Rivers Portsmouth Casino Opens in Virginia Featuring BetRivers Sportsbook
Rivers Portsmouth will offer casino gambling and sports betting as the first permanent venue in Virginia. The BetRivers Sportsbook is part of the casino at has 1,448 slot machines, 57 table games and a poker room with 24 tables.
The venue is just south of I-264 between Missy Elliott and Victory Boulevard. River Portsmouth is a $340 million development adjacent to Tidewater Community College’s Portsmouth campus. BetRivers Sportsbook is the product of Rush Street Gaming that also owns the casino. The Chicago-based gaming developer operates casinos in Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania.

Portsmouth is One of Five Virginia Cities for Casino Development
Part of the plan to help economically distressed cites in Virginia, the state’s casino development committee identify five cities through 2020 legislation. Portsmouth is the first Virginia city to permanently open its doors to the public.
River Portsmouth invited guests on the first day of the dress rehearsal on Thursday Jan.19. The casino and sportsbook is opening its doors to the public on Monday, Jan. 23. Revenues during the two testing days are donated to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, USO Hampton Roads and Central Virginia and Wesley Community Service Center.
Representatives from the Virginia Lottery Board and the state’s gaming regulator have been on hand during the two tests. Virginia’s gaming law requires that slots, gaming tables and sports wager undergo independent third-party testing before the casino and sportsbook opens.
Rivers Portsmouth Casino and BetRivers Sportsbook will be opens on time on Jan. 23 giving the delay from Jan. 15. The sportsbook features a 750-foot video screen that can show 30 different games. BetRivers is equipped with 27 self-service kiosks that can handle sports wagers. A TopGolf Swing Suite with three bays is built to accommodates eight players at each location.
Rivers Portsmouth Builds Its Permanent Gaming Facility
Rivers Portsmouth opted to pass on the temporary facility and pressed on to build its permanent casino and sportsbook. The primary competition will come across the Elizabeth River in Norfolk. However, opening first provides the benefit of building market share as the only game in town.
Roy Corby is the general manager of River Casino Portsmouth. He commented:
“Being the first in the state…it’s surreal. Working with the state of Virginia…to get things accomplished has been a fantastic voyage.”
Along with the casino and sportsbook, Rivers Portsmouth is featuring five restaurants, a meeting space and an events center with a music venue.
Portsmouth city officials selected Rush Street Gaming as their casino development partner. Rivers Portsmouth and BetRivers Sportsbook is Rush Streets’ first developing project in Virginia.
