First NFL head coach fired Dennis Allen New Orleans Saints

At the time of this writing, we are yet to see one snap taken in the 2024 NFL Preseason, yet there are heads on the chopping block, pun intended.

Several head coaches in the NFL could have been fired in the offseason but were spared. The New Orleans Saints' Dennis Allen and Robert Saleh of the New York Jets are two of those names.

Saleh was saved because the Jets organization knew he had a capable quarterback for about 5 minutes in 2023. Let's hope Aaron Rodgers can be the difference-maker this team needs in 2024.

The Dallas Cowboys' Mike McCarthy is another name that is being mentioned. I just asked everyone at the barbershop what they thought a few minutes ago, and McCarthy was the popular prediction to be the first NFL head coach to be fired in 2024. 

My barber did note, however, that Jerry Jones is old school in how he does business and that if he did make a move not to re-sign his current head coach, the decision wouldn't be made until after the season.

Some more names we have for you today are the New York Giants' Brian Daboll, former Giant and current Raider head coach Antonio Pierce, and believe it or not, Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles has similar odds as Pierce and Daboll.

Let’s run through some of these names, evaluate how much time we think they could have left, and match that data with the betting odds we have for the first NFL head coach to be fired in 2024.

Odds for First NFL Head Coach Fired

Dennis Allen: +500

After an 8-28 stint with the then Oakland Raiders to start his head coaching career, Allen somehow landed another skipper spot, surprisingly, this time with the New Orleans Saints.

The NFC South has been a weak division in his first two seasons with the team, and he has yet to break .500. That is atrocious, but what do you expect? The guy has a trash record, and he has underachieved to this point in New Orleans.

I don’t mind the 5-1 betting odds for him to be the first NFL head coach fired in 2024. Let’s see what else is out there.

Robert Saleh: +550

I like the guy. He managed to hold things together last year after Rodgers went down early with the Achilles.

Mike McCarthy: +600

Dem Boyz are too talented to start the season 2-6, and that's probably what it will take for McCarthy to get canned before the offseason.

Matt Eberflus: +700

I am passing on Matt Eberflus. The Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams, and he is expected to play this year. The ownership and GM will give the young man some continuity under the headset, at least for another year.

Todd Bowles: +800

Todd Bowles would get the boot if it weren’t for Baker Mayfield playing his heart out for him and the Tampa Bay.

Brian Daboll: +900

Daboll and the G-Men are only projected to win 6.5 games this season. Their schedule is light for the first month or so. I think they can win a couple of those games. And if Daboll does go, it will be late in the season after the team is out of playoff contention.

Antonio Pierce: +1000

It's no secret that Antonio Pierce wasn't part of the plan, but Josh McDaniels had to go in the middle of the season, and he was the guy who led the charge. The team played incredibly hard for him.

That's great and all, but I am hearing louder and louder rumors that Jon Gruden could make his way back to a head coaching position in the league, and the Raiders are, of course, a popular pick.

Nick Sirianni: +1000

Sirianni hasn't had his club playing at the level they should. Last year, the team got off to a good start with wins, but the close games started to catch up with them. And by the end of the season, they had lost 4 of their final 5 games.

Then they lost in the playoffs to the Tampa Bay Bucs by a score of 32-9!

Predictions

Dennis Allen: +500

Antonio Pierce: +1000

Neither of these two are qualified for the job. Pierce has the potential return of Gruden working against him, while Allen is probably the worst head coach in the league right now.
