Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 12/7/2023
Last week, we analyzed the teams on either side of the game total, now it is time to see who is covering and who is not. So far, the Flyers and Jets have had the most success at covering the puck-line this season, while no team has more wins than the Rangers. We have also had a shift in our basement dwellers as the Blackhawks are now the worst team in the league as the Sharks now hold a two-point advantage over Chicago. After a rather quiet Wednesday night, it is time to take a look at where we are making our money around the league.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
Detroit Red Wings 8-2
The Red Wings have made a lot of noise off the ice in the last week or two after signing Patrick Kane. While Kane is a good signing, the boys on the ice deserve some credit. They have won six of their last seven contests and have covered in eight of their last 10. The offense has been much improved over the last seven games, as they are averaging 4.28 GF/G. The only loss in their last seven was an ATS cover, but a tough one-goal loss to the Rangers in the Garden. Alex DeBrincat has proven to be an excellent offseason add, as he and captain Dylan Larkin are tied for the team lead with 24 points. However, the Red Wings are deep, as 11 of their guys have double-digit point totals already. Oh, and they just added Kane to that already deep roster.
Nashville Predators 8-2
Nashville has been on a tear of late as they have won eight of their last 10 contests while also covering eight games as well over that stretch. Overall, Nashville is just four points out of a guaranteed spot in the Central. Filip Forsberg is near the top of the league’s points list, as the star LWer has 29 points so far this season, leading the team, while also leading in goals (13) and assists (16). Taking away the Coach Hynes revenge game for Minnesota, Juuse Saros has improved, as the netminder has allowed just 2.17 GA/G over his last six outings. Overall, Nashville is just 11-13 ATS, but this team is currently the hottest team on the ice.
Philadelphia Flyers 8-2
The Flyers have been able to capitalize on the underwhelming season the Devils and Penguins are having and have somehow found themselves in the top three of the Metro Division, one point ahead of the Isles. Philly has won eight of their last 12 and have covered in eight of their last 10 games. The obvious strength of this team is their goaltending. Carter Hart has been great all year. However, over this current hot stretch, Samuel Ersson has been lights out and has allowed only five goals in his last three starts, which included a shutout road win against the Isles. The Flyers continue to be one of the best teams ATS in the NHL as they are 18-7 so far this season, which is the best mark in the league. Maybe the Flyers won’t be sellers?
Cold
Toronto Maple Leafs 2-8
A win is a win, and the Leafs have won six of their last 10. However, when it comes to making money with covers, the Maple Leafs have been a huge letdown. Toronto has covered the puck-line just two times in their last 10 games, and eight of their last 10 have been one-goal games, showing you that Toronto has failed to pull away as they are almost always favorites. This should come as no surprise, though, as Toronto is tied for last in terms of success ATS, as they have covered just five of their 22 games. They did lose to John Klingberg for the year and have a hole on the blue line, and Ilya Samsonov has seemingly been usurped by rookie goaltender Joseph Woll, after Samsonov’s abysmal start. They may be dominant, but they don’t cover.
New Jersey Devils 2-8
So, who is tied with the Leafs for dead last ATS this season? The New Jersey Devils. The key difference is that the Devils aren’t having any success at all. The biggest issue for New Jersey is their goaltending has continued to be awful and the unit now ranks 31st in the NHL as they allow 3.78 GA/G. Jack Hughes has been incredible for this team and has accumulated 33 points in just 18 games this season, but the offense isn’t the issue. The Devils did lose blueliner Dougie Hamilton to a torn pectoral muscle, which is a big loss. However, the Devils are 4-1 in their last five, so maybe they will get back into the playoff race. However, there is statistically not a better money-making move than to fade the Devils ATS.
Moneyline
Hot
Nashville Predators 8-2
The Preds have gotten themselves right back into the playoff hunt thanks to this hot stretch. Despite all the offseason noise and belittling expectations from fans and media, Barry Trotz and Coach Bruno have their guys in the thick of things.
Los Angeles Kings 7-3, Winnipeg Jets 7-3, New York Rangers 7-3, Edmonton Oilers 7-3, Detroit Red Wings 7-3
With a crowded list, let’s focus on a few key notes for these teams.
The Kings are 10-0 on the road this season, and their +32-goal differential is the highest mark in the NHL. Los Angeles has won seven of their last eight games overall, and now is a good time ride the road success, as five of their next six games are road contests. Winnipeg has been hot lately and has now joined the Stars and Avs atop the Central Division in what might be one of the most entertaining division races of the year. The Rangers have been better than advertised and are running away with the Metro. As mentioned earlier, the Red Wings are deep and just got deeper by adding Patrick Kane to the list. And oh boy, the Edmonton Oilers have finally put together a nice stretch. The Oilers have a lot of ground to make up yet, but they are playing much better and will work their way back into the playoff picture.
Cold
Anaheim Ducks 1-9
The Ducks had everyone thinking they may be halfway decent, for about a week, and now their last 10 has shown that this team has a long way to go to be somewhat relevant again. Not only have they lost nine of their last 10, but they have also managed to score four goals just twice and one of those performances was a shootout. The offense is incredibly cold. They have a -22-goal differential across this skid. The majority of their last 10 contests have been against playoff caliber teams. However, it goes to show that these Ducks were not going to be hanging around for long. Their goaltending is a huge issue, especially when the offense goes cold, as they have allowed 3.48 GA/G which ranks 28th in the league. One more note, the Sharks are just four points behind the Ducks…
Chicago Blackhawks 2-8
It looks like all the off-ice noise has gotten to this team. The Chicago Blackhawks are now the worst team in the NHL with just 15 points on the year. Connor Bedard is seemingly their only offensive piece as he is the only member of the team to reach 20 points, while no one else has 15. Additionally, their goaltending ranks 30th in the league as they allow 3.67 GA/G and have a lowly .892 SV%. Bedard has all but locked up the Calder Trophy, but this kid needs a lot of help if he ever wants to know what the playoffs are like.
