Week 1 Picks Against the Spread:
Buffalo Bills (-2.5) vs Los Angeles Rams
In a potential Super Bowl preview, the Bills are set to face off with the defending-champion Rams. Expect Buffalo to come out hungry and seek revenge for their frustrating playoff exit last season. The red carpet has been laid for Josh Allen and the rest of the Bills to put out an impressive season, and expect this to begin with a comfortable win over the Rams amid their Super Bowl hangover. The spread of 2.5 is too small of a spread to be nervous about. Count on the Bills to win by a touchdown or more.
New Orleans Saints (-5.5) vs Atlanta Falcons
The New Orleans Saints are set to begin a new era without Sean Payton this season. New Head Coach Dennis Allen has a great chance to start off on the right foot as the Atlanta Falcons are likely set to end up as one of the NFL’s bottom-feeding teams this season. Expect the Saints to produce a comfortable double-digit win in Week 1.
San Francisco 49ers (-7) vs Chicago Bears
The 49ers are sure to have eyes on them this season after handing the keys to the starting quarterback job to Trey Lance. The former third overall pick showed intriguing flashes in his limited snaps as a rookie, and all signs point to him being ready for the full-time starting role. San Francisco is better than the Bears on both sides of the ball and should be expected to put forth a double-digit victory to start the season.
Cincinnati Bengals (-6.5) vs Pittsburgh Steelers
The Cincinnati Bengals exceeded all expectations by making it to the Super Bowl last season. While many believe they are destined to take some sort of step back this season, they made some notable additions to the offensive line and kept the core intact. Whether they see the same success over the season is to be determined, but expect them to produce a strong Week 1 performance against the Steelers. Take the Bengals to win by at least a touchdown.
Philadelphia Eagles (-4) vs Detroit Lions
The Philadelphia Eagles had arguably the best offseason across the entire NFL. The franchise made improvements on all its notable holes and clearly has its intentions set on contending this season. Jalen Hurts has a great deal of pressure on him, but the weapons that are now around him should make his job easy. Expect a strong performance in Week 1 as a show of their improvements and for the Eagles to cruise to a blowout victory against the Lions on opening Sunday.
New England Patriots (+3) vs Miami Dolphins
In the first underdog pick of the week, expect the Patriots to surpass this spread and win outright against the Dolphins in Week 1. There have been glowing reports of Mac Jones coming out of training camp as he enters his second season in the Patriots system. While this should also be considered a make-or-break year for Tua Tagovailoa, expect Bill Belicheck to have a scheme ready for the Alabama product and the best route to secure a victory.
Baltimore Ravens (-7) vs New York Jets
The Jets are trending in the right direction, but an injury to Zach Wilson and some overall roster concerns do not have them quite ready to be a threat this season. Expect Lamar Jackson to play like he has something to prove this season amid the contract uncertainty. Jackson does not appear the type to mope and will be set to put his best foot forward by leading the Ravens to a statement double-digit victory in Week 1.
Jacksonville Jaguars (+3) vs Washington Commanders
The Jaguars could end up being a surprise team this season after settling most of the uncertainty from last year. With Doug Pederson coming in to settle the head coaching trainwreck that occurred last season, along with another year of development from Trevor Lawrence, look for Jacksonville to look much improved. Expect them to win outright in week one and take down the Commanders.
Carolina Panthers (-2.5) vs Cleveland Browns
The week one matchup against the Browns is certainly one Baker Mayfield will have circled on his calendar. With Deshaun Watson suspended, and Mayfield looking for revenge, expect the Panthers to cruise to a comfortable Week 1 victory. This is a matchup that is expected to stay close, but Carolina should be counted on to win by at least field goal or more.
Indianapolis Colts (-8) vs Houston Texans
As the Colts are set to roll out their eighth starting quarterback in the past five seasons, expect Matt Ryan to finally provide the stability they are looking for. The Colts have a high-quality defense and one of the best running backs in the NFL in Jonathan Taylor. Matt Ryan will not need to do more than game manage and will be facing off with a Texans team that could find themselves in the running for a top pick this season. Count on the Colts to cruise to a double-digit week one victory.
Tennessee Titans (-5.5) vs New York Giants
There are fair reasons for concern surrounding both these teams as Ryan Tannehill is coming off a disastrous playoff performance, with Malik Willis looking over his shoulder, and Daniel Jones is a serial underperformer. The Giants have some renewed optimism this season with a new head coach at the helm. While this game will likely stay close, expect Derrick Henry’s running ability to be too much against a defense that greatly struggled on the ground last season. Take the Titans to win by a touchdown or more.
Minnesota Vikings (+2) vs Green Bay Packers
In an NFC North rivalry to start the season, the Vikings should be expected to open some eyes. The franchise took away impact pass-rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Packers this offseason as well as Chandon Sullivan in the secondary. While you can never count out Aaron Rodgers, expect his familiarity with the new wide receiver group to take some time to develop. Take the Vikings to cover and win outright in Week 1.
Kansas City Chiefs (-4.5) vs Arizona Cardinals
The Chiefs and Cardinals have a heavyweight Week 1 matchup, with both sides ready to make a statement. While the Chiefs will be without Tyreek Hill this season, expect the offense to remain dynamic with Patrick Mahomes at the helm and Andy Reid pulling the strings. No matter how much film study Kyler Murray has done, the track record of the Chiefs is enough to count on them winning by at least a touchdown to open the season.
Los Angeles Chargers (-3.5) vs Las Vegas Raiders
This West Coast divisional matchup is set to be one of the more anticipated Week 1 games. The Chargers made improvements to the defense this offseason by adding Khalil Mack and JC Jackson. Justin Herbert has shown some impressive flashes and is still improving. While both teams should be expected to be playoff contenders, look for the Chargers to get the better of the Raiders in Week 1 and cover the spread.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-1.5) vs Dallas Cowboys
No amount of missed preseason time should have anyone concerned regarding whether Tom Brady will be ready or not. They may not have been able to repeat their Super Bowl success last season, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the Buccaneers moving forward. Expect a statement win as they prove they still must be considered legitimate threats this season.
Denver Broncos (-6.5) vs Seattle Seahawks
With Russell Wilson getting his chance to return to Seattle right away, all eyes will be on this Monday night matchup. The two teams are heading in opposite directions, and Wilson will look to elevate the Broncos into the contending category. Expect him to show out in the opening week and prove why he was worthy of the trade it took to land him. The Broncos can be counted on to win by at least a touchdown and make a statement in Week 1.
