Best NFL Teaser Bets Week 9: Basic Strategy Teasers
We got back on the winning track last week with our basic strategy teaser predictions. Sitting at 5-3 for the 2023-24 NFL season, I am ready for another win.
You may be asking yourself what is a teaser and why is it a good thing.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
What is a Teaser?
A teaser is a type of parlay bet where the bettor can manipulate the odds, and in return, the sportsbooks will lower the payout. The amount of points you can give your team depends on the type of teaser.
There are 6-point teasers available from most sportsbooks, and others even have teaser odds up to 10 points or more. Like a parlay, you can tease more than just two teams. While there is nothing wrong with an educated lottery ticket of just a few dollars here and there, we can't get wrapped up in the big numbers.
That plays directly into the welcoming hands of the sportsbooks.
You need a basic strategy.
What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?
One rule of the basic strategy teaser is that they are always in the NFL with lower scores and much closer margins of victory on average. Next, we make sure it is only two teams. It will be tempting to add more, but don't.
These need to be 6-point teasers, and we want to tease those 6 points through the key numbers of 3 and 7. This holds true if we are teasing underdogs up or favorites down. Just those two key numbers, by themselves, account for nearly one-fourth of all margins of victory in the NFL.
We look for underdogs with betting odds of (+1.5) to (+2.5) and tease them up to (+7.5) to (+8.5).
To tease a betting favorite using the basic strategy, take them from odds of (-8.5) to (-7.5) down under a field goal at (-2.5) to (-1.5).
Below, we have listed all of the potential candidates for our Week 9 NFL basic strategy teaser.
Let’s quickly analyze those games, and make a prediction.
Week 9 Potential Teaser Games
Miami Dolphins (+2.5) vs Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5)
This one will be played in Germany, with a kickoff around 9:30 Eastern Time in the US. That’s pretty early for you West Coasters.
I can't hide my jealousy, though. The earlier, the better for me.
I digress. We would be looking to tease the dog up in this matchup. So, KC is out of the question. While I have heard some pros are on the Dolphins here, I have heard the same for KC.
There are just a ton of variables with the game being in Germany. Also, we want to look for games with a lower point total, because our 6 points matter more. This game is expected to be the highest-scoring of the week.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+2.5) at Houston Texans (-2.5)
Tampa, losers of three in a row, are our option here if we want to tease them up through the key numbers of 3 and 7 up to 8.5-point underdogs. This does look like a game that will play out closely.
It's indoors, which will help the Bucs. They have looked terrible lately. Let's continue to explore our options.
Arizona Cardinals (+8) at Cleveland Browns (-8)
Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback Josh Dobbs has been ruled out of this game. Maybe Kyler Murray goes, and the Cardinals have this spirited performance, but for what?
The word is they are done with the Murray era. So, I don't see why they would play him this week against Myles Garrett and one of the most athletic, explosive defenses in the NFL.
Either way, the Cardinals tank in the second halves of games. They will likely have a third-string rookie starting for them.
Tease the Browns down to (-2) by fading Clayton Tune? That’s music to my ears.
Chicago Bears (+7.5) at New Orleans Saints (-7.5)
We would be teasing the Saints down. They are going up against a backup quarterback as well. Operation “Fade the Backups” could get us to another basic strategy teaser victory.
Indianapolis Colts (-2.5) at Carolina Panthers (+2.5)
We missed our chance on the Panthers last week. They might not win again for a while. And with all the points the Colts have been putting up, I'll pass.
New York Giants (+2.5) at Las Vegas Raiders (-2.5)
The word is that Daniel Jones is cleared for play this week. Hey, I am a huge fan of Tyrod Taylor. I used to see him around Blacksburg in college. He is one of the best at what he does, but good defenses, at this point, shut him down completely.
He threw for 8 yards on Sunday against the Jets. His backup, another rookie, threw for -1 yard. That’s 7 for the game. The Giants’ defense is playing out of their minds, Saquon Barkley is back healthy, and they’re getting their starter back under center.
Buffalo Bills (+2.5) at Cincinnati Bengals (-2.5)
You don’t want me to pick the Bills here. I am 0-for-I-lost-count when betting on Buffalo this year.
They are the most inconsistent team in the NFL.
Week 9 Basic Strategy Teaser Prediction
I have picked on the Cardinals all year. I'm not going to stop until they beat me. As for the Giants, I think they can run the ball on the Raiders, control the time of possession, and wear them down over 60 minutes.
New York Giants (+8.5) and Cleveland Browns (-2): -120
