An Early Look at BetMGM’s State Farm Stadium Retail Sportsbook in Arizona
When the state of Arizona first started the process of legalizing sports betting, it decided to take a unique approach to the process. One of the most innovative provisions in the pending legislation was retail sportsbooks at Arizona’s professional sports stadiums, arenas and other sporting venues.

With a NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL team located in the state, this made all the sense in the world. However, Arizona did not stop there. This state’s gaming laws for retail sports betting included a golf course and auto racing track with featured annual events.
The two events that immediately come to mind are the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale and the two NASCAR Cup Series events each year at Phoenix Raceway. The latter NASCAR event at that track in November will crown the season’s Cup Series racing champion.
Each of the major US sportsbook operators jumped at the chance to form a strategic partnership with each Arizona sports venue as a great way to gain brand exposure with sports bettors in the state. As the third-biggest US operator in terms of market share, BetMGM formed its partnership with State Farm Stadium in Glendale as the home field of the Arizona Cardinals.
BetMGM was one of 18 sportsbook operators that received approval to offer its mobile sportsbook app across the entire state. With that much competition right out of the gate, it is easy to see why MGM Resorts International formed a partnership with Arizona’s highest profile sports franchise.
Seven of those operators first went live with mobile sports betting on Sept. 9 in 2021. This planned launch was designed to coincide with the start of the new NFL regular season. BetMGM’s big plans on tap ahead of the 2022 NFL season opener is a state-of-the-art retail sportsbook at State Farm Stadium.
Before online sports betting became widespread across the US, one of the only ways to place a sports bet was through a retail sportsbook at a land-based Nevada casino. That is why Las Vegas became a regular destination for die-hard sports fans. This remains the case for major betting events such as the NFL’s Super Bowl in February and the NCAA Tournament for men’s college basketball each March.
The BetMGM Sportsbook at State Farm Stadium is looking to become a year-round attraction for sports fans outside of the Cardinals’ home-game schedule.
This retail book will be two stories tall and cover 16,800 square feet of gaming space. Total capacity will be set at 500 and the venue will be located on the north side of The Great Lawn section of the stadium.
Some of this book’s biggest features include a 265-square-foot video wall along with 38 stand-alone TV screens. There will be a fully-staffed betting window and more than 25 self-serve sports betting kiosks located throughout the facility.
As part of the stadium itself, the BetMGM Sportsbook will be one of the many featured attractions during Cardinals’ games as well as any other live sporting events that take place throughout the year.
In states offering both retail and online sports betting, more than 90% of all wagers are placed through mobile sportsbook apps. However, nothing can replace the thrill and excitement of betting on the games at a retail location.
The idea of betting on live games where they are actually being played raises things to a whole new level of excitement.
BetMGM also partnered with Gila River Casinos in Arizona. The plan includes four retail sportsbooks at Gila River Casinos in and around the metro Phoenix area. Come next September, the BetMGM Sportsbook at State Farm Stadium is sure to be the crowned jewel in this collection of land-based betting venues.
