves Atlanta exposed. The oddsmakers have been keeping the Hawks in the 220’s, but their totals need to be in the 230’s or the Overs will keep on cashing.
Denver Nuggets
The 2023 NBA champions got off to a slow start, but the return of Jamal Murray from injury has reignited their offense. Denver has gone over the total in 8/10 games this season and has 7 wins to show for it. In fact, after starting off the year with a pair of Unders, the Nuggets have now gone Over in 8 consecutive games. Nikola Jokic is still the best player in the NBA, as his effortless offense allows the Nuggets to consistently fill up the hoop. The slow pace of play from the Nuggets has kept their totals under 230 points, and until they start reflecting this current Nuggets offense there is no reason this streak will not continue.
Low Scorers:
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets leading scorer LaMelo Ball is one of the most exciting players in the league, but they lack the scoring threats outside of ball to cash these totals. Just in their last two games the totals have been in the 210’s, yet the Hornets still stayed under. This season, Charlotte has gone over the total just twice, and has just a 4-7 record to show for it. They haven’t combined to score more than 216 points in six consecutive games, but it looks like the oddsmakers are starting to figure this team out. They received their two lowest totals by a significant margin recently, and this might be the perfect time to hop on the Over as the totals continue to drop.
Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NBA this season and have a 3-8 record through their first 11 games. Their offense has been terrible, and the Bucks have gone under the total in 8/11 games as a result. Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to play exceptional basketball, but he isn’t getting any offensive help from his teammates. Brook Lopez, Damian Lillard, and Khris Middleton are all too old to still produce, yet the oddsmakers keep treating this Bucks team like their 2021 championship side. Antetokounmpo will keep filling up the hoop, but the lack of offensive weapons will keep seeing the Bucks stay under their lofty totals.
