With a little holiday break in the action, let’s take a look at the money making teams from around the nation. The St. Bonaventure Bonnies have become cover darlings this season, while Oregon State and Auburn are other teams to watch ATS. The Grand Canyon Lopes are the team to fade when it comes to covering the spread, and the Oklahoma Sooners have great value to win the SEC and are a real threat to do so. With that and so much more, let’s see which teams are the real money makers.
Doc’s Sports offers college basketball picks for every game on our NCAA basketball predictions page.
ATS
Hot
St. Bonaventure Bonnies 11-1
The Bonnies have done really well to start the season as they are 12-1 overall and have covered 11 of their 12 games against Division 1 opponents. They have picked up key wins against Providence, Buffalo, and Northern Iowa in the nonconference portion of their schedule and are now in good position to make a run in the Atlantic 10. Thanks to the Bonnies stout defense, they have a +12.4 PPG differential, and they rank 11th in the nation in PPG allowed as they allow just 59.6 PPG and hold opponents to 38.7% shooting. Chance Moore has been their biggest offensive threat as he is averaging 15.8 PPG while also leading the team in 7.3 RPG. He is complimented by Lajae Jones who is the Bonnies biggest deep threat (47.2% 3P%) and Noel Brown who is averaging 12.2 PPG and is shooting 64.6% from the floor. The Bonnies currently have the third best odds to win the Atlantic 10 (+1100), but a couple of key wins against Dayton and VCU and the conference could be theirs. Regardless, the Bonnies are the best team ATS this season and are riding some momentum into conference play.
Season Leaders:
- St. Bonaventure 11-1
- Oregon State 10-1
- Houston Christian 9-2
- Farleigh Dickinson 9-2
- Auburn 9-2-1
Cold
Grand Canyon Lopes 1-10
After cementing themselves as one of the best mid-major conference squads, the Lopes are having a bit of a slow start to their season. They are 8-4 so far this season and have picked up some wins against Western Kentucky, Stanford, and St. Louis but they have a sill loss to UC Davis and have also lost to Arizona State, Georgia, and Louisiana Tech. Tyon Grant-Foster has had a big down year for Grand Canyon as he is shooting just 14% from deep and is averaging just 12.3 PPG which is down from his 20.1 PPG mark from last season. The Lopes are the worst team in the nation at covering the spread, picking up just one cover through their first 11 games against Division 1 opponents and they need to get going if they want to find their way back into the Big Dance.
Teams to Fade:
- Grand Canyon 1-10
- Vermont 2-11
- Minnesota 1-9-2
- Bryant 2-10
- St. Mary’s 2-10
Game Total
Over
South Dakota Coyotes 11-1
If you like high scoring games, you should tune into the South Dakota Coyotes games. Their lowest score total, through their first 15 games, is 77 points and they did that twice, losing one of them. The Coyotes have either scored or allowed 90 or more points in 11 of their 15 games, and their highest point total on the season (against a Division 1 opponent) is 94 points scored against Idaho State, a game they won 94-80. The average combined score in Coyotes Division 1 games has been 171 points. South Dakota ranks 14th in the nation in scoring as they are averaging 86.6 PPG, and they are doing this on a mere 46.4% FG%. As for their defense, they rank 340th in allowed PPG giving up 80 PPG and allowing opponents to shoot over 35% from deep. The Coyotes will continue to play in some high scoring contests if their defense doesn’t improve, but if you like offense, this is the team for you.
Season Leaders:
- South Dakota 11-1
- North Florida 10-1
- Indiana State 9-1
- Manhattan 9-1
- Gardner Webb 11-2
Under
Kansas Jayhawks 1-10
The Kansas Jayhawks lead the country as they have seen the south side of the game total, 10 times this season through their first 11 games. The Jayhawks have been playing some great defense this season and have allowed just 66 PPG so far this season while holding the opposition to just 38.6% shooting and 30.3% from beyond the arc. In addition to their elite defense, the Jayhawks lack of an offensive star has been a great recipe for some low scoring games. Hunter Dickinson, Zeke Mayo, and AJ Storr are all capable of being offensive juggernauts, but the Jayhawks pride themselves on ball movement so the three are sharing the load. Dickinson leads the team with 15.5 PPG while Mayo and Dajuan Harris Jr. are the only other Jayhawks averaging double digit PPG. The Jayhawks will need their defense to continue to play at a high level in order to succeed in the Big 12.
Season Leaders:
- Kansas 1-10
- Austin Peay 1-10
- Cincinnati 2-9
- Xavier 3-10
- Duke 3-9
Surprise Start
Oklahoma Sooners 12-0 – SEC
Of all the great storylines to follow this season, the Oklahoma Sooners deserve more of the spotlight. They have started the season going 12-0 and now find themselves ranked 12th in the AP Poll. They have picked up two ranked wins against Arizona and Michigan while also picking up solid victories against Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Oklahoma State. Jeremiah Fears leads the Sooners with 18 PPG, 4.7 APG, and 2.2 SPG. Behind Fears is Jalon Moore and Duke Miles who are both weapons beyond the arc and are both averaging over 12 PPG. The Sooners may not be as loaded as Tennessee or Auburn, but these guys are a real threat in the SEC. The Sooners have one more nonconference tune up before heading into SEC play for the first time. They open up their SEC schedule on the road against No. 5 Alabama and then host No. 13 Texas A&M, so we will see if the Sooners can keep chugging along.
