MLB Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Teams for Betting 5/15/2023
Both short-term and long-term trends are important in baseball wagering, as they help identify valuable betting opportunities. Short-term trends show recent performance and can help identify momentum shifts, while long-term trends provide a comprehensive view of a team's strengths and weaknesses. The relative importance of each depends on the situation and the bettor's goals. Considering both types of trends, along with other relevant information, can increase the chances of making profitable bets. You can count on Docsports.com to give you all the trends you will need to wage a successful wagering campaign.

Hot Moneyline-Season
Tampa Bay Rays: 30-11 +14.85 Units 20.80% ROI
It's not surprising that the team with the best record has the best moneyline record, per unit. While this hot start is rather unexpected, the Rays are getting it done on offense by leading the league in batting average (.276), runs scored (252), and home runs (80). Not just a flash offensively, their pitching leads the league in ERA (3.17), opposing team's batting average allowed (.212), runs allowed (133), and second in earned runs allowed (128) and home runs allowed (30). A true team effort.
Hot Moneyline-Last 10 Games
Los Angeles Dodgers: 8-2 +5.90 Units 46.27% ROI
The sportsbooks are having a mini-nightmare right now because when public favorites like the Dodgers go on a winning streak, they tend to get hammered. A 46.275 return on investment is going to make the squares decent money. This run has been impressive because of the quality of the teams that they have been beating. They took four out of five against San Diego, swept Philadelphia, took two out of three against Milwaukee, and the run started with sweeping St. Louis.
Cold Moneyline-Season
Oakland Athletics: 9-32 -17.85 Units -43.38% ROI
Oakland's been playing "Minus Money Ball" this season, with the major's worst win-loss record, having lost the most units and having the lowest ROI of any squad. They've earned this dubious distinction by posting a team ERA of 7.20, almost a full two runs higher than the Chicago White Sox's 5.54 ERA, the second worst. Their offense isn't nearly as offensive, merely ranking in the bottom five of any vital offensive category.
Cold Moneyline-Last 10 Games
Pittsburgh Pirates: 1-9 -9.05 Units -77.02% ROI
In my first article, the Pirates were one of the surprise Hot teams, with the second most money earned and a decent winning percentage. The luster of those stats faded quickly and they are now mired in a dreadful slump. Unlike the woeful pitching A's, the Pirate's pitching is actually in the middle of the pack. It's been their hitting that has been abysmal, with a team batting average of .175. They are the only team with an OPS under .600 (.534) for that span. It shouldn't take much to get out of this slump, just a little more offensive production. Until then, look to either fade or aggressively bet against the Pirates.
Hot Run Line-Season
Baltimore Orioles: 25-14 10.80 Units 22.69% ROI
If I said two American League East squads had the best records in baseball, that might be a little surprising but not shocking. If I told you those two teams were Tampa Bay and Baltimore, the surprise would rapidly be replaced with disbelief. But the Orioles (26-13) would be in first place in any other division. In the AL East, they're three games out. However, the teams that they have beaten had a combined record of 196-207, 11 games under .500, so it's not like they're beating the elite. If wagering on them use caution.
Hot Run Line-Last 10 games
Washington Nationals: 8-2 5.55 Units 42.05% ROI
The Nationals'modest little run over the last 10 games can be attributed to decent starting pitching and an offense that is fourth in batting average over the last 10 contests. While their straight-up record is only 6-4 during this span, because they've been an underdog for every game of the year and the run line is always 1.5, they lost 2 one-run games for their impressive 8-2 stretch. Interestingly enough, their bullpen is dead last with a 7.23 ERA during this run.
Top Total Team-Season
Boston Red Sox: 27-13-1 O/U +11.80 Over Units 27.06% Over ROI
While the Red Sox sport a modestly-successful 22-19 record, it isn't due to a lack of run production on their part. They have only been shut out once this season while not recording any shutouts of their own. They average scoring 5.51 runs per game, third in the MLB. Their pitching is averaging allowing 5.15 runs per contest, the fifth-worst in baseball. Put those two stats together and you get an over percentage of 67.5%. That's money in the bank.
Top Total Team-Last 10 games
San Diego Padres: 0-10 O/U +10.15 Under Units 95.75% Under ROI
The San Diego Padres are in a midst of a rough stretch, having lost seven of their last ten games. However, their pitching has been superb, with the second-lowest ERA in the majors over that time period at 2.40. Both the starters and relievers have sub 2.70 ERA. As one can expect, their offense has been rather anemic, batting only .203 and scoring 24 runs in that 10-game span. Though they are only averaging 2.4 runs per contest in the last ten games, their only shutout was their most recent game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
