Best NFL Teaser Bets Week 5: Basic Strategy Teasers
After a blazing 3-0 start on our teaser bets, we fell short in Week 4 when the Miami Dolphins couldn’t stop the Buffalo Bills in the red zone.
The other underdog, the Seattle Seahawks, that we teased, won outright 24-3, though. That felt good, but we were way off on Miami.
Before we dive into this week's betting play, I want to explain what a teaser is and, more specifically, define the basic strategy teaser.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
What is a Teaser?
A teaser is a type of parlay bet where the bettor can change the odds in their favor. That, as you would imagine, will lower the value of the payout. A parlay of two legs, each at (-110), pays out at (+264).
A two-leg NFL teaser will pay out at (-120). It used to be (-110) until the sportsbooks started to get burned. So, you know this type of bet CAN be a good strategy throughout the season.
What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?
A basic strategy teaser is when we tease an underdog of (+1.5) to (+2.5) up to betting odds of (+7.5) to (+8.5). That is a comfy cushion for both of your legs.
If you want to tease a betting favorite, you tease them from (-8.5) to (-7.5) down to (-2.5) to (-1.5).
Why these numbers? Well, they pass through the key numbers of both 3 and 7. A key number is a term we use for the exact point differential. More NFL games end with an exact difference of 3 points than any other differential. The second most likely margin of victory/loss is 7 points.
You want to tease your teams through these key numbers.
Another rule of the basic strategy teaser is that it is only two legs. We have all lost a parlay bet in our lives. So, you understand why we keep it to two legs.
Let’s check the betting board for Week 5 in the NFL and make a prediction for our basic strategy teaser.
Potential Week 5 Teaser Games
New Orleans Saints (+1.5) @ New England Patriots (-1.5)
I won’t waste too much of your time here. I think the Patriots are going to win this game by a touchdown. If we can’t get two underdogs to tease up, maybe we will come back to the Pats.
Houston Texans (+1.5) @ Atlanta Falcons (-1.5)
Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud is on pace to break about every first-year QB passing record known to man. He already has over 1,200 yards passing with six touchdowns and zero interceptions.
He has played against some good defenses, too! Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Jacksonville are all tough. They lost their first two games, and he was sacked 11 times. Over the last two weeks, though, he has not been sacked, and the Texans put up a combined 67 points in two wins.
We are getting points with this guy against Desmond Ridder and the Atlanta Falcons? Am I missing something here? Even if I am, I will still make the Houston Texans the first leg of our Week 4 NFL basic strategy teaser.
Green Bay Packers (-2) @ Las Vegas Raiders (+2)
Neither of these teams is reliable or predictable at this point of the regular season.
New York Jets (+1.5) @ Denver Broncos (-1.5)
The New York Jets, specifically the scapegoat, quarterback Zach Wilson, have taken absolute drubbing from the media. It may calm this week or at least shift to Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
I thought Wilson played poorly in Week 3 just like everyone else did, but it was against an elite defense. Against another solid D this past week, Wilson played well against the Chiefs until he fumbled a snap on a game-tying/winning drive.
Denver is the true test, though. If he can't carve up this secondary, maybe we start to look for someone else for the starting job. Everyone has lit up the Broncos, particularly through the air.
To lose Aaron Rodgers in possession 1 of Week 1, the Jets haven't been that bad. They're better than the Giants. I think they are a better team than the Broncos, as well.
New York has had a very difficult schedule through their first four games playing the Pats, Chiefs, Cowboys, and Bills. I think they put a whooping on Sean Payton’s Broncos.
NFL Week 4 Basic Strategy Teaser Prediction
I am betting both of these teams to win outright. So, giving them each six more points for a (-120) payout seems like a smart play to me.
Pick: New York Jets (+7.5) and the Houston Texans (+7.5)
