DraftKings was one of the first mobile betting apps to start taking wagers at 10 a.m. (ET) on Friday. The Boston-based operator went live on Jan. 31 at three of the state’s retail sportsbooks in the Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, Plainridge Park in Plainville and the MGM Springfield.
The goal was to capture the two biggest sports betting events, the NFL’s Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 12 and the NCAAB’s March Madness in line for Selection Sunday, March 12.
Along with DraftKings online sportsbook, Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel and WynnBET were taking sports bets online through computers and mobile betting apps. Bally Bet, Betr, Betway and Fanatics Sportsbook are going state-wide online in the coming months.
All 10 online sportsbook operators have cleared the regulatory guidelines, opening up the Massachusetts market for online sports betting. The online betting sites will have opportunities to market themselves with a wealth of sports betting promos and bonuses.
The Benefits of Massachusetts Online Sports Betting
Retail sportsbooks in Massachusetts have been brisk with the Super Bowl. However, the general sports fan in the state has missed out if they are not in the area of a land-based casino. Online sports betting in the state will quickly fill the void.
Sports betting analysts have agreed that Massachusetts mobile sports betting could result in a $5.3 billion handle in the first year of legal wagering in the state. Thanks to a 15% tax rate, the collection of online sportsbooks in Massachusetts could take in more than $200 million in revenue in March alone.
According to a survey at BetMassachusetts.com, 41% of legal residents of the state are “likely” or “very likely” to place a sports bet at one of the retail or online sportsbook in Massachusetts. They determined that 37% of legal residents will bet on sports “at least” once weekly.
Jobs will be created by online sports betting in the state and in-state sportsbooks will see their share of revenue increase with mobile wagers. Above all, sports betting fans around Massachusetts can bet their games online with their favorite sportsbook.
The Boston Bruins Have Partnered With FanDuel
FanDuel also got in the game in Massachusetts on Friday, March 10 with a partnership with the Boston Bruins. The National Hockey League Eastern Conference favorites (+225) announced a deal with FanDuel to name the sportsbook an Official Sports Betting Partner.
Mike Raffensperger is FanDuel Group’s Chief Commercial Officer. In a recent statement, he commented:
“Massachusetts is home to some of the most passionate fan bases across the country and we’re excited to enhance their viewing experience with the launch of the FanDuel Sportsbook app. Bruins fans are the true embodiment of that passion and we look forward to supporting the team this season and beyond.”
Its timing was perfect and FanDuel will be able to use the Boston Bruins’ trademarks and the team’s signage both on the dasher boards and inside the TD Garden. The sportsbook will also use the NHL’s new digitally enhanced dasher boards.
FanDuel and the Bruins will collaborate on digital and social media content including the homepage of the two companies.
